This being a holiday there were not many butchers present in the early part of the day but the drovers would not give way ft'bm the prices of last Thurs- day, which were from $3 to $5 per head higher than was paid here two weeks ago. Only a few sales were made early in the day, but more will be done later on after church time. A few very choice beeves were held at 5c per lb., but none of the sales exceeded 410 do., with pretty good cattle at about 4c, and common stock from 3ic to 3o per lo. Leanish beasts sold at from 2c to, Sic, and bulls at from 3c to 4o per lb., ant a couple of very fine large bulls was held at over 4c per lb. Our Canadian Apple Trade. Mr. D. Allen, the President of the Ontario Fruit, Grower's Association, gave some good points on our foreign apple trade at the Dominion Farmers Council recently. fie said that al- though the large crop this year had. depressed "prices, yet for first-class fruit had made a good sensor." He said, however, one thing that should be remedied in our trade relations with the Liverpool and London mar- kets was to get our fruit direct to the t:ifferent commercial centres without being manipulated by commission merchants so much. There had been a fair demand for our fruit, but these commission men would not sell 'to the retail .dealers, and the 'consequence was the transaction had to go through the hands of some wholesale dealer,, and hence the profits were distribut- ed amnugst too many middlemen. It was the intention of an influential company in this country to place Canadian apples directly into all the cities and towns 'in Great Britain without this commision handling. Io answer to a question whether there was not a danger of Ontario over •pro- ducing.frait for the British market, he said,:nn;, that England wanted . all the fruit we could snare, but it should be of first-class quality and, packed in the most inviting style. " In fact, the mojurity of our farmers were growing a class of apples that were golug, out of date in the English market. At one time the high colored apples took the best whether they had quality or n"t, but now the foreign buyers look- ed to quality and flavor. Every farm- er and shipper shouId brand his pack= and always stick to this brand and deal honestly with the English buyers, and this would establish confi• dente and a fixed i.rade; and by thus doing a steady and remunerative trade could be maintained, for no country in the wort 1 prudde.•s the .acne flav- ored apples a., this western Ontario. If shippers hrre would guarantee a standard hr.uid they could get ca -h on their rhipnlrnts in London here. Mr AIlen's rt'Inari s all through were tit the c'fiect that we •had to look to Great Britain btr :t market fon our surl•lu+ products, and in the c.ise of apples we had to grow standard varieties and thn-le he -t adapted fur the foreign market.
