Of all modern grouts, I'aplat
u
Martin Van Buren Bates, oI' Kau-
tucky, and his wuud,•iful hint are
the • must iut,.restiug. Captain
Bates' weight has been given as 4J6
pounds, au.1 his 1 eight at 7 fret
111 merles. Ifo wears a *26
collar and a Nu. 15 hoot. A .viper
tvho stet i,int a few yearn aria tl,
private life describes hint as dross
ing neatly in black, and 1v,: u leg .,
massive gold chain atul watch lac-
seuted to lint by Qiineu \ lori•1,
brilliant diamond in hisehit1 bosom,
and a fashionable collar au,l SIM rt..
His face was ruddy and healthy
looking, and his smile pleasant and
winning.
When in Eugland, in 1871, Cap
tain Bates mot the fat::ous giantess
Miss Anna Swan, to whom he was
soon after married. Mrs. Btteq was
exactly the sante height as her hus-
band, and altogether they made a
very handsome pair. Her weight
was at that time a little over 400
pounds, and her forms very charm-
ingly proportioned. It may interest
lady readers to kuow that sixty-five
yards of goods wore required to
snake this lady's wedding gown. A
reporter who visited the giant
couple at their residence in Selville,
Ohio, several yogis ago, gives a
vivid picture of the domicile of
these mammoth people : "It is a
difficult matter to convey an adequ-
ate idea of the proportions of such
a dwelling as the cue ocenpiod by
the Ohio giants. A door that is
6 feet 6 inches high is a large-sized
opening in the side of a house -that
• is, a dwelling -house, not a cathedral.
But the doors in the domicile
of the Bates giants are ten feet
high, and the knobs aro nearly as
high as the reporter's head. The
house was built by Captain Bates
in 1876, andis elegantly'fucnished.
The coital' upon which the big
couple sleep %VAS made especially
for them, and is a curiosity to iuok
at, It is extensive enough to give
the great big people room to stretch
in, and it looks as big as an ordin-
ary sized floor ►1. is really ten foot
long, wide i:: t "on, and about
twice' as 1 , t:oi rou bud.'
The magnil eeut dressing case is
also a huge affair, with a glass upon
it nearly as big as the side of a
house. In the sitting•roonl is a
piano .of ordinary size itself, but it
is mounted ou.blocks two feet high,
so that the' instrument is away up
in the air, out of the reach 01 com-
mon folks. 'There are two rocking-
e'hairs in this ronin that are so big
that the reporter had, to -climb into
ono of theme the same as an infant
would clamber into a high chair..
It is very expensive for the giants
to live, as they have to pay such
e"nrbitant prices. for everything
they wear. Fur instance, it costs
the Captain $30 fot •. pair of bouts.
It is a most astor:ishing sight to
corse across the two giants out for a
drive. City folks who have seen
the ponderous wagons with wheels
reaching to the second story of a
house, used t0 haul stones weighing
tons and tons, can form an idea of
the tsbiele " .n'l. It is pulled by
six stout. Norman horses, and it is
enough to make a man think he has
got'em sure to Suddenly meet such
a spectacle on the road out in the
country.' Passing wagons have to
let the rails down and drive into
the adjoining fields until the giants
go by."
'.I'EMPERANCE TALK.
A spirit+'d debate on the prohibi
tion question took place in the
Presbyterian General Assembly in
session in New York the other day.
A marked incident was the opposi-
tion given to prohibition by Rev.
Dr. Howard Crosby, of.New York.
Dr Crosby, it is said, has done
more for tumpnrauce in New York
than any two or three temperance
aneietiea, and he has stood great
abuse for his h''tve fight ; but he
does net -believe prohibition would
succeed in Now York, and so ho
opposed it, so far, at least, as New
York is concerned. Dr. Crosby
spoke thus -"1 have fought saloons
for thirteen years in New York
city. When the fight began there
were 1,000,000 people here and 10,-
500 saloons. Now there are 1,500,-
00O people in New York and 6,-
811 saloons. [Applause.] I feel
that I know something about New
York city and the effects of liquor
legislatiou. Those are two 'great
principles adopted by Christian
men on this enbjest. Both would
destroy tho saloons. One principle
is prohibition, tl other high license.

Postmaster Rooney of Rondout
had a experience ono day recently.
A woman, whose husband had re-
ceived it 'warning letter' from al-

post office and authoritatively de-

received the woman in his private
office and the following occurred :
'Do you 800 this letter? Read
it 1'
The postmaster read it and said :
'I see it is from the White Caps.
They have warned your husband
that unless he leaves the state with-
in ten days, he will be flogged with-
in an inch of his life.'
'That's it, That's just what it says.
