A friend "gives the Prairie harmer the
following capital thing, which uow first
appears in print :—The gentleman of the
bar (legal), including several judges, had
a social reunion in Chicago the other
evening; and, of course, there was a free
flow of wit and humor. Example—In a
recent trial I had occasion to fine an Irish-
man $18 for contempt of court. He got
out his dilapidated, greasy wallet, and
handed over the money, but kept stand-
ing with an inquiring look. Asking him
what he wanted, he replied. 'Plase,
judge, give me a resate.' He was inform-
ed that no receipts were given in such
cases; that the clerk entered it upon the
docket, and that finished the transaction.
y., But he still lingered, and when again
asked why be did not leave, responded
'Why, judge, I want a resate for that
money. I'm an honest man, I nm,Judge,
and pays my debts, and keeps everything
square ; and whin I die, St Peter when be
lets me through the gate, will be asking
use about everything I done. And very
likely he'll ask me for tbe evidences, and
thin I'll not want to be hunting all
through Sheol to find you, .fudge, to git
the resale for this money.'

Commercial Union, said in that case his
firm would establish a branch in Canada,
raw materials being cheaper and nearer,

A gentleman writing from Osaka,Japan
givesa very encouraging review of the pro-
gress lof Christian civilisation in that
country. English is now taught in all the
Government schools of higher grades and
in many of the primary schools. It is
proposed to introduce tbe ,English lan•
gunge in all the schools of the Empire as
soon as practicable, and with American
or English teachers. The scholars in the
Government schools wear clothes cut in
the European fashion, and there seems to
be a universal desire to conform to the
customs of the West in the family and
social life. And, as the correspondent
says, "best of all is the sincere effort now
beiug made by many leading statesmen
and private citizens to so remodel their
society that women may be enfranchised
from the humilation to which they have
been relegated for so many centuries."
An Ottawa telegram says : The an-

Charles Tupper, is causing a great sensa-
tion. Bell said today to a cotvrespondent
that Sir Charles having charged him with
nttempied blackmail he. is now publish-
ing a phamplct, in which he intends to
show up the character of Sir Charles and
a member of Parliament named Colby,
who were at one time boarders in his
house. The pamphlet will he published
in three weeks, he says,, and until it is
given to th,e public the startling revela-
tions which Mr, Bell promises to give to (
