Sive we not enough of danger
In this world, where friend and strauger
Bat too often meet disaster
Frain the ills they cannot master?
ao we say it is a pity —
a crime --that every city
Opens wide these fearful sluices
Of the traffic's vile abases.
Do we ride too safely ever
Fen with sober men mud clever
Standing at their posts of duty.
Wardens beth of atrength and beauty
Shall we dim the eyes that Kiloton ?
Shall wo dull the ears that listen,
Lest the train, with crash and thunder,
Tells a tale of reckless wonder?
Will ye tell us the relation
Of the drink shop to the station.
O ye wise and rich directors—
Ye who sought to be protectors
Of the public who are patrons,
With their children who aro matrons?
What theneud of tempting glaeses
When the horse of iron passes?
Willhe turn him off the switoltes?
Will he plunge him down the ditches?
Shall the steed be driveu quicker
By the fiery touch of liquor ?
Shall the brakeman a hand unsteady.
Fail a moment to be toady,
Wbon the peril wild approaches,
Bringing danger to the coaches?
--(Shall the Moloch of the agi e
Spoil us by the war he wages,
With his altars on the.highwaya,
With his vietimaiu the byeways ?
Shall we feel his scorn forever,
With no resolute endeavor
Firm to stand, our own defenders,
Till the pirate tide surrenders ?
Freemen, up 1 another trial
Cometh noon, and your denial,
When the call of duty urges,
Leaves the land to fiercer scourges,
Up 1 with band and heart united,
Iu a holy crusade plighted,
Till ye see the temperance banner
Shouted high with glad hosanna.

Royal Templars, whero'er
See men are dying sure but Blow,
By this demon, this cursed drink,
Nor will'they even stop to think.
On they go, like beasts to slaughter,
Caring not for wife or daughter ;
Marching on to the drunkard's woe,
Sin and sorrow is all they know.
Oh ! Royal Templars, a ve the boys,
Their father's pride and mother's joys,
Get them in our ranks, and then
They'll make both good and useful men.
We'll get them all to sign the pledge,
And then anrround •hem like a hedge,
And keep them from the paths of sin,
Nor will we let the tempter in.
Away this demon from our land,
Away with rum on every hand,
Away with the dietilleries too,
.Away with brewers and their crew,
Away with those that sell the stuff,
Till men shall know they've had enough
To make their cup run o'er with woe,
Or down to hell they're sure to go.
Go, Royal Templars, and attend
The bedside of a dying friend,
Give him relief with mortal care,
And show 'to him that you are there,
To dress his wounds or ease his pain,
And of your efforts don't complain ;
Who knows how soon you too may need
. The care of friends around your bed.
Coine Templars, see the widows need,
And the poor orphans help to feed
With you 'tis only just n drop,
Bat 'twill the want and hunger stop. .
Your children, too, may see the day
When others cat. your bounty pay ;
.And God will bless your effort too,
And make a place in heaven for you.

A San Antonio, Texas,despatch says:
The story of a singular and serious acci-
dent comes from a German settlement
near New Braunfels, fiftv miles north
of this city. One of the farmers in that
vicinity ioceutly started boring an arte-
sian well in his back yard. After going
' 160 fent without signs of waterhe
abandoned the project and removed the
framework round the holo, which was
eleven inches in diameter. From time
to time neighbors examined the well and
by this Means the holo was left uncov-
ered. One day this week the farmer's
two-year old child was playing in the
vicinity of the well and when its moth-
er came to lo k for the little felloiv he
had disappeared. Becoming alarmed
she searched the yard, and going to the
well she heard from the dark bottom
the plaintive cry of ' Papa! papa ! papal
When the woman realized the truth she
was frantic, and t inning to the field
called her husband and his helpers, The
news quickly spread among the neigh-
bors, w ho congregated to offer assistance.
At first the parents could think of no
way to rescue the child. A rope was
dropped down, but the child could not
grasp it. The cry grew fainter and
fainter, and at the end of the first six
hours a stout iron hook was lowered,
and after many fruitless attempts, oc-
cupying two days and uikhts, the dis-
tracted parents succeeded in dragging
the child to the surface, more dead than
alive. The little fellow now lies in a
very critical condition, its body fearfully
Lacerated by the hoop, and greatly ex-
hausted from its long immurement.

was assassivated Last Wednesday night.
The tragedy is inexplicable except upon`
the theory that the victim was mistaken
for another man with whom he was
talkingi‘at the time. One Chubb, re-
gistered 'as a laborer, but an object of
police attention, deliberately stepped up
to Stoddard, who was conversing with
two other citizens, and shot him in the
left oar, the ball lodging on the right
side of the head. Mr. Stoddard had no
knowledge of the assassin. The latter
ran away, but was soon arrested in an

Like so many other countries, New-

content with the local option law, which

been moving strongly for nal solute Pro•

her, a motion providing for a plebiscite

another motion -calling 'full a committee
to make thorough investigation of What
the results on, trade intercourse, etc., of
Prohibition -would- be. "Those oppog d
to Prohibition urge that the ,'people of
Newfoundland are on the whole 50 tem-

that it would cause serious deficiency of
revenue, which would need to be mot
by increased taxation on the necessaries

that trade relations with such countries
as Spain andPortngal would be seriously
endangered.

Uue might say that if tobacco were -good
