declared that the only solution of
the question of commercial union
was the union of the two countries.
He had further declared that the
Anierican people as a nation would
never stand idly by and see a great
power intik up to the south of
them and another to the north.
The lion, gent10:000 pari touched
upon the iron industry, atol he hail
waxed very indignant 11010040
success had not followed the mt:stss
ures that bail been adopted a year
or two ago to nourish it. The
develupement of an induttry of this
kiml was not of a day. Was there
ever a country ii: which the iron
industry had attained any great
proportions without a, protective
tariff? One great argument that
has been brought forward by
those favorable to unrestricted
reciprocity was the present state of
the coutitry. These lion, gentlemen
had employed by every means in
their powt.r that ambition could
suggest or ingenuity could deyise
to persuade the people of this 001M -
try t.o withdraw their confidence
from the Government, but no
methods were more to he deprecated
than those which they had persis-
tently employed toshow that Canada
was in a ruined and depressed
copdition and wan fast crumbling to
_to the ground. He quoted etatisties
to disprove the assertions of those
people who were continually decry-
ing their country, and showed that
since Confederation, there has been
an immense increase in the savings
'bank desposits. He also demon-
strated the benefits to all classes
of the cominunity, and the farmers
particularly, that had resulted from
the adoption of the National Policy.
But the people who had such a pitis
ful and tnournful tale to tell of their
country had no hope to hold out ex•
cept in a foreign rfatiOri whiclt bad
never been remarkable for its gener-
osity, hut which always remembered
its own interests. The Conservative
party twelve: years ago, when the de.
pression was real and undeniable,
did not appeal to a foreign country,
but to the enterprise and intelligence
of Canadians Any arrangements
by which commercial union coulirbe
consummated would not be a treaty
of commerce but a political surren-
der to a foriegn nation. It only
meant one, thing, and that was, for
all pritetical purposes Canada was
to become an integral part of the
United States. If Canadians were
only true to themselves and true to
their country he believed that they
might. wait with the firmest cons
fidence and the highest hopes what.
ever • fate the rolling years might
bring them.
