HE CAItRIEIi TI{E' BASKET
A lady who-•lige0' iii"lheialaburba
was down in the city one eveniug
buying marketing.' She had a large
basketful 'stili was'goiog to -;the cor-
ner of Ninth street for the purpose
of taking .the,, motor ',line •for her
home. She baa a petliLe aid r'lt;ther
youthful figure; but is about' 50
years of age and has been a widow
for a decade. A dapper young man
who was also a "masher," saw her
and approaching asked her if he
might not help her home with her
basket. Now this ividow. hates
dapper young men; and especially
mashers;• therefore she told the
young man he [night see her home
and carry her basket, He thought
he had made au immense hit, and
he else thought in the dim light the
widow was a beautiful young lady.
The widow trauaferred the basket
to the dapper young man's arm, and
relinquishing her idea of riding
home in the"horeecars in'order that
she might have a large bushel bate
ketful of fun she started with her
escort for a walk of about fifteen
life•siae, full-length squares. The
basket got frightfully heavy in about'
five blocks ; in ten it was a huge
white elephant, and by the time the
two reached the lady's residence it
was ono of the pyramids of Egypt,
and the dapper young man was
badly blown and altogether broken
up. The widow rang the bell at
the door and a grown young lady
came asking :—"Why, rna, .what
did you ring tho bell fur The
door was not locked r The dapper
young man almost fainted, and
when the widow said :—"Won't
you come in, sill My husband
would be glad to see you," he was
paralysed. But he recovered quick•
ly and went away from there, and
the widow has been having convul-
•sive tits of laughter ever since, in
-which she is ably seconded by her
daughter and the remainde r of her
family. The masher has been tak-
ing iron and quinine ever since to
build up his strength.

A SAVAGE LOVERS REVENGE
Geo. Tanks, a Choctaw Indian,
eighteen years of age, escaped from.
the house of refuge about two
mouths ago, and was captured last
evening at First and Green by Offi-
cers Flow and Gunther. Banks is
a United States prisoner, and was
sent to the house of • refuge' two
veers' ago to serve a five years' term
'for killing an' Indian girl in the
In :i, Territory.. Au interestiug
story is convected with the affair.
Two years ago Banks was living
amoug hie people in the, Indian
Territory a wild, dare -devil Indian
boy. In the same tribe was a beau-
tiful Tndia] girl about fourteen
year.: of age. Her bright eyes and
gracrfel form won the young Choc-
taw':; heart, and ' he asked her to
become' the light of • his wig -warn.
But she turned a deaf ear to his
appeals of love, and preferred single
bliss to the monotonous life-of-car-
rying
ife'of car-
rying water and cutting firewood'
for a lazy Master. Then it was
that the evil spirit entered the heart'
of • .Laniis, •and ho made an awful
oath.
He determined that if' the, beauti•
fol Indian girl would not come to
his wigwam he would not permit
her to go to any other. With mur-
der in his heart he mounted his
pony and went iu search of. his vic-
tim. He fouud her 'sitting alone
in front of her f'ather's tett looking
across the broad !hairiest No one
war; near, and he saw an opportun-
ity to get revenge, so in true Indian
style he lassoed the beautiful mai-
den. around the neck and dragged
her across the prairie at the pommel
of his saddle uutil her soul bad
gone to join the Great Spirit.
For this gentle diversion he was
arrested by the suited States au-
thorities,, and, being too young to
send to the penitentiary, was son-
tenced to a five years' term in some
reformatory inetitutign; and :the
house of refuge of Tsluis`vill'a direr
was :elected as the place.
