NOTES AND CONIDIENTS.
(Too late for last week.) •
As it is almost certain that the NE
ERA will be filled,thisand followingweek
with local show reports, its readers wi
pay but little attention to lengthy de
criptions of similar things from a di
tanoe, itherefore I will be brief and to th
point in giving further items relating t
the fair lust closed here, I think all wi
agree with me in saying that it is un
necessary to say much about agricultu
ral stock,, as it has so, often and full
been described before that nothin
fresh can be said about it, in fact,
think perfection has been attained, an
the only effect of prizes being still of
fered for the best, is that the presen
standard will be maintained. In horses
horned cattle, sheep and pigs the sho
was all that could be desired; the onl
department of live stock that appear
ed to have improved. was the poul
try, and that was caused, in a grea
measure, by the erection of large
and better buildings to exhibit in
certainly :never was there a large
and better show of poultry, than they
was on this occasion; it included every
thing that is raised in Canada of th
feathered tribe, for thertable and orna-
mental purposes. Poultry raising has
become a very important department of
agriculture, and as cities and towns in-
crease in population will become more
profitable.
The extent of the grounds, number
and variety of exhibits, and other mat-
ters of attraction, of the Toronto In-
dustrial Exhibition have grown to such
a degree that to see them all with any
degree of satisfaction, a person should
devote two or three days to that object,
and come prepared for it. As the fire-
works, and burning of the cities repre-
sented by the paintings, takes place
late in the evening, all should take the
precaution of providing more clothing
than necessary for the day's wear. It
will save many from catching a•severe
cold, and perhaps a fatal termination.
I have not attempted to give a de-
tailed description of any of the varied
agricultural implements, because they
are not only so numerous, but it would
require an expert to give an intelligible
description of their virtues and, values.
No person Should fail to attend these
exhibitions, as their is always some-
thing new to be seen and learned, and
in these days of push and competition
no one can successfully carry on any
industry without being posted as to the
new inventions andimprovements in
their line of business.
These exhibitions can no longer, be
called agricultural, as that is.becoming
rather a secondary feature of them,
which is unavoidable, as the making of
them pay expenses is a necessity, there-
fore` the managers are compelled to
provide attractions that will draw the
crowd. And these will always be only
of a sighlAseeing character. That;s the
alternotive, and it must be submitted
to, no matter what may be thought of
its degrading and vitiating tendency.
Owing to the inclemency of the wea-
ther there was a slight falling_ off in the
attendance, compared with last year,
but larger than the year previous, but
notwithstanding this decline in gate
receipts, I believe the total receipts will
equal, if not surpass, those of last year,
as more was received for refreshment
booths, etc., and a fee was charged for
the dog show, which was largely pat-
ronized.
Now thatit is felt to be certain that
the Provincial Exhibition has made itt
last appearance; f4ery effort will be
made by the various cities to make
their independent ones more attractive.
