By this time Tad had his father by

Secretary Seward was shaken with
laughter. Mr." Lincoln turned to him
with a twinkle : "Seward; advise with
me. This case requires diplomacy."
Mr. Seward patted Tad on the back

President took Tad' S little brown haat

Ready Wit.
None of the professions seem more de-
voted to ready wit than that of the law;
and, judging from the following story,
this devotion is of no recent origin. It is
related that on One occasion Sir Nicholas
Bacon was about to pass judgment upon
a man who had been guilty of robbery,
at that time punishable by -death: but
the culprit -pleaded for mercy on the
ground that he was related to the judge.
"How is that ?" he was asked. "My
lord," was the reply, "your natne is.

bacon have always been considered
akin." "That is true," answered Sir
Nicholas; "bat as hog is not bacon until

between a judge and a prominent coun-
sel, the former said: "Well, sir, if you

replied : "That is sO, my lord."

a good field for the exercise of wit. At

A Joyous Meeting,
A despatch from St. Paul dated April
25th, says: One of the trains from
Chicago arriving to -day brought Frakin
Bjornson, a young lady who was one of
the passengers of the lost steamer Dan-
mark. She cannot speak English, but
with the assistance of an interpreter she
succeeded in informing the authorities of
the fact just stated and that she expect-
ed a gentleman to meet her at the Union
depot 'here. But no one came. The
young woman was much worried', being
entirely alone 4,d without friends
in this vicinity-(,' She finally deter-
mined to wait at an uptown hotel
whither she was directed. Soon after-
wards the train from Aberdeen, Dakota,
arrived, bringing a young man who at
once inquired for a, young lady answer-
ing to the description of Miss Bjornson.
In ia little while the lady appeared, to
renew her inquiries for the man she
wanted to see, and the two met. --The
scene was affecting in the extreme. It
was learned that Miss Bjornson is a
Swedishheiress, who had come to this
country to meet her, lover, a. prosperous
young physician of Aberdeen. After
years of separation, after she, had pass-
ed 'through all the shipwreck upon the
ocean,
after he had laid the foundations
of a home in the west they atlast found
each other and were , happy. Miss
-Bjornson is handsome and highly.
educated. The couple took guarters at
a hotel, and were Married this evening,
and to -morrow will leave for their future
home in Aberdeen..
-Warner's Safe Cure removes defec-
tive vision or sight. Why? Because it
gets rid of the poisonous kidney acid
circulating in the blood. Impaired vis-
ion is caused by, advanced kidney dis-
ease, another name for Bright's disease,
which "has no sympton of its own."
Warner's Safe Cure removes the cause,
when normal vision returns.
Rev. John McNeill in London.
Mr. McNeill 'nay be fairly said to be
taking London by storm. For the time
being there is no minister, however
popular, whose name is so much in
men's mouths, or whose success is so
much quoted as his. Already it has be-
come necessary for the regular seat-
• hOlders in his 'church, who wish to se-
cure their seats, to be in the pews
twenty minutes before the fixed time of
worship; and when the public are ad-
• mitted, the church becomes in a few
minutes crowded to its utmost capacity.
•
-A cyclone struck the town of War-
saw at four o'clock on the morning of
May 2nd. Hail fell with Such rapidity
and violence as to lie eight inches deep
in thirty-six seconds. Many small
houses were blown away, and large
houses were torn up so that they were
not habitable. Xhe seminary building
• was split open and nearly destroyed.
The Presbyterian church was demolished
and fences were torn up and scattered.'
No lives were lost, but many people
were seriously hurt by flying thnbers.
-Judge!' at the recent assizes, especi-
ally in the Midland districts of England,
have again had frequent occasion to de-
nounce the appalling number of child
murders in which it was impossible to
bring the inhuman parents to justice.
The favorite method is to suffocate a
child in bed, and then swear it was acci-
dentally overlain ; but as in nearly
every case the poor little victim proves
to. have been insured, the accident
theory scarcely bears examination. No-
body is ready with a remedy, except
passing a bill rendering illegal or rigidly
restraining infantile insurances.
-Mr. john D. Maclean, president of -
the Bank of Nova Scotia, and one of the
prominent mercantile men of the Mari-
time Provinces, died in Halifax a couple
of weeks ago. Mr. Maclean was not
only widely known, as an upright man of
business, but also as prominent in rellg-
ious, charitable, and ,philanthropic cir-
cles. He was. leader for many years in
Young Men's - Christian !Association
work, and was especially ,friendly to
young men beginning business life. Mr.
Maclean carried his religion into his
business, in so far as fair and upright
dealing wanconcerned, and the best evi-
dence of the esteem in which he - was
held by his -fellow -citizens was ',afforded,
by Ms funeral, which was attended by
several hundreds of the business men of
Halifax of every creed and class. Such
men are Comparativcly rare, and their
example is to be commended to young
business men beginning ° commercial
life.
