HURON CENTRAL EXHIBITION Al
CLINTON.
-A. THREE DAYS SUCCESS.
By the well directed efforts Of
the officers, directors and commit•
tees combined with centrality of
position and the favor= of the etc
wants the Huron Central Exhibit
tion in Clinton last week was u
pronounced success. The various
departments presented exhibits that
would be cousi.lared creditable any•
where, while in actual viz., horse's,
cattle, carriages, organs and others
we might challenge Glia world ivitlt
a fair chance of success. The
entries were very numerous and the
attendance largo -probably ' 5000
people were presout. The first day
saw everything in place. On
entering the rink hall the visitor
was first structs with the inviting
appearance of Calbick and Reith's
furniture parlur in which luxurious.
ly upholstered specimens of their
wares Seemed to say "rest thyself:"
Next in order to catch the eye was
a miniature fountain, the basin or
font of which was a striking imita-
tion of marble and was the haudi-
work of Jos. Chambora of S. D.tvis
hardware house. In various direc-
tions as the eyoa w;,uderrd Che
building over were to be Bean
marvelous specimens of feminine
taste and industry, with which the
fiord exhibit Seemed jealously to
vie iu "'Any instances. The fine
arts exhibited at the end had been
nicely arranged by Ur. Foster and
contained some meritorious pieces,
while others were more ambitious
than artistic. There was an ezoell-
ant display of fruit, as 'alyo voge-
tables, Jos. Allanson as astral being
the autocrat in the latter line. • A
pleasing exhibit that gave an idea
of the progress of the couutty in
the manufacture of hardware goods
was that of R. AI. Racey. It was a
happy thought of Mr. It. to place
conspicuously before the, public
various samples in irom,ongery in
unfinished and finish& d state. The
best in every line was to be soon
and all of Canadian manufacture.
Whatever the cause that has made
the change there was not an import-
ed article amongst• the lot. It is all
advantage to our manufacturers to -
thus have their best goods. placed
before the consuming public :by the
retail merchant. An examination
of them -has a tendeucy to create a
demand for the best which is always
-most profitable to the consumer and
most satisfactory io the manufacturer:
As an illustration of the class of
goods exhibited by Mr. Racey we
may, mention that on' some one
asking if a highly polished hand
saw was of Canadian make, and get
Ling the reply that it was made by
R. H. Smith & Co., St. Catharines,
he seemed quite surprised thereat
and still more so when a master
,builder--piwent stated that these
saws were superior to any other
iWtde, being better ground and fin'-
ished, and -that his employees would
not have any other. All manufac-
turers should roe that some local
dealer have their beat goods brought
before the public at these exhli•
tions. It would unquestionably
create -an enquiry for a better class
of goods than is usually obtainable.
The public have no correct idea of
the better class of goods that is
made. Among the other exhibits
by Mr. Racey wero coach colors and
ready-made paints from W.:Johnson
& Co., Montreal ; window shades
front Hess & Anderson, Toronto;
}corse shoes, out nails, brads and
tacks from the Montreal Rolling
Mills Co.; rope from A. W. XlorriS
& Bro., Montreal ; brushes from
Aleakir. & Son, Hamilton ; horse
nails from the I•Iorse Nail Co.,
Alont'real; improved fifth wheel,
springs, ,stops, Axles etc Grum the
Dundas Drop Forgiug'Co,,Dundas,
and pressed horse shoes in different
stages of manufacture: The glitter-
ing steel and dead surface irou' in
this exhibit WAR brought out in nice
relief by its artistic' arrangement
and much onhanced by a crimson
background. On the „othor side of
the building was a very fine exhibit
of stoves and other hardware by
Harland Bros. This firm also
exhibited a wood furnace of their.
own make and invention. The
Sample seemed to attract much
attention and they made several
Sales. This season their sales of this
furnace haveho far been ten to ono last
season. It is highly recommended
by those who have put them in.
Their embossed stove pipe presont-
ed a vary handsome -appearance
and wits much admired.
Detlor & Co, exhibited it case of
