the absence of the owner, went to the

his eyes on, and led her to the slaughter
house, where she was speedily converted
into beef. The owner of the thoroughbred

A Winnipeg oorrespendeot writes :—
Five years ago last July, al d was spend-
ing a few week's holidays at Glrinmeby Damp
—one of the moat unique and interesting
Bummer resorts on Lake Ontario, with ite
special advantages for boating,driving and
spooning with old maids of a religioue turn
of mind—I received a hitter from Winni-
peg, and thereby hangs a strange tale,
which I shall endeavor to tell your readers
in this and other letter s. It was writteu
by a wise, cautious, urthodox young
Sootehman whom I lead known in °uteric
for many years, and in awhose judgment
in money matters I had the utmost coufi
dente, so much so that I offered him all
my available meana to invest for me as he
thought best. Commencing with nothing
but it good head and wllhng hands on his
arrival in Canada, he had accumulated
several thousand dollars, and came to
Manitoba in the spring of 1881 to get free•
grant farina for himself and his brother,
whiea was the height of hie ambition thee.
The, great real eat leucite wets 'Seat star t-
ing in earnest on his arrival here, but he
touts no stock in it until ho had taut nick
and tired waiting a whole month for' tho
Land Office to give him the homestead
he wauted, and, having decided to return
home iu disgust, he thought lie might as
well try and speculate a Little so as to make
the expense of his trip, if nothing mote.
To his surprise he cleared $500 on tho first
deal in three days and $5,003 in the next
few weeks. It was then that he wrote me,
through the kindness of his heart wishing
me to share his gond fortune, and said
that if I would only come up here with
my business ability nail capital, as he put
it, I would make $25,000 in six menthe
No,', if any other person in the world had
written to Mein' such extravagafit-terms T
would have regarded it as a huge joke, but,
coming from the man I had the most iin-
plieit faith in, I half believed it, and wrote
at once to tate wholesale house in Montreal
that I represented on the road to cancel
my engagement, (at $1,500 a year).....e.nd let
'me go. The very next day it so happened
th;ttaloug,dulightful letter appeared in the
Globe, purporting to have been written by
a lady in Winnipeg, and giving a racy, at-
tractive description of the Prairie City of
the West, its wonderful progress and
everything else about- it. That settled
the matter, and I left fur Toronto on the
next train, in order to get. ready in ,time
to take the same boat up the- lakes, as the
Marquis of Lorne was going on, who was
to start in a day or two ou his fatuous
journey across the western plains. On
-arriving hi Toronto that -night everybody
was talking of the Northwest and the rapid
.fortunes to be made in it, and the very air
was full of all sorts of reports about lucky
fellows 'who had made their "pile" specu-
lating here, in no ,time. The brat man I
met that knew me, as I walked up Yonge
street, ran towards me.and said excitedly
that he was going to start to -morrow for
Winnipeg and wished me to go along with
him. A friend of his who could not write
his own name bad made over $100,000 in
three months hero. t told him I should
want a good deal 'more than even that
handsome amount if I had to put a cross
on my signature every time, but that I
had the fever very badly too and intended
to go. He made about $20,000 herein a
very short time; but two years afte'i'warde
I had to give him $100 to.nu'y him a suit
of clothes and a second-class ticket to take
him home. My old friend ,who wrote for
me fared still worse. He made $32.000 in
hard Dash—and I saw him make $5000 in
one day in lees than two hours—but some
time, ago I paid his way to Kansas City,
where'he is working far $75 a month now,
and glad to• get it. I -could -nems• scores -
of similar cases, but .one more will suffice,
as the preachers say. At the Courts of
. Revision here last spring 1 asked an old
-Hibernian who wanted hiesassessinent -re•
'luted where his property was situated.
v b fewrapid
He gave his.atub y clay pipe a
polls..and _said .. he•-didn-''te-know-;. it- was -
somewhere in the woods across the river,
but he could not find it! He then in-
formed me that he had'corde here in 1$81
without a ceut, but after working for wages
a few months ho tried his hand at tile'
boom, and inside of one year had $11,000
in the bank. I asked him what he did
with it, and it is for his characteristic an-
awer that I refer to him. "Sure, and I
dumped it out on the prairie!" with a
light, indifferent air, as if it had been_ an
old shoe that be had thrown away. He
lives in a shanty now and saws wood.
But who could deseeibe the Winnipeg boom
in all its glory ? In this northwest part of
the American continent; where booms in
real estate are common in every new town
and city, it Was simply phenomenal iu its
magnitude, intensity and spdden collapse,
as well as in its disastrous results.

The Agricultural Members of the House
• Favoring Union.
The agricultural members of the Local
House, held a meeting in Toronto, last
Friday, to consider matters pertaining to
the farming iutereat. •
Mr Gibson (Huron) spoke strongly in
favoetof union among farmers, and said
that the farmers -had themselves to blame
if they were not properly represented.
Mr Cruces said that in the Grange to
which lie belonged they held open meet-
ings and discussed matters of common in-
tereatto them,and much good'had resulted
from these gatherings. Latterly there
had been a greater tendency to elect far-
mers to the House, and this would benefit
the country.
Mr Wilmot said that the' farmer mem-
bers of the House, irrespective of party,
should unite on all questious affecting their
interests.
The Chairman laid that in the past the
brightest sons of farmers had gono into
the professions, leaving the Moro poorly
educated boys at home, but it required.
education to make a good farmer. They
should strive to make farming it more at-
tractive business and keep the boys at
home. He advised tho farmers to or•
ganize and consider matters affecting their
interests. He would not go so far, as to
adviae farmer members voting solid, but
ho believed they should consider their in-
terests, which had bean sacrificed in past
legiellt tion. He suggested that . the far-
werli in the $ones 8bould form a plub and
meet twice a weekuntil the session is caroled.
Mr. Bowden, of Kingston, approved of
this suggestion.
Mr, Drury said that When the Grange
was organized 'he joi.nedand acted' with it
i4 order to get concerted action for the
promotion of agricultural interests,.
Though he would continue to work with
the Grange, he could not shut• his eyes to
the fact that their organization had been
to a great extent a failure. '('hero Was an
agitation against prison labor where it
affected workingmen; aud the qnestion
was speedily dealt with by the Govern-
ment, This was the effect of union.
If the farmers were united they would
be more attentively listened to, and he
would do all in his power to assist them
in organising. No part in the community
received leas financial assistance than the
farmers. Yet if farmers kept accounts
they would find that after giving them-
selves a living they did not realize two
per cent.• of the capital they invested.
This was a s!atc of things which care1
for inquiry and action:
The meeting adjourned, to meet'at the
call of the chairman.

One of the delightful days of last

driven aro Ind to make a congratulatory
call ui,on a young married lady friend,
who was happily conyalescing from that
occasional sacred event in ' the lives of
married ladies, which, far from being
sickness, is the pet•feet culmination of
their health. She was shown into the
pallor, and for the few minutes required
to arrange for the reception into that
room where mother and child were do-
ing as well as coulcl be expected, was
left with no other to entertain her than
the only son and heir of the house, Mas-
ter Charles, then in his foul th year.
But .Charlie was ,fully equal to the ocean•
and premises to grow up into an erne•
mentofsociety that will never be abashed
by beauty, however brilliant, into the
painful negative of ' no conversation.'
After some unessential preliminary re-
marks,Master Charles approached nearer
tlie visitor and lowering bis tone into
confidential, asked :—
Miss—, oo dot a baby 1'
The young lady gave enc swift glance
around to assure herself there was no
other "hearer of this pertinent question,
and replied :-- -
No, Clfarlie, dear; I have not.'
And did 06 never have a baby;('
Iu (spite of the youth of her eager in-

That young lady seized that little boy
by his two shoulders, and leaning over so
as to look full into his eyea age said, with
an impressiveness lent by isudden terror :
' See, here, Charlie,listen'fo me. I don't
want any baby yet, and if you ever say
anything about it to your papa I'll never
like you any more at all, at all—never,
never, never. Now, will you promise?'
Well, if oo don't want a baby I won't
