We tenderly, tenderly laid her to rest,
Down in the cold, damp earth,
Placed the sweet lily •of peace on her
breast,
Emblem of beauty and worth,
Beautiful, beautiful slumber in•peace,
Vain are the toils and strife
Of this wheeling world and its jostling
• race,
To rouse from thy better life.
As a fading flower, as a golden hour
.Passes the time of youth ;
Likea hidden gem in a deep sea bower,
Life is a mystic truth, • •

Sigh with a parting breath.
Hopes that have cheered, joys that
smiled • •
Wither and die in their bloom.
A heart that beats warm, and the love
of a mother
Sink in the merciless tomb.
Yet will conte a day, now fleet on the
way, •
To chill our hearts with its breath,
Beauty and love, wealth, honors .array
Sink but the•slumber of death.
Nbw we depart, but from the heart
Absence can never unlink
The long chain of love still reaches

Bi:i•.Elt THAN Evlca.—It did seem as
though the seedsmen outdid themselves
last year in the line of elaborate catalo-
gues, but hereconles Vick's Floral Guide
for 1889, from Rochester, N. Y., better
than all previous issues. "Better"hardly
expresses it—rather, we should say, far
superior. It has been changed in every
respect ; new cuts, new type enlarged in
size (opening hike.anold-fashioned sing.
ing•book); contains three elegant litho-
graphs (8x101 inches) of Roses, Geran-
iums and Melon and Tomato ; besides a
very fine plate of late James Vick and
his three sens,whonow ownandmanage
thislargebusiness, Thesefeaturesmust
make the Floral Guide valuable to their
many customers in this country. One
would think they were a little out of
their heads to offer to the public such a
work as the Guide free, for that ie what
it amounts, to, when they say it will be
sent on receipt of'fifteen cents and that
and that a certificate good fifteen cents
worth of seed will b5 returned with the
Guide.
