Two men in court here
Monday received sentences
of one month in the County
Jail for knowingly supplying
liquor to persons under the
legal age of 21 years.
Magistrate W. C. Pear-
son, QC, Sarnia, warned both
defendants that the minimum
penalty for first offenders
found guilty on this charge
was 30 days.
James Baillie, RR 1 Monk -
ton and Garry Shingler,RR2
Scotland pleaded guilty to
the charges as read.
Evidence revealed that
Baillie had an open case of
beer in his car. His passen-
ger, Eric Whitmarsh, 19,
Dresden, consumed some of
the beer as they drove to
Grand Bend.
Baillie testified that bar-
tenders in Dresden had serv-
ed Whitmarsh on several oc-
casions.
Shingler testified that he
had poured ,,one small
drink" each for Harold Tel-
fer, 20, Scotland and Wayne
Piccin, 19, Detroit. He stat-
ed that he had a good job
which he would hate to lose
if he had to spend time in
jail.
Magistrate Pearson re-
minded him that he had been
duly warned of the penalty
before he had pleaded guilty
to the charge, and that there
was no alternative in such
matters.
Gary McFarlane, London,
appearing on a charge of
prowling, told the court he
was “just taking a walk".
In a written statement read
in court, Mrs. Shirley Braun,
Grand Bend, testified that
about 1:10 A.M. on July 25
her dog stood by the door of
her home and growled. When
the dog was released, it cor-
nered the defendent against
the family car parked in the
yard.
McFarlane has two pre-
vious convictions and is at
the present time on pro-
bation.
The boy's father said in
court that his son had not
meant any harm.
McFarlane was released
on his own recognizance and
will appear in court here on
August 17 for sentence. Ma-
gistrate Pear son warned
McFarlane not to leave Lon-
don and that the probation of-
ficers would be notified.
An 111/10 mile stretch of
beach at Ipperwash used as
a public highway caused
some concern in court.
Two cars driven by An-
thony Bales, London, and
Gerald Huston, RR 4, Dres-
den collided on the beach
when Huston pulled out to
pass Balles on the right
hand side as Bales was at-
tempting to make a right hand
turn off the road.

Ladies Trivitt
Plan Auction
The ladies of Trivitt Me-
morial Anglican Church in
Exeter have a real job cut
out for themselves. They
have decided to repair the
slate roof on their church.
Of course they do not in-
tend the actual labour them-
selves, but they have started
a fund-raising campaign. An
Old Time Auction Sale is
planned for next week with all
proceeds going to the roof-
ing repairs.
Trivitt Memorial is one of
the oldest buildings in Exe-
ter and is patterned after a
famous church in Exeter,
England. Its stately cathed-
ral -like appearance and au-
thentic old -E ngli sh style
makes renovations and re-
pairs costly.
Undaunted the ladies want
to preserve the charm and
beauty of their church what-
ever the expense.
Mrs. Jack Fulcher says
the response has been won-
derful. Many antiques have
been donated for the sale,
among them ten pairs of
highly -prized antique wind-
ow shutters. Home baking
and freshly preserved jams
and jellies will be featured,
too.
in a written statement to

he was in the wrong to pass
on the right hand side of a
vehicle, the beach area did
not seem like a road as such.
Magistrate Pearson noted
that evidence of any neglect
on the part of Balles and Hus-
ton was wanting and dismiss-
ed both charges.
The men who save the

day's work by the day's light
and advance on chaos and
the painful dark by inches;
in other words, the prac-
tical men.
