Leseort Pueage--Matthew 25:1.13.
Golden Text -Mark 13:33.
In this hhapter *here' are three
parables._ but, the subject_is one and
the same thing. In the three "Christ'
recognizes only two classes in human
life. In his most marvellous of all
addresses --his Sermon on the Mount
--he had the same twedelasses before.
him -the wise and the foolish.
"Therefore whosoever beareth these
saying of mine, and doeth them. I
will liken him unto a wise pian; and
everyone that heareth these sayings of
mine, and doeth them not, shall be lik-
ened unto a. foolish man. (Matt.
1:24. 20).
:In this parable of the ten virgins
he describes them as being equally
divided into exaetly the same classes,
arranged under the leadership of wis-
dom on the one hand and folly on the
other.
In the, parable of the ten virgins

her b':ideerntids, enpected him.
When noti..i would he giver; ut the
bridegroom's approach, they went oat
to meet him. They carried lamps in
their hands to light hint into the house
with great formality.
Whet is meant by the wise and the
feelleia virgins ? They represent t%to
body ee professing Christians, just
such as are aeseml;led together on
any Liters Ps Day in the Lord's hen en
'hey are alike in many things. They
enjoy the ewe ordinances; they utter
the eame provers end they have the
same outward behaviour...13ot there
is a difference. All carry the lamp,
which is the symbol of outward pro-
fession but only a certain number•
carry oil in their vessels. which nil is
the symbol of the inward spiritual
life.
When the cry came that the bride-
groom was coming. a discovery was
made, "Our lamps are gone out."
Their lamps went out because they
had no oil. They burned for awhile,
as a dry wick will do, often with a
great blaze, but coot!, the flame dee
eons, end it but
out for want of oil.
This is the case with hypocrites.
They have no spring of gracious oil
within their hearts.
In consequence of their unprepared-
ness they missed the opportunity of
joining the marriage procession, and
accompanying it to the feast.
"Watch," says Christ, "for ye know
not the hour." By 'preserving and
fostering the divine in us we nay heed
to his injunetion-"Be ye also ready:"
What was the reward of those
whose lamps had oil in them'? When
they heard the `"cry, though they like
the ethers had been sleeping, they
arose and :trimmed their, lamps and
went out to meet the bridegroom.
And they went in with him to the
marriage' and then the dgor•.was shut,
The period of watching was vast and
the period of unalloyed happinessbe-
gan. This is the position of the
Chnith of Christ --watching now for
the Heavenly Bridegroom, expecting
his coming and assured of his love-;
and yet not able to enter into the ful-
ness of her joy until he himself ar-
rives. and takes her to his Heavenly
Home.
