On the other hand it was claimed', that 'notwithstanding the lull in general business, Canada was be - ter conditioned and more prosper- ous than any other country on the globe." From this we infer that no reliance whatever is to be placed on the claims of the opposition. 'Even figures, which it is said can- not lie, show a very different foot- ing, according to the party that formulates the theorem. Our kickers (and with all their faults we love them still) ground their chief complaint on our popu- lation, which is not so large as it should be. It is the gravity of the 'final drop,' the thrill of the' 'welt nerve,' the 'spatial tick' on the index of the mighty. planis- pbera of nations. Population is not a sure criterion to judge wealth by, it is the integral ad- vance, the individuality attained by a country, that marks ,its pro- gress. - Canada is ' .E'Pluribus Unum,' one of the" many component parts of earth's' greatest, richest, freest, strongest empire in Dither present or past ages. Many generations aro passed since England rose above the sphere of boasting. Her national supremacy is established, and all the world acknowledges it. Wherever her flag is raised,, there is freedom. Oppression cannot breathe in Britains domain. 'Hold 1' says one, (a kicker or a Yankee) 'you forget down -trodden Ireland, with its evictions, assassi- nations and agrarian murders.' Not so., friend, we heard all about it. The month of May in Now York city sees more evictions than are effected in that green isle in a year, and there were more murders last year in a single' county in Michigan (Wayne) than in all Ireland. So said Mr Abbott in a late speech, in the Legisla- tive Chambers. at Lansing, in the wolverine State. In Ireland there is tin.•element whose intrinsic factor is turbu- lency. It was always there, though Dr Keating tries to cover the fact in his excellent history of' the down -trodden island, but he only makes their innate restlessness more apparent, Nevertheless, the Yankees are so very anxious on the subject, that a fully de- veloped Fenian is deemed fit to represent the United Staten in foreign courts as American Conn - sal. Are wo Canadians ready, for any number of dollars and cents, to sever' our proud position, as an integer in the British-Empire,and lose odr identity in the neighbor- ing Republic ? A country with- out a name. Wo trust not. upon the convention. Mr. Press Whitaker of the Mansion bone intimates that the main effort of the conven- tion will be to fix a precise and unchangeable date upon which strawberries shall be served In shortcake, there beim, ruinous tendency on the part of some hotels in she eastern por- tion of the state to begin the service of this delicacy before the frost ie out of the ground. Tho popular belief that a hotel register is the unfailing index of the guests of the house is some times erroneous, as 'was made evi- dent at the Manston House in 'this city on Sunday evening when a gentleman whose shoulders were about a yard .wide, whose black hair was closely cropped, and whose hands were about the color of raw beef, swaggered into the supper room end took a seat at a conspicuous table. The name of the individual appeared on the betel register Rev. Edmund Edwards of Westminster, Eng., but ha hadn't got as far as the third bite in his piece of broiled white fish before the news bad spread through the dining room that his name was Charley Mitchell of Eng- land. It was indeed the pugnacious com- panion of KUrain and ,ret while plaything of John L Sullivan He bad arrived in Buf- falo suddenly from the Canadian border and was bent upon smuggling himself in cog. to New York, from which pofnt, he'announced, be would take the fret steamer for the other side. He left here on rho ..evening train, ao- companied to the depot by an -admiring throng. Great indeed is the glory of a prize fighter in this generation. One of the characters of Buffalo who sel- dom makes himself visible on the streets, but IB nevertheless actively engaged In that line of business most commonly affected by New York aldermen, is an individual known as Col. Cooper. The peculiaritAnt this gentle- man is that he is seven feet eight inches in height. It is commonly reported that on more than ono occasion people of temporarily disordered nerves, who have accidently strayed into Col. Cooper's "place" on Main street, have been so etartl.d at the extraord- inary spectacle of this human telescope un- folding itself, as to flee from the, sight in ter- ror. error. When the Colonel sits at his bar he has the appearance of an ordinary sized man with an abnormally large head, his nose be- ing about four inches in length. When . he rises to wait on a customer be seems to come up from tiie cellar, and before the atartled customer knows what has happened, a gruff voice from the region of the root roars down the inquiry as to what be will have. This Col. Cooper, is a retired member of the Congress. of Giants, which Barnum carried'around'Che country a few yeare ago. He has taken up his abode here permanently with his equally distinguished wife who was formerly the $10,000 prize beauty of, circus fames The eight of this retired giant, if 1 may use that expression, bending himself nearly double to get into a barber shop this morn - big, recalls an announcement which I have recently seen to the elect that there are Oo be a curious lot of human beings on exhibi- tion xhib -tion at the International Fair this year. I don't mean freaks or people of the dime museum order, but genuine representatives of remoto and unfamiliar tribes. For ex- ample there is to be a band of Mils, some Hottentots, Samoan, and a most tnteresttng quartette of musical Oantemalians. From this peculiarly constructed ash these native Gaytamalfans, by the use of drum sticks produce a volume of sound which is simply astonishing and really beautiful Thera is nothing of the tom-tom order•about their music. They play a class of melodies which I should say were of Spanish origin and which are simply capti- vating. 1 was talking with the Secretary, of the Fair the other day and asked him if it were not rather a new departure for an Exposition such as is held here, to go into this line of at- tractions. His reply was to the point. "Our atm," said he, "is to have something to amuse and instruct all possible varieties of visitors A fair_whichis simply agricultural and in- dustrinl does not 'meet our requirements; We propose to have an exposition of as many curious, amusing and instructive features as it is possible to obtain, and while we are giving even more attention than we did last year to .the live stock exhibition, we are branching out to every other direction as well" The inventors' exhibition, about which I bops to tell you at length in a subsequent letter, promises to be a most deeply interest- ing feature of the Fair. What could possibly be more interesting than a comprehensive.,, collection of curious patented models in operation. Already the ambitious Inventors who bope some day to harness the power of Niagara to the uses of manufacture are, 1 am told, applying in large numbers for space along the banks of the minature Niagara river, which is to be constructed on the Fair grounds. This river is to be several feet wide and will obtain Its rapid current from a supply of water in huge elevated veaer- ust at preseplr the chief topic of Interest in Buffalo, not only among the lover's of horse flesh but among the public at large, G the great race between the two leading lights of the Wilkes and Almont families, which It Is reported will occur during the grand alrcult meeting hero in August. We noticed lately in the' col- umns of a kicker, a tabulated view of what Canada would gain in the sale of her cereals, if we had un- restricted reciprocity. The fig- ures made us think of the Moorish King-Boabdil's theoryofgoing to war. He, with a dozen men, would ' 'challenge as many of the enemy's soldiers to fight a duel, kill them, and •ehallenge another dozen ; kill them, and challenge others, and so on, till their foes were all killed. Boabdil could not be- lieve • any of his own men would be hurt in his duel war, neither did our tabulating kicker consider that while he avoided the customs duties,; direct taxation would ab- sorb the profits. Contradiction is not argument, nor is 'flow do you know,' irre- futable reasoning. Reciprocity would revolutionize our financial concernment, shut the door in England's face, and render Cana- da a slaughter house for tho Unit- ed States, who would buy all we had to sell, and we would bo ob- liged to go to Y arkeotown to buy all we 'wanted, because, with a 40 per cent tariff against us,we could buy no more from England. Wo would respectfully suggest that those who advocate closer union with the Republic, bo kind enough to exhibit their pot fad in detail, loss of revenue, direct taxation, glutted markets, restricted com- merce, etc., toll it all. C [Our correspondent just does in part of this letter, what he blames the so-called kickers for doing:— He assumes that curtain things world result from certain actions, but advances no proof' in support of his assumption. As a matter of fact, our trade with the United States last year was 811,000,000 .more than with England'. - (Soo Trade and Navigation returns.) 56 that already wo have shut the door in England's face to that ex- tent. If Reciprocity would bring about diract taxation it would in that way alone prove of inesti- mable benefit, because direet taxa- tion is the cheapest way of raising revenue. --En. Nov ERA.1 - W. . L.
