CLINTON DRIVING PARI. ASSOCIATION.
—An adjourned annual meeting of the
members of this association was held a few
evenings since, at the Rattenbury House,
when the following officers were elected :
Pres., T. C. Doherty; Vice -Pres., D Er-
win ; Sec-Treas., N. Robson : Directors,
"--Messrs Kennedy, • Copp, Rattenbury,
Johnston, Tipling, Doherty and Doan. It
• was decided not to hold a spiting meeting,
but the track will be kept in good repair,
and non -shareholders will be allowed its
use on payment of 83 a year. The inter-
ior of the course has been rented to 11r.

SUDDEN DeaTir,—We are sorry to an-
nounce the death of Mrs Henry Stevens,
which took place on Friday last. De-
ceased hasfor years been: subject to fits,
but as she invariably rallied therefrom
without much difficulty, it never entered
the minds of ber friends that one of
thesemight some day end in her death,
but such, however, was, the case. She
-was well known to our townspeople, bas-
ing resided here for many years, and was
respected by all. She was a member of
the Methodist Church, almost since her
— girlhood, and a sister of '_1lrs W. Robinson
.and Mrs L. Trouse. She leaves a family
• of two sons—both grown ep—and her
husband is the recipient of much sympathy
in his affliction.
NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE.—OPeople
who get the Daily Globe in the Western"
section of Ontario at the early hour at
which they now do, scarcely realize- the
expense that is inyolved and tbe enter-
prise displayed by the Globe Printing
Co., in order to accomplish this.. When
the Globe special train, running betweeu
Toronto and London, was started, people
.remarked they 'Won't keep it up," but
the fact that the train is chartered for" a
year, shows that they mean business.
The train carries no passengers, although
it was the pleasant privilege of the
NEW ERA to make the trip one morning
recently, and as a station is approached
a bag of Globes go flying in the direc-
tion thereof, while the train hurries along
with unabated speed. Only three stop-
pages are 'made between Toronto and
London, and the pace of the train may
be judged from the fact that the distance
is covered in 2 hours and 45 minntes. As
a result of its enterprise the circulation
of the Globe has materially increased, and
all who want the earliest news. should
add their names to its list of subscribers.

Bonus MAPLE SUGAR.—Perhaps some
people are not aware that the. Provincial
Legislature 'has stepped in to protect
those poor peeple•svbo are not thoroughly
.up in all the arts of the maple sugar man-
ufacture. According now --all
parties ofTeri}}g maple suer for sale are
compelled to abel it as ding ; and the
man or women who in future 'Bells„ sugar
at 15 cents a p nd as maple sngat which
they have purchased at 15 pounds `kir a
dollar in a grocery store, is liable to a
fine and the seizure of his goods.
OPENINGS.—Mr Robertson made an ex-
cellent display of millinery goods in his
show room opening, on Saturday night.
The stylcs°this year are most bewitching
and attractive, and in Hats embrace the
Eclipse, St. James, Eleet,wing, Geraldine
and Vivian, while in Bonnets •tlie leading
styles are Viola, Empire and Sparta ; the
opening was liberally patronized. Detlor
& Co.s made their opening on the same
night, and the store was very attractive
with the latest styles and fashions in mil-
linery goods, Beesley & Co., wbgse spe-
cialty is millinery, also made their spring
display on Saturday night, and carry, as
usual, the finest goods the market produ-
ces. The Dry Goods Palace opening is
to -morrow night.
THAT BIG (?) ESTATE.—Au exchange
says :--The Lawrence -Townley Estate As-
sociation, -bas been wound up after ex-
pending all the money subscribed by mis-
guided claimants. Eighteen months'
time has been monopolized in the search
and•considerable money spent. The net
result is the burying of the Lawrence -
Townley matter for all 'time to comes,- It
has been ascertained that there are Town•
ley estates, but the present occupant can
show a good title to them. [In this con-
nection it ma not be uninteresting to
state that one of toe parties who was em-
ployed in bunting up the claims of sup-
posed heirs to the estate, is Mr. Greer, of
Toronto, whose--•wi•fe was formerly Miss
Clark, of Goderich township, she haying
the honor to be the first girl who -was
born in that township. She has been
away therefrom for nearly 30 years.
SCOTT ACT NOTES.—The case against
Mr Bailey, of Goderich,, and also one
each against two other hotel -keepers of
Goderich, were adjourned for a few days,
owing to the absence of one of the lawyers
engaged thereon --sit couple of Seaforth
hotel -keepers, Messrs -Weir and Kennedy,
refused accommodation to Sir James Scott,
of this town, last week, because of his
professional connection with Scott Act
cases ; such petty actions will quickly
work out a different result •from what

of Seaforth, was fined $50 and costs last
Friday, for violation of the act, and cases
against Messrs Stephens and Kennedy ad-
journed. The charges against Mr Tuck,
tried last Thursday, was dismissed, and

ANONYMOUS LETTERS.—Several, if not
all the hotel keepers in town, were the
recipients this week of anonytnoui letters,'
pretending to be written in Hades, and
intimating that all who continued in the
liquor business would ultimately reach
that undesirable locality. To give greater
reality to the letters, one corner was
singed in a very suggestive manner.
Whoever wrote them was guilty of
a very foolish and senseless act, and is
deserving of severe censure. What makes
the matter annoying to others also, is tho
guessing as to their authorship, that is
indulged in, as persons are blamed for
them whom, we do not suppose, lisid"the-
sligh.test thing to do with it. No christian
would resort to such a method of express-
ing his views, and we doubt very mnch if
the average temperance adherent would,
either. Anonymous letter writing is. al-
together too prevalent,as we are informed
that even the License Inspector and Con-
st'ablo have been tho recipients of letters
threatening personal injury, it discov-
ered, the writers of all such letters are
liable to severe punishment.
