MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKET
The export season having fairly open•
ed, there are large receipts of live stock
and a brisk trade in general. We quote
a shade higher prices all round. About
350 head of butchers' cattle, 300 calves
and 150 sheep and lambs offered at the
East End abbattoir. There were many
more at the Point St. Charles wharves.
Business was fairly active, with prices
"ricirSo hrg11-"Prune beeves sold iri `lots
at about 4 o, the best at 41c, pretty
good at from 3ic 4}e. The best calves
were sold before reaching the market
at from $5 to $8 each. There was an
active demand for mutton at about 5c.
A lot of rather entail lambs were diffi-
cult to sell and have been losing fat.
General prices were good, from $3 to $4•
each. Fat hogs scarce, the latest sales
being at 51c for fed hogs and 6c for those
just off the cars. A London cable re-
ports that prospects for Canadian cattle
are fair. A deputation of live stock
exporters from Toronto are here to
meet the Board of Trade of Montreal
to solicit their support against the pre-
sent steamship combine in freights and
insurance.
On Sunday morning Mrs Hopkins
left her home at New Glascoe to go for
milk. In her absence one of theiohild-
ren attemped to light the fire with ker-
osene and on her return she found the
house in flames. Her youngest child,
aged two years, was roasted alive in the
building.
