DIFFICULTIES TO OVERCOME.—Com-
plaint is sometimes heard that efforts are
not made to enforce the Scott Act, and
officers of the law are blamed (but unjustly
so) for, being derelict in their duty. As
an evidence of the difficulties to be over-
come, we quote the following circum-
stance, which is strictly true in every par-
ticular. Inspector Paisley worked up a
couple of cases of violation of the law, et
Wingham, and found that they were such
that a conviction would assuredly follow
on the evidence be had. Wishing to lay
information in order that he might pro-
ceed to trial,he went to no less than egiht
magistrates in the neighborhood, but each
and everyone point blank refused to re-
ceive an information, notwithstanding the
fact that some of them proles to be in
sympathy with the Act. He had no al-
ternative, under the circumstances, but to
drop the cases for a time, and report the
nonperformance of duty on the part of
neral of his brother-in-law, Thos. Whale,
of Peel township, "Charlie Howson left
Loudon for Regina,yesterday, taking with
him two car loads of horses and buggies.
Mr, L. Appleton, of the -Molsons Bank,
has been promoted to Torouto. A debate
on "Falling Away," between Rev. John
Gray and Mr 4 Sims, took place in the
town hall, on Wednesday night; the hall
was jammed full, and many who wanted
to could not gct in. The mayor occupied
the chair, and both gentlemen upheld
their respective views in three half-hour
speeches each, and 15 minutes more to
close ; a good deal of interest was taken
in the debate, but no publiejudgnient was
given thereon, theaudience been expected
to form their own conclusions.— Messrs.
Forrester, Macmurchie andManning went
to Woodstock yesterday, to look after She
interests of Clinton, at the C. P. R. meet-
ing held in that place. The bons° and
lot on Princess St., occupied by Mr. For-
tune,was sold by T M Carling,auctioneer,
these magistrates to the Attorney -General, on Thursday, Mr Jas Moore being the
which he has done. purchases. .
