MR. BOOTH ON WORK OF •

The followinir is A su•"mery of the
address given by. Mr. Booth of the
China Inland Mission at the annual

the Bible Society on Wednesday, Oct:
27th -
This is an age, when reople desire
to know the reason why. It is, there -
fere, not unrcisonable to. ask, "Ir
there any justification for the work
of a Bible Society in, these clays?"
The work of the Bible Society is
related, particularly, to the needs of
the heathen world, Int speaking of
the heathen world it is often said
and more often thorght, that God
will overlook .their sins, to the extent
of giving them entranee into heaven.
If this is so then there is to need for
Bible Societies, for "The entrance of
Thy Word giveth light," which,for
every one that it saves, brings many
into condemnation, thus changing the
position of all being saved to that of
only a few, which would be a calam-
ity. But this is not so, for while God
is gracious and merciful, -forgiving-in-es„-,--,-:

the guilty." It is true that they have
not had the light that we have but
that will only lighten their punish-
ment. It will not bring salvation.

dealt with the condition of the heath-` -

and the conclusion of the whole mat-
ter is that, "All haye sinned."
Granted that all have sinned, may
be it is only a disease which implies
the presence of life. Some medicine
is needed, so we will give them the
best of modern education and re-
forma. If this will bring what' is
• needed to the heathen world then we
do not need the Bible •Societies, The
facts and experiences on the mission
field abundantly prove that this kirid

• does not begin to deal with the guilt
and power of sin is they know it in
