, Wintering Bees
"Experilince has shown that it is
better to winter lees outdoors than
,in the cellar unless you have an ex-
ceptionally suitable cellar," says F.
Erie Millets, Provincial Apiarist.
Eighty per cent of the honey bees
in Ontario are wintered in various
wintering MOO outdoors. In Old,
Ontario almost every beekeeper
win-
ters outside„ but in Northern Ontario
cellars are used extensively. For
successful cellar wintering, the cellar
must be absolutely dark, dry and kept
at an even temperature of about 45
degrees. Poorly insulated and dainn
cellars make poor winter storage pla-
ces for bees„ Wintering bees out-
doors means more expense, but- un-
less one has an ideal eellite, this me-
thod is recommended. Bees can he
mocked any time in October or early
November, and need no attention un-
til spring if properly prepared for
winter. Outdoor wintered bees' must
be kept in waterproof nintee cases."
