Dublin, Sep, 29.—One of the Most
daring outrages ever committed in Ire-
land is reported frornNevr paitas. At
o'eleck this morning the inhabitants
of the village and in the surrounding
distriet of the comas, of Limerick
were startled frena their sleep by an
.explosien which shook the houses and,
shattered the. windows- The people
rushed out to find that an attempt had
been made to blow up a large hostile
in which were sleeping Captain Lloyd,
a•number of emergency men, and ten
policemen. &harrei containing up-
wards of dirty pounds of gunpowder
had exploded tattier die portion of the
house where it 'visas supposed Captitin
Lloyd wa ephg,at he had cur-
iously enough :only that eight changed
his room to another part of the build-
•ing, an so escaped a most cestain
death Some of the inmates bad mir-
aculous escapes. The back walls and
doors were,00mpletely demolished, and
the entire, building was shattered.
The greatest care and skill had been
displayed ira placing the explosive in
the most advantageoaa place for doing,
its work a destruction. 'Elemnauts. of
the barrel and a portion of the fuse
were found after the explosion. The
house was built and ferwerly occupied
by a matt named Hiekey„, who
made •some money in. America.
He recently had a- dispute with the
landlord, the notorious Col. Lloyd Ap-
John, and this resulted in his eviction
a few eweeks ago, Capt. Lloyd acts as
agent for his cousinr. Mr. .ApJohn, and
!he went to occupy the house under
police protection. No arrests have
been made.

All persons who addresa us on the
aukiect of smut, ask for the remedy or
remedies, end this is .a part of the sub-
ject very difficult to treat. The smut
plant is 80 small in its beginnings and
also so rapid ,in its growth, that its
presence is not known upon the grai1?
until its destructive work is done. If
the smut enters the plant from spores
which clinebto, find are sown With the
grain, it is to be expected that a • thor-
.ough cleaning of the grain would be a
proper precautioe. The application of
any substance that wouls1 kiil the spores
and not injure the grain, naturally
suggosts itself. The walking Of the
grain in a solution of sulphate of cop-
per (blue vitirol,) followed by an ap-
plication oflinte has proved:4A value.
preeautiouary measures oft1is nature
are all, that seem to be within the
reach of the farmer. • If, the spores
VIII be kept from getting at the grow-
ing grain, the smut will not appear.
With corn the best way to rid the field
of smut is to pass through it and gather
and burn ail the effected ears and,
stalks. In this way the many n01110/16
of spores are kept from beiug spread
and continuing' the peSt. With the ,
smaller ;grains, as well' as wheat and
oats, this. method though it is the
,
moat effective would probably be im-
practicable. Tough the remedy is not
easy .of application, it is a stop forward
in the work, to know the exact nature
of the trouble, and about tl,is there is
now no doubt. Smut is a small para-
