'J'o the Editor of the Clinton Neto Era, MR, F,DIToi,—Raving been assailed in the issue of your paper, of the 40. ipst., by one who signs )himself Villager, you will favor me by publishing the following :— I have taught in the,.achool of section No. S, Hallett, for the past fifteen years, and have now eutered upon my sixteen year in the same achool, and during all my time of service hero I have never known of a complaint lodged against ine by any one to any truetoo of this S.S. This statement I dare Villager or any- one else to contradict. But supposing I am what Villager represents me to be, viz,—a poor mould, Ike. Has he no other redress than to slander me in the columns of a newspaper ? Is that the only resource previded for Villager? Why 1 He has the trustees and if they 4o not give him satisfaction, he has the Inspector, the Minister of Education, and the Courts of Law to which he can appeal. Bat )Villager tto doebt thinks that these methodstere im- ¢ 1 proper methods of dealing with a poor mould. And why ? Because they would not bo likely tojege, pseleresisesessensessraudelie eaye-'ka-weats. " the worth of his money overytime. We are told by one who differed very much in cbarac. ter from Villager, and• este whom we should imitate, `that "whosoever shall smite the one the right cheek turn . to, 1491 tele otherlals.o." - Now Vi1lagFr I would say $o you, fire away, pile on your dirt. But be assured, the more yon work in the dirt,.tho more yow shall get tiJiatueared by it. At a meeting of the board of trustees of this S.S., held in the school house, Feb 10th., all the members present, the following resole. Con was unanimously adopted for publication. Moved by James McConnell, and sec. by John Johnston, that having learned that the abili- ties of our teacher have been assailed by one who signs himself Villager, iu the Clinton New ERA, under the date of the 4th inst., we, the trustees of this S. S. do hereby con• deme► Villager's, statements as being base and cowardly, contemptible and malicious. And we further ad'If that if we can find out the propQr, name of Villager, that we shall assist in dealing with him as the law directs, and -as he justly deserves. MR. EpITor.,—I have beard that I was ac- cused by some for aiding in writing those let- ters over the signature of .Resident, which have lately been published in your papeb. I emphatically deny the accusation. I never wrote a word nor I never dictated a word to bewritten in any of the letters referred to. Now in conclusion, I wish to inform Villagdr, ._thatLdo not wish -nor will .I put .myself to the trouble toreply (unless forded upon me) to any more of his base 'illiterate trash I am yours, TEACHER os. S.S. No..8, Hullett. .A TbMELY CALL. To the Editor of the Clinton New Era. BIR,—flease let me toll the electors of East, West and South Huron to remember Tuesday, the 22nd inst,, and to get up early, go everyman to the polls and vote to turn out the rascals at Ottawa, For the love you bear to ,your country. For the love you bear to yourselves For the love yon bear to your children and your children's children, do not forget to be early at the polls to vote for Ed- ward Blake, his party and good government. This.isthe last appeal I will ever make to you' in this cause, now or never save your country from destruction. • IRementber yonr.taxes 821 a minute, and ever, day (under present rule) getting worse. Front the Globe. `xrrhe uodrihatione for the Do.tniuion Elec- tions occurred on Tuesday, The results can only bo described as' snaking 'Victory certain for the Liberals if a week of solid, earnest work be put: iu. „Thee -following constituencies were carried by acclamation :— In Ontstio, none. In the Maritime Province, none, ' In British Columbia, one, Yale, by an Independent. . In Manitoba, one, Lisgar, by Mr. Rose, . who calla himself 'as Independent; though he often supports the Government. `In Quebec, FIVE, all by gentlemen op• G posing the overnment. In_additlon, to the acclamations, there are ,two seats. iu which no Conservative candidate is running. One of these is ' South Hnron. The other is Montreal West where. the candidates are kr. IC. Ward,. Lib., and gir. Donald Smith; Ind. The latter has declared that he stands as an absnlutIy unpledged c odidate, and on the' tariff question he hal; expressed' views al- most identical with those held by Mr.Blake. Consequently, Montreal West must be counted as lost to the Government. •. The situation therefore stands as follow; ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION Alineterialiet, NONE Independent. Mara, i'slc. Rose, Lisgar. Opposition. Coursol:;-Montreal Ci''est.. - Daudet, Nicole t. Gigan1t, Rnut•ille, `driver, Huntingdon, Dupont, Bagnt. No toty candidates in South Huron, \Vest -.Montreal. Contrtist this with what happened in 1832 In t'llat election the Torics carried uo less than tt*enty-fiesa_seltts by - acchrt satirist, isgainst—one carried by the Liberals. The 'Tories also had no opposition in 'fiveorSix of their seats. So .that at 'thy corres- ponding time to this the Tories had in 1882 actually earritid 30 seats and the Liberals ------true—Whereas, now, the Opposition have eevensea' s,L deptn.lentstwo, and the Tories nothing. A Quebec telegram in the Montreal Witness, says :—The oornpeign in this dis- trict has now reached the red hot stage. Scarcely anything but politics, parties and ,candidates are talked of and all the con- atituencies of the district will be deluged with floods of eloquence to morrow. A. porfec,t army of stump -speakers have lett the city for the different parishes. In Quebec \Vest, the only city division in which the fight is really serious the means used by the Government candidate, Mc- preovy, to save himself from defeat, ere positive disgrace toehecountry. in addi- tion to gagging the whole of the Englith press of the city every Government otiieinl in the place who can be utilized as a can- vasser or a bribery agent, 'has taken the field in his favor ; even Armory mon from the Citadel are doing this kind of wnrk, and no stone is bei g left unturned to win the leotion. The , corruption is open and shamoloss and the Opposition are already in possession of upwr(rda of tifty oases of the most flagrant character. Still the Opposi- tion count on carry ing the seat by a good majority. The Quebec Local I,VIinietera were all re. elected by acciamatiou on Saturday. The bookkeeper in McMillan'tt mill at Winnipeg, was rnurdored on Saturday night. The Globo, in its Political notes, sayc`— A man named Harley, who is perambulat- ing East Huron,. will stand watching. During a political meeting atTine Valley, .Prince Edward Island, Friday night the building in which it was held fell in. There were about 300 people, inside but none sustained fatal injuries. A number of men had their shoulders dislocated, and many received'severe injuries. In;;Ottawa at the present moment there 'are hundreds of families almost on the brinkof starvation This is no idle etatinent in evidence of .which we may (mute the following remarks Made by the sermon at the Basilica hero last evening, ".There are many families in Ottawa at the peesent `time op the brink of destitution who are VV unable ty obtain work.. We also know of widowed mothers with families in this city who go to bed at night cold and hungry po and who have no idea how they aro vivo to obtain their breakfast." „The detnnr'dccl^• upon the charitable institutions of. this city to relieve the, sufferings of the -anent- , ployed and destitute were never greater, ' ;w RE AT • At Belleville, as in Kingston, the Rev. dames Robertson, Superintendent of the Presbyterian 'Missions in the Northwest, in the strongest possible terms accused the Dominion Government of the most. callous and cruel neglect of the Indians - in tho Northwest.
