BOVILLE'S CENSUS AN ESTIMATE OF THE ATTENDANCE AT BAR ROOMS. Rev. Mr. Boville preached iu Hamilton, Ont. last Sunday. He gave soine information about the bibulous habits of the Hamilton - ions. Itbeing Christmas times they were probably more thirsty than usual. Rev. Mr. Boville preached from this text : And He cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallon, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and The hold of every foul 'spirit, and a cage of every unclean and • hateful bird.—Rev. xviii., 2. In the ancient Jewish wind, since the Babylonish captivity, said the preacher, Babylon was synony- mous with all that was seductive, vicious, dangerJus, aud it was this meaning that was presented in the mind of St. John when, iu the island of Pattnos, he wrote in a spirit.ef prophesy of the fall of. I3obylou. Mr. Boville spoke of the modern Babylon—the tempta- tions which environ young men who arrive as str•augors iu our modern cities. In Hamilton, he said, there aro but few places and influences, morally healthful, which Can Compete with, evil places aud. influences for the attention and attendance of young ;ten. if they want good books to read they must go to Dundas for them. The Pro testant churches are open only on Suudays, and on Wednesday even• Ings. It is true, there are the Young Men's Christian association routes—the only public place of wholesome character, besidos the churches, where young men are welcome. But there are at least 108 places of a dangerous characters —98 licensed taverns and ten saloons—all of them pleasantly fur- nished aud comfortably warmed, and many of them with billiard rooms attached ; and in every one of these young men are cordially welcomed. Young men don't usually go in there first through an innate lovo for liquor, but merely because they have nowhere else to go. These houses of enteitaiument. pay 'licenses, every year, $48,000. Over the counters of these places is paid every' year, in live and ton cent pieces, $500,000. 'Phis is the minimum estimate, and is exclusive of the wholesale liquor business and tho breweries. The greatest enetny of the workingman, the great impoverisher., the principal. source of the ten thousand social evils that surround us, is the liquor traffic. Hamilton, it is said by some, cannot afford to support a free library ; and yet the people of Hamilton spend at least $500,000 for alcoholic drink every year. De- pend upon it, there will bo many an alcoholic vote cast agaiust the free library by-law ; and therofdro every temperance vote in the city @hQuld be cast iu favor of the- by- law. Mr. Boville must have had some practical assistance iu getting some of the figures which he quoted last night. He said : " Between 2 and 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, in four taverns promiscuously selected, there were 172 nlen. Taking three figures as an average, them were. in the taverns and saloons of Hamilton in one hour yesterday afternoon 4,000 young men. Between 7:30 and 9 o'clock last night—when the driuking places were supposed to be closed—there were in five bar- rootue of IIamilton, promiscuously selected. 210 men. Where is the Crooke act 1 It is Possible that thelia visitors Merely went into the btu -rooms to wi; h the bar -keepers a merry Christmas; but whatever was their purpose, their presence there was a violation of the law. Ile• twee') 7 and 7:30 o'clock this very night, while you and the other Ululation cougregationa of II:uuil- toc•'were engaging in praise and prayer, 42 young men wore counted iu the bar -roosts of four taverns of the city. It' this cumber be taken as an average, there are now about one thousand young men breaking the law by drinking secretly iu the taverns of IIamilton." What is'tho beat way, asked Mr. Ilovillo, to treat this mighty evil The best way to treat 0 mad dug is to cut olf his tail close to the head, and the beat way to treat the liquor traffic is to secure absolute prohibi- tion. But we cannot get a prohibi• tory law immediately, and in the meantime 8JIIlething must be done. It would bo a grand thing if the Dominion government would du what the British government is now doing—establish in every city, town and village throughout the country a department of science and art. The young men are Itullgeling for something of this kind. This would bo flank move- ment on the liquor traffic. The provincial gavot un1ent call also (lo much fur temperance by compell- ing the 1180 in the public sehouls of test -bunks Ctl tcntperanca'. (lar City council shunl(1 fulhid 1111 cxisten0 of a billiard table in the same premises as a bar. There ought to be in connection with overy church and every temperance organization in Hamilton a public room—open every evening—with good reading matter in it, and perhaps a cafe in connection with it, whore the young men of the city would be cordially welcome. If the re were 108 places of this kind in the city, they would drain the attendance at the 108 drinking places at least 75 per cent. The Babylon of the liquor traffic is sure to fall, and its fall will herald the dawn of a glorious day for the human race. Q, MEANING OF "RUNNING AMOK." " Amok ! amok 1" resounds Dile morning through the streets of.. a Malay town in the Indian Archipol• age. Men, women and children flee in all directions, screaming with terror ; loud erica rend the, air, warning everybody to be on their guard; the gates of the large houses are shut and fastened. "Auluk ! amok !" shriek the people, as they tIaluple over each outer in their hurry to save their lives. The alarm spreads far and wide. The hand of ever Malay springs to the twisted baud of his sheath, to draw fo;'th the dagger that hangs by his Side the police cluteli their 'tveu- pous ; the - Europeans seize their guns : every eye, every nerve is strained for the coining petit. "Amok ! amok !"—a wild shriek, a groan, a cry of mercy, and there rushes on the maniac with the bloody -kris in his hand,. striking right and left, heedless of friend-' or foo, having stabbed au uld ratan to the heart, killed a fainting wotntn, and dispatched a child halt' dead with fright. Ile is pursued by a number of people all armed with spears, daggers. knives, guns and clubs, who grow as madly excited as tl • wild creature they chase. Bland- ishing his ruddy blade, the ghastly Malay, perhaps gashed with cuts and bleeding from stabs, dashes along in his fury, driving his kris into the back of a man running for his very life, leaping over his body, avoiding a thrust made by a pursue r, aud returning it with fatal effect. Shot after shot is fired at the flying maniac, who still runs on, strong and enduring, like a tierce wounded: tiger, marking his course with his own blood and that of fresh victims. Aud so he goes on and on till he falls froul.suule shot, or sinks froul .exhaustion, to be dispatched by the ready daggers of his chasers. Or, per- haps, cut off add hemmmd iu, the amok -runner, dripping With bfood, stands at bay iu some house or against. a wall, glaring with blood -shot eyes, and holding out his stained kris, defies any o110 to approach. Then tha police bring into use a huge short -pronged pitchfork, with which they aro provided in the Straits settlement, deftly thrusting at him till he is caught by the throat, pinned to the Wall, and hold there by' two powerful arms. "You stole my muff," shrieked the girl in the sealskin sacque. "You're a lair, I didn't," returned the excited female to whom this ac- cusation was addressed. Then the accuser seized the skates of the accused and dealt her a blow on the head with them, whereat the accused doubled up her little hand and hit her opponent squarely on the eye, discoloring it. Meantime the tall bine-eyed blonde in the striped ulster stood passively by. When policeman Forest turned the o'rner the girl who appeared to be the aggressor jumped into a coupe that awaited her and drove several yards down King street. 'Then she alighted and returned to the scene of the fight, where her autng ovist wits being interrogated by the office'. "If there wasn't such a crowd here I'd splash your face," hissed the girl who wore the sealskin. "I live at 435 Ontario street. 'that's where I live," she added for the information of the other should she desire to fight it out at any future time. "Well, I live at 62 Berkeley street,' intimated her opponent, and with her male escort she started eastward. "0, come on, Mamie," plead• ed the blue-eyed blonde, and Mamie after inviting the policeman to arrest her, and giving a defiant toss of her head, sauntered off and climbed into her coupe. , 1889. 1tB per's Bazar.
