St. John's Church
Built in 1949
Next week marks the 15th
anniversary of St. John's
By -The -Lake Anglican
Church, the familiar land-
mark on Highway 21 north,
just opposite the Oakwood
Golf Course.
Special services are plan-
ned for August 9, with the
Right Rev. George M. Lux-
ton, Bishop of Huron con-
ducting worship. Bishop
Luxton opened and dedicat-
ed the church in 1949.
A chicken barbecue is
scheduled for Saturday, Aug-
ust 8, on the newly com-
pleted, adjoining church
lawn.
Present wardens are
Clayton Mathers and Fred
Newton. Mrs. James Cut-
ting is president of the chan-
cel guild and Mrs. Frank
Plumb is president of the
Women's Association.
Built in 1949 in record
time, just 29 days a -build-
ing, the little chapel has
been enlarged twice. The
parish hall was erected in
1958 to be used for com-
munity and parish affairs.
In 1960 the sanctuary was
enlarged and re -furnished.
There have been five pas-
tors: Rev. Gordon Houghton
was first; then Rev. Morley
Pinkney, Rev. William
Bawkner, Rev. William Mill-
man and now the Rev. Ray
K. Farrell. Canon Mainwar-
ing was vacancy minister
for a short time.

Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Gadke,
Galt have been visiting Mr.
and Mrs. T. E. Montgomery;
their son, Grant Montgomery
and family have also been
their guests from London.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Laugh-
ton are on a holiday trip to
the East.
Dr. and Mrs. Charles
Fisher will fly in August for
a fishing trip to Georgian
Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Strain,
Toronto were weekend
guests at the Hagarty cot-
tage.
The Dick Taylors, Chat-
ham are at Miss VeraSclat-
er's residence. MissSclater
has been recuperating in St.
Joseph's Hospital, London
from a fall suffered in St.
Marys two weeks ago.
Marh Ashwell, London,
well-known television per-
sonality, was a recent guest
with Mrs. -Pat Murray.
Mr. and Mrs. FrankHunt-
er will leave on a trip to
northern Ontario and Ot-
tawa next Monday; Mr. and
Mrs. Bob Fairs, Stratford
will occupy their cottage in
their absence.
