LIES ANI) LIABS.
'!'hero are many Ii.Is iu this
world. The psalmist remarked :-
"1 said in my haste all moll aro
liars."
11 he could have deliber•
atcd un thin thiug during lar excit-
ing election contest he wigltt nut
have changed iia miud at leisure.
Master George Washington said he
could nut tell a lie. 1t' he could
not toll one thou, of eeurse his
merit. fur truthfulness was nut SO
great as that of one who. could toll
a lie and would nut. But it uuest
be remembered that when George
made his cherry tree remark about
his truthfulness he was a small boy,
and that was long before he engaged
in politics. \Vheu he was running
for office, and before he became
President, he never said anything
about not being able to toll lies.
He had promises to make and post -
offices to give out, and had to do
the best he could.
Lady Macduff, talking to her
little son during the troublesome
times in Scotland, when anon diad
"ere the flowers in their caps
withered," told him that a traitor is
a roan who lies and swears, and
that they shall be hanged, every
ono. "Who oust hang them 1"
asked the doy. "Why, the honest
mon," said the mother. "Then,"
said the boy, "the liars and swear-
ers are fools ; there are liars and
swearers eipough to boat the hone:at
men and hang thorn up." That is
how the population averaged in
those days. 'Things Have changed
since then. Perhaps there are more
liars now, There aro more. people.
Soule Iv is responsible for this.
Satan is o record as the father of
lies. Somebody way the lath
)t of
Satan. 13 is written that Satan
was once an angel and stood high
among h'is associates. It is terrible
to think he could have been an
angel in heaveu and' telling lies so
stoutly that he was called the father
of lies. lie must have done some-
thing, for the story goes that he
was cast out of heaven and sent
below for being a bad augcl. It
shows ho '• ,v even au atigol may
fall. 1:.1 ::I hist pass.*
The,,. numerous kiuds of
liars. A few 'of the little untruths
ono meets in society aro called white
lies, A polite person says she is

at home when the wrong person

selves to convict others for crimes.
They des)ive the lwtteet damnation
that can bo laid out for thew. A
man associated . with Falstaff said ;
"I do despise ,a• liar." Su du we
all. There are "infiniteaud endless
liars and hourly promise breakers,"
They are all despised.
There are brag;iug liars. They
have always something wuudorful
to say about themselves that really
never happened. They will tell
you what this lir that great noun
said to hint whoa he had said with
ing. They brag about their business
when they are doing nothing to
speak of. Some of them priut
newapaperq-in New York -and
lis tr,;niondously about their circu-
lation They are of the Baron
_lluucltanr.en order, and maks them-
selves believe they ate believed..
The oldest iubabitant liar is
among the most harmless of all old
bores. He will toll you all about
Jackson's war, and how the cotton
bales were placed for breastworks,
as they have never been placed
since, and how things looked when
the war's fell, and how he skated to
Algiers wheu the Mirsisssppi River
was frozen over ; how he talked
with Lafayette, and how he actually
took iu everything he had over read
about. The oldest inhabitant liar
is tau old to be deposed ; and
there is no backing down a wen
wl u tells you of what he has heard
and seen himself.
The campaign liar is superb, Ho
is so grand that his friends have to
nail him to keel, him down on
earth. He work fur both and any
sides at the same time, He stops at
nothing softer than a brick wall.
\Vheu the campaign is not too
clean he will uu.lcitake to ruin the
character of any candidate. He is
not thought much of.
The polite liar is delicious. IIo
always says you aro looking well --
that you do not went u day older
than you did ten years ago --that
he is delighted to, see you. Ile
does not born you, because he is
polite and knows when to stop,
and when to take himself off. Tho
polite liar is among Ibe most toler-
able of' all liars ; lint he is still a
Har. He mixes taffy with his false-
hood and makes it palelablo•

Farming in Obregon is thus decrib-
ed by C. E. Brown, of Oregon City,
iu a letter to the (.;oruwall Freeltol-
der:-Of all the lazy and good-for-
nothing men I ever saw are the Oro-
gon farmers, I know a man of good
standing, who has ,four • daughters
and he has to keep a Chinaman to
cook and wash for his worn•on folks.
Every third'farm is mortgaged here;
and the luckiest thing for them is
that the Canadian thistle has not
got here. I went to a farm house
where they plink tea cows, and
where they buy their butter. Mak-
ing butter was too hard walk for
them -they fed the milk to the
calves One can tell an Eastern
man here without having to ask any
questions. 1 am told that prior to
the commencing of the raining viti-
ate"' the farmers go to the uearest
store, buy a pound of tete, half a
pound of coffee, and a dollar's worth
of tobacco, and as long as the to-
bacco lasts they aro not again seen
in town.
