Our editorial and other interesting 1e, matter is unavoidably crowded out this week__. --_-,-..--.. -^_- Huron' Wad in • Fair A (creat All Itoulid Success• Congratulations were the order of the .1'' day ox Friday last. The Huron Can. '; tral Fair was over, and had been an un. } doubted and admitted success. ,Q` In ;i'- Make up, in attractions, in exhibits, in entries, in crowds, in amusements, in "Il weather, in fact in everything, there ; was comple, tel satisfaction. To those who had worked so hard from first to last, this result• of their labors must be very gratifying, As in all such matters ..- the bulk of the work fell to the lot of f'' a few. Some of them we know gave up their holidays to devote the time to the interests of the Fair. Some were on the grounds or in the buildings every day for a week before the opening. A 4 , Citizen's Committee of 'energetic men lent their assistance, and in these vari- i. ous ways the'work was well and cue• r ' • oessfally done. '- We well remember the many remarks ,i of a doubtful nature made by both " townspeople and outsiders, a year ago, ''- when a few valiant members of the p, Agricultural Society resolved to make t' an effort to lift the Annual Exhibition P' - 0 4 out of the ruts into which it bad fallen, and put into it some life find energy, 'p The response to the appeal then made i was half -Hearted died not very big. The '.} new directorate, bowever, - undaunted twent into a fair on a larger scale, quad- , rupled the amount spent in printer's 1. ink, increased the prize money, enlarged the list, and in many other ways im- .' proved upon the'old order of things. 1 Their venture paid, and everyone was ready to •say "it's a great success." ' This year's Board had no shrugging shoulders to meet, when a canvas for fnnds was made. The citizens seemed anxious to 1pelp. Every suggestion of improvement or attraction was enthu- siastically taken up. The membership largely increased, the entries nearly .. doubled with an entrance fee ut in c two the recei_pts•increa,sed,•the atten• . , dance. comes from every part of tile' .. county, apd many places outside, and 1;. the universal verdict is " You "have ' made the Huron Central the leading Fair of the county, and secured for Clinton a permanent exhibition." -. We have. heard"It suggested that _ . some mark of appreciation should be shown to those who have been chiefly `instrumental in bringing -about this change, and we trust tile. suggestion w „--, ' will take tangible shape and be carried , out; If we hs;d a dinner together it might be of great benefit in discussing iuture, plal,s, and uniting our citizens ib carrying them out. isLir.'AZAL Rt0IARKS. I3y Ever-one.., Give the honor where it is due. The few boys who took hold last year and ' gave the first impetus to the Fair de• serve medals, • One judge oai;h in the horse and cat• tie departments, brought from a dis- tance, would be preferable to the pre• sent system. The judging should be in every way above suspicion. Clinton has. shown that by a union of heart and hand the town can do any• . thing in the Fair line. Not for a long time has there been such thorough and united action by our citizens. What will be the attractions for next u- 'R, year? Just leave that to the President and Secretary, and if they can't devise something it will be because there is th• r+ no ing nen to be devised under the sun, Friend MoLean, of the Expositor, and oar esteeined totem. Mitchell, of ;#he Star, did us up proudly last week. 'They are men of sense, and 'know a good thing when they see it. The Hu- ron Central was glad to see them, and hopes they'll come again. The boys. in red looked fine. They marched at the head of the procession conscious of occupying their proper place. The officers are undoubtedly pushing this company to the fore. It is no easy tasit to ]seep a. company to- t - gether, but Capt. Todd, with his ami- ' able Lieats., seems to be able for the job. Success to Co. 4. The Doherty Organ Factcry never does anything by halves.• Their exhibit and stand was fine, their turnout in the procession finer„ and the four -horsed carriage of their chief finest., . What the town benefits -by a manufacturing establishment of the important dimen- si"ns of the Dcherty Organ Factory could• be partially gathered from a glance at the solid men who marched in the trades procession, 1V. D., -may your shadow never decrease. . '.Che big potato competition was a keen and amusing one, The boys have been jokin4 one another for weeks about it, and telling wonAerral tales about • gigantic potatoes growing for the occa• sion. Councillor Johnston, however, -, was quietly poking one of big up, and it bore off the red ticket. Sandy AJac- kenzie, however, smiled all over, when be discovered that he had the two heaviest ones. The business men who went into the trades procession with such vim deserve every praise. Some of them went to a great deal of work and expense,to make a good shooing, and well they did it, The appeal to take• part was heartily responded to, and the whole affair was extremely creditable. ftY""'Yr Our Junior Organ Industry made a good showing. There is something in the. boyar and they are going to get along. Their display was handsome, and their quota to the fair's success was not small. The musical clock de- lighted great crowds, and the minstrel- sy of the boys "took the cake." The concerts given all he time at the stands of the musical Exhibits made things lively. Some of the solo selec- tions by DIr Shearer and other instru- mentalists were worthy of any high class concert. The band really did excellent service, Leader Cornelina is the right man in the right place. Their sweet strains were heard in every procession, anrd constantly during the clay and evenings at the Nair they made things lively, Few bands can compare with it. ' lis,. .
