EXALTS JESUS IN HIS
CLOSING SERMON
Mr. and Mn. Clarke Honored by North
• Saam
e !'orarvAJlo Farewell Gifts
The crowning o. Jesus as Lord of all
as the -only thing that really mattered in
a pastor's ministry was the thought Rev.
C. F Clarke brought out in his farewell
sermon in the pulpit of North street
United church on Sunday evening, One
might feel tempted al such a time to
speak of his expertenees and of his
frlendships, ur to go into statistics, but
these things, interesting and important
as they might seem, were of very secon-
dary importance, and.to thinking over
what he would say In los last message,
while trying to help in the job of pack-
ing, he was reminded of Ian McLaren's
story In "The Bonnie Brier Bush” of
John Carmichael, the newly-appointed
m
minister of Drutochty who was trying
to prepare a sermon that would be
worthy of the occasion, but felt impelled
to burn his carefully prepared sermon
and yield to the suggestion of the house-
keeper and 'speak a good word foe Jesus
Christ," so Mr. Clarke wished to exalt
Jesus Christ, not that anything he could
say could add to His lustre, Mr. Clarke
had chosen for his text the words front
Revelation, 'And on his head were many
crowns." The coronation of an earthly
sovereign was an oceaslon of splendor,
but it was a different sort of coronation
St. John had a vision of in the text. On
His head werc many crow
Jesus was crowned with the crown of
a perfect life. No matter what sur-
prises the woi Id might, experience there
never had been and never would be an-
other life like His. No man ever lived
like this mal, And Jesus was crowned
with the crown of His wonderful teach-
ing No man ever taught as He taught.
He taught us of God as a loving father:
He taught us of mankind as sons of
God; and His teaching as to the world
was of a world ruled and controlled by
God. And another point in which His
teaching differed from that of any other
tcancer was what He taught 08 to be lie
helped us to become. No man ever luted
like Him and no man ever died like Him,
Coming to the world for His love of man-
kind and dying for the sats of the world
Ill conclusion Mt'. Clarke expressed his
apprec'latlon of tht' y''ars ht' 11ad spent
h1
Goderich and uf the work that as
pastor and people had been accomplish-
ed, and expressed the wish that the In-
fluence of lite congregation w,luld al -
way's L,' a deeply' spiritual one
Very appropriately to his theme two
of the hymns for the service were
"Crown Him with Many Crowns" and
"Crown Him Lord of All."
