OUIM ETTE, LONDESBORO JOHN CUNINGHAME, - - CLINTON DEAR SIR—At the time the Scott Act1 up Busilless. was in forcewe often heard the remark from those in the liquor business and others, that the Crooks Act was the best act for the country, and wouldbe obeyed. How is it obeyed at the pre- sent time? Do the liquor dealers think that all their fellow men are ignorant of what ie apparently being done every day in violating the law. How is it * x 2= that so many idlers are allowed to 'X * spend their time around some barrooms day after day. I would like to ask is it true that liquor can got at some of J.C.DETLOR& Co the hotel back doors on Sabbath days, or at otherr hhours contrary rary to law. How is it that liquor can be apparently got by mere youths, as such are seen drunk on the streets. I am told that some hotels have a small room in a quiet cor- ner for men to pass away their time in card playing. I ask the Commissioners to weigh well the past conduct of any parties,ap lying for license this year.— Let there be a searching into the mat. ter, and if too many are applying for licenses that cannot make a living de- cently, so called, let us have less.houses licensed, and compel them to obey the law. I ask the Commissioners, as pa- rents, to put the question to themselves, how would they li)ce it if their children were sent home drunk to make their homes and friends unhappy. Yours, • OBSERVER. Seldom has a larger company gather- ed at a sale ring than Was the case at a sale of shire horses at Worsley Hall, near Manchester, England, on January 15th, when some fine animals were'sold by auction. The property of the Earl of Ellecmere, whose fame as a breeder of these shire horses is well known.
