Th se Apache girls were brought a
few'irknths ago from camps three hund-
red miles away to the queer -old town
of Sa ts, Fe. They have been trans-
formed in this school from dirty, thin-
faceci unkempt girls in moccasins, buck-
skins,: blankets- and paint, into eager
pupi14 who are dressed and can read;
• write; draw, sing, sew and worklike the
American white girls in our own homes.
. These children are all genuine Apa-
ches, yet show traits which surprise
thoselwho have despised the Indian.
Theystre not inferior in capabilities to
white.i children. They learn quickly, are
apt k number -work - and imitative
studies, like drawing, writing and sing-
ing.- tg, They readily catch hold of the
formeof words and at, once associate
with them their objects or ideas. 'They
learn the letters -withoot any particular
effortlof teaching. , They have to learn
everything, as -we 'learn a -foreign
language, as English is to them a foreign
iangi+get They understand it more
easily than they speak it. -
• ir interest in domestic occupa-
tions is marked. They prefer their
sewi -classes to play, and their trained
eyes nil muscles make accurate stitches.
At th age Of ten air eleven they cut and
mike their under-garznents, aprons and
plain lresses, and do . every kind of sew-
ing t at is required in the herns, gathers,
Weer -fitting, overcasting and button-

Docking Horses' Tans.
in a recent issue of Epoch, Henry
Bergh, the president Of the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, writes is follows : " I regard -
the docking of horses' tails as one of the
worst forms of cruelty, not so much on
account of the pain inflioped in outting
the tails off, theugh that must be Con-
siderable -the tail being a continuation
of the :vertebral column -but because
the animal is thus deprived of the only
means he • has of protecting himself
.against insects. How would it be if a
pan's arms. were cut off short at the
shoulder, and he had no -means of brush-
ing the flies from off his head or hilt
nose? Would not the torture be great?
A person suffering from such a deprive.-
, tion would realize theoruelty of cutting
off a horse's tail. - .
The people Who resort to this practice
are simply aping a fashion that has corn
from England. They sometinuni use as
in argument that a horse's tail gets over
the lines, and that is annoying: If a
horse has 'a fly or an insect on his back,
:biting • and worrying him, he naturally
,swings his tail around to rid 'himself of
,the aggravation, and in so 'doing he will
• sometimes get the tail •over the lines ;
-but I do not think a little annoyance of
that kind is a sufficient excuse to inflibt
such a suffering on the animal,
This cutting of the horses' tails is one
of those dictates of fashion thattumy
mind is simply hideous, and I am sorry
to say that it is done as much now as
formerly, The, Society , is doing all it
canto prevent it. If we found any man
engaged in docking home' tails, we
would cause his attest, for we would
proceed against him for such an offense
as that. A veterinary surgeon, however
who will perfron operations of that kind
Will go tea, stable and without intprev-
ious notice, will dock a horse's tail and,
of course, we have no means of catching
him in the ad of doing so ; the work is
done in the seclusion of the stable. L
believe the operation itself hurts as
badly as the 'cutting off of a person's'
finger, perhaps it hurts more, as the
spinal marrow extends to that portion of
the vertebral column.
