MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKET
During the week there were moder-
ate receipts and a. fairly brisk trade. in
cattle. Among them were some extra
good choice clippers. The city markets
report a good trade at high prices.
Sheep in good demand, particularly
.those for export. About 460 butchers'
-battle, 200 calves and .350 sheep and
lambs offered at the East End abattoir.
Trade was active and the 'best beeve's
were held at firm rates. Several lots
of the best sold at 41c, with good fat
cows and fair conditioned steers at 3.c
to 4ic. Many of the best calves and
lambs were bought up before reaching
the market. Calves from 83 to 88 each.
Lambs from 82 to 85 Only choice
lambs bring over 84:" Fat hogs higher,
about 51c. The horse market has been
quiet of late owing to the scarcity of
horses for the American market. Dur-
ing the week the shipments from here
to the United States were eight stal-
lions costing 83,610, and 48 other hors-
es costing 84,953, or an average -of 8103.-
19 each. Cables from London report a
moderate supply of Canadian live stock,
with a fair amount of business at steady
prices.
ANCIENT ENGLISH.
7'o the Editor of the Clinton New Era.
DEAR SIR,—Thinking it might be in-
teresting to some of your readers, I will
send you a piece of composition from a
book in my possession, which is given
"verbatum, et literatim."
William Caxton, who first introduced
printing into England, in a book pub-
lished in 1490, speaking of the innova-
tions of the English language, says :
" When I had advised me in this
sayd booke, I delyberated and conclud-
ed to translate it .into Englyshe, and
forthwyth I toke a pen and ynk, and
wrote a leaf or twyne, which I ouer-,
save agayn to corrects it ; and when I
saw the fayr and straunge termes there-
in, I doubted that it sholde please some
"gentylmen which had late blamed me,
saying ,that -in my translacyons I had
over curyous termes therein which coude
not be understande of comyn people,
and desired me to use olds and homely
termes is niy trtranslueyons,• and fayn
would I satisfye every man ; and. so tp
do, Coke an olde boke and redde therein,
'and certaynly,-the En ;lishe was sb rude
and brood, that •I coude not wele under-
stande it.. And also my Lord Abbot of
R'estmydster ded So shewe to me cer-
tain evydences wryten in old Englysshe
for to reduce it into our Englisshe now
used, and certaynly it -was wreton in
such wyse, that it was more lyke Dtitche
than Englyshe. I coude not reduce me
bryne it to be understonden. And cer-
taynly our language now used varyeth
ferre from that which was used and
spoken when I was born. For we Eng
lishmen ben borne under the domyna-
c 'on of the mono, which is never stead -
f ste, but ever waverynge, wexyng one
s sl c and waneth and discre rsetlt an-
other
 ) c f t
other season ; and that comyu Englisshe
that. is spoken In one sliyre varyeth
from another. Certainly it is hard to
i layse every roan bycanse of dyversite
and chaunge of langage; for in these
days every man that is in ony roputa-
cyon in his countree will -utter his com-
nninicacyon and matters in'such man-
ors and termes, that fewe men shall
understonde them andisom honest and
g g reate clei•kea have been wyth ole and
desired cue to wryte the rnoste euryous
termes that I condo fine. And thus
between playn, rude and curious I stand
abashed. But in my judgnnattn the
corny]; termes that be dayli used ben
lighter to be understot)de than the olde
anneyent Englissh."
The Senate of the University of To-
ronto has resolved to confer the degree
of LL. D. on Sir John Macdonald, Ed-
4vard Blake, Chancellor Boyd, Olider
Mowat, W. R. Meredith, 1)r. W. T.
Aikins, Prof. John Campbell and John
Hoskins, Q. C. This is the first time
the university has exercised the power
conferred upon it by the Federation Act
of conferring honorary degrees of LL.D.

If you haven't bought your ticket
you can't go to Europe this season be-
fore midsummer. • The transportation
facilities are greater than ever before,
but the craze for European travel beats
anything over known. Tho same story
is told at all the steamship offices. A
few berths will bo surrendered by per•
sons whose plans pliscarry, but practi-
ally all the lines are booked to their
full capacity up to about the middle of
July.
It has been long a question without
an answer, "Where do donkeys go when
when they die?" But now a matter of
greater mystery claims attention.
"What becomes of old pianos?"
They aay that the old moons are tut
up into stars; can it be so that the old
pianos are raised into those tinkling
horrors that infest our streets? Or are
they, having the works taken out,
turned into mangles or made onto book-
cases, or turn.,up bedsteda? Every day
thousands of brand new pianos are
turned loose upon the public, from
makers whose names ere legion.
Enough, one would think, to supply
each house with a "singing table" as the
Indians call it, and still the supply
"flows on forever", like the river in the
ballad. There is a sort of counter.
enrrent, to be sure, in the old pianos,
taken in exchange as part payment for
new ones. But there are thonsands
more whose fate is cnveloi,Nd ill nhsenr-
