However, after being assured that a porous plaster is not quite so bad he took it; but I think he will try it on the barn yard pump first. Mr Hamilton seems to be the most popular man in Blytb, Pat Helly -excepted. In dictionaries you will find "iter" defined i' as a title of respect. This definition should extended, for in Canada the omission of "Mr" is an indication of preminence. Who t ever thinks of prefixing ";ter" to such names as Blake, Cameron, Porter or Kelly? It '. -, would be as superfluous as putting Rev before the name St. Paul. I culled into a couple of other stores in Blyth, but apparently mistaking me for some: benovolentindividualcollecting funds to buy speotacles to, enable Grits to see thel'beneffts of the N. P., they froze me out. While resting tinder the verandah of "mine host" of the Commercial I heard a rat story which from the earnestness with which it • was told, I think must be true. Said the truthful narrator: Last evening I went over to Jim's and bought some rat poison. Be- fore going to bed I spread it over some broad and then cut it into a number of square feces and scattered it through all the rooms x the house. In the middle of the night I 4eard a noise in m bedroom, and on look - I ingg out of bed I could see by the clear moon- , ] ght a number of rats,- each with a piece of 11fp poisoned bread in its mouth, march into tlr4 room and lay it down in what I thought was a rather peculiar order. Not wishing to disturb my wife, who always talks very sarcastically if I awake her ever since one night, when on coming home rather late, I i , as&ed her to assist me in pulling some snakes out of my boots,I covered my bead and after a time went to sleep. In the morning my , wife, who always get up first to light the fire, called my attention to the pieces of bread on the floor. I am willing (he said) to take a statutary declaration that the pieces were arranged so as to spell No Go. „ Th(Ire is no use trying to poison those rats. I su ppose by this'time they have gone over to lriedical Hall anis got an, antidote from Jim's deputy druggist. ,''' I I heard some other nat.trnl history stories which, with your permission, I sball give r with a future description of Blyth in a future issue. TEMPERANCE. - The Gospel Temper- ance me, ting held in the Temperance hail of this place, on Sabbath last, was in every respect a success. Mr Richard Adams, of,Loudesboro, had charge of the meeting. The hall was well filled, and t•he short addresses by Messrs Hendrie, Hollis and Pillman, of Seaforth, wag right to the point, and we hope at an early date we maybe favored by another of those meetings. ACCIDENT. -What might have been a sad accident happened on Saturday last to Mrs ball, sr,, of this place. She went into the horse stable, and seeing a pail under a horse's foot, attempted to remove it, when the argimal became frightened and kicked her several times, but, how- ever, she was rescued from her perilous position.
