MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKET
The local cattle trade is very quiet
and dull at present. A few shippers
have thrown up their space and are
selling their cattle on spot, preferring
to lose one dollar here rather than two
dollars on the other side. In conse•
quence the market was flooded during
the week and prices eased off a trifle.—
The cattle men are complaining of the
rates which the steamship companies
are charging, claiming that they are
exorbitant and will not bear comparison
with the rates charged for dead freight.
The cattle men themselves are much to
blame, however, and until they make
arrangement for rates before putting
their cattle on the steamers the trade
will remain in an unhealthy state.—
The majority now put their cattle on
board, and when the steamer is away
down the liver, go to the steamship
office to arrange for the freight. They
admit this is a bad system, but claim
the steamship companies should regu-
late the rates in accordance with the
state of the markets. Up to Thursday
last 23 boats had gone forward, and one
shipper calculated the amount of freight
paid for oattle at about $200,000. From
this it would appear that the only people
that are making money this season are
the steamship men. The secret of the
success of last season was that the
shippers bought the space as they want•
ed it, but the success of last season ap-
parently made them reckless. Private
cables received to day are certainly not
encouraging to shippers who claim to
have dropped from 62 to .£3 per head
on recent shipments. At the east end
abattoir trade was very dull. The off-
erings were: 1.50 cattle, 350 calves, 250
sheep, and 150 lambs. While the offer-
ings were very small, and trade was in
consequence very dull. One shipper
bought 50 stockers at 4 to 41c, and this
made up the principal business, their
being no other shippers buying and
butchers buying sparingly. The cattle
offered were not extra choice, the best
selling at 5c. Good sheep suitable for
shipping were in good demand at prices
ranging from $(; to $7, the 120 offering
being disposed of at these prices. We
quote: Choice cattle at 41 to 51c; medium
4 to 41c: culls, 31 to 33c; calves, $4 to 36
sheep, $5 to 37; lambs, $:3 to $5.
Despite the recent downward flurry
in the British market the Breeders'
Gazette of Chicago says:—"It has been
a long time since so hopeful a feeling
prevailed among cattle growers. The
continued firmness of the market for
fat beeves and the oft -repeated predic-
tion of well informed parties in the
trade to the effect that the 36 notch
will ere long be reached is gradually re•
storing confidence where only weakness
previously prevailed." The Gazette
further points out that in the face of
the largest supplies ever known the
prices move uninterruptedly forward,
and also believes that they are destined
to show a further and very substantial
gain within the next few weeks—a con•
elusion fully warranted by the surround-
ings. During the week ending May 14
in the Chicago market cattle quotations
ranged up to $5.60.
