JOHN R. HOLMES,
WHERE GEN. GRANT LEARN.-
ED
EARN-ED STRATEGY.
Once, while talking with Gen.
Grant, I asked him how he got his
strategic knowledge. ' I got it ou
the farm when 1 Was a boy,' said
the General. 'I learned it when I
was driving oxen, fending calves
and breaking horses. One day,
when I was on the old farts in Ohio,
niy father -taught me a valuable les-
son in strategy.' ' glow" I asked.
Well, father took me into the
stable one day, where a row of cat-
tle stood in their uncleaned stalls.
Said he, ' Ulysses, tho stable win -
•
clow is pretty high for a boy, but
do you think you could take this
shovel and clean out the stable?'
'I don't know, father,' says I ; ' I
neve-have done it.' ' Well, niy
boy if you will do it this morning,
1'11 give you this bright silver dol-
lar,' said my father, patting ins on
the head, while ho -held the silver
dollar before my eyes. Good'
says I ; ` I'll try,' and then I went
to work, I tagged and pulled and
lifted and puffed, and finally it was
done, and father gave me the bright
silver dollar, saying ''That's right.
Ulysses; you did it splendidly, and
now I find you can do it so nicely,
AM._h{-WNN
I shall have you do it every morning
all winter.' "
SHAIIP TIIIIUST.
Some sten who pass for very re-
spectable citizens, and are really not
without good qualities have a habit
not only of finding fault with tivei,r
wives, but of doing it in terns such
as no gentleman would ever think
of applying to any Indy except his
own wife or possibly his own sis-
ter.
There is a story that such a man
came home from the shop ono night
e
and found his wife mach excited
over the outrageous behavior of a
tramp. Ho had begged for some-
thing to eat, and not liking what
the woman gave him, had abused
her in the roundest tends.
'.Johnny,.' said the man thorough-
ly indignant. ' when you heard that
cowardly rascal abusing yotir mother,
why didn't•you run at once to the
store and let me know 1 I would
have made short work of him. Didn't
you hear 1'
Yes, pa, I heard. I was out in
the barn and heard what he said
about the victuals ; but'—
' But What 1'
' Why, pa, I thought it was you
scolding mother. He used the very
same words you do when the dinner
doesn't suit you. I didn't think
anybody else would dare to talk to
mother in that way.
A• FALSE ALARM.
The Arizona Kicker says : When
the stage drove up the other even-
ing the report got abroad that one
of the passengers was a Chicago de
tective, and some forty or fifty of
our leading citizens broke for the
country on the cantor. Most of
them lay out all night, with the
thermometer standing at four do-
grees below. The following casual-
ties are reported :
Captain Johnson—Right foot
frozen so badly that atnputation is
talked of.
Judge Pelham—Both ears frost-
bitten and nose badly used up.
Prof. Sweeney --Broken log, caus-
ed by a fall while running. i'"•p '„
Major Adams—Ears, nose and
sevon toes frost-bitten, and his spine
badly wrenched.
Sgniro Davis—Several frost. -bites,
a sprained ankle, and the probablii
loss of a portion of his beautiful
ltonian nose.
