Ile then went on to argue at great length what no one disputes, that the conquest and treaty of Paris and all legislation permitted the ut- most frtttuiont of worship in Quebec. Coming to the act itself be claimed that if the Legislature thought there was a moral obligation to compen- sate the Jesuits, they had the power and right to put their opinion into effect. The claim alight he as weak as air, but strong with those whom the constitution appointed to decide., It was not for the Government to say whether the Legislature arrived at the right or wrong conclusion us between contending parties in Que- bec Province. The minority did not, he asserted, bluffer from this act. The revenues from the Jesuits' Estates were paid into the consolidated fund out of which the appropriations were Made fur ,higher education three times as great as the revenues from the estates. Ile reiterated his argu- ment that this act ,Was a fiscal met, ter and said that for fifteen years past the Quebec supply bill contained appropriations to the Jesuits. He ridiculed the idea that a grant of woniy'"to teachers and preachers was an endowment of the church any more than a money grant hy the Legislature to a hospital under the care of a rilligioue organization. He then detailed au imaginary conver, cation between himself and His Ex- cellency in which, replying to Hie Excellency's demand to know rnaeons for disallowance, he gave Mr. Mu- Cartht,'s argumeate • foul quarterly reviews and unknown authors. The exchange of these compliments he- tween two leading lights on the saute side of politics amused the house and particularly the Opposi• tion. At a number of the arguments of the Minister of Justice Mr. Mt.. Carthv laughed outright especially when Sir John 'Thontpaon assorted that a conquering country could not impose its laws on the conquered country anti that unless the laws of the inferior country were expressly repealed ,Ii.)ey ternaiued in force not., withstanding the statutes of the crown seizing the country. Again the Minister said•if'His Excellency had enquired for the -wrong doing of the Jesuits since they were -incorporated in 1852 at St. Mary's -college, Mon- treal, could he relate any acts of itn- nmoraity or sedition when none were charged. Ile concluded by charg- ing Mr. McCarthy with seeking to revit'e issues laid to sleep, two hum dred years ago. On resuming his seat, Sir John Thompson was loudly cheered from both sides of the House. MR. MCN RILL, of lrnCe, followed in support of Col. O'Brien's amends went. He predicated that Canada was a Protestant country and bound to resist the' aggressive movements of these spiritual warrior Jesuits. They should be thankful if they found an asylum in this couptry. He contended tine was not at MI a local question, but concerned On• tario as well, where various insidi, ous attacks on the rights of Piiotess tants were attributed to therinstiga- tion of the Jesuits. He protested against the Pope receiving public money in Canada, against the eon. solidation here of an unserupplons oidef, which through all Christen, dom has been a fomenter of discord and a stirrer up of strife, and whose members were prepared to pursue the same tactics which formerly ren- dered its suppression necessary.
