Ball on Friday evening last, was a

conferred on him no doubt, in recog-
eitiou sof his past publio services but
it showed that the Queen recognized

never disgrace it.
He would now speak on the harbor
question, something which would be of
more interest to his hearers. . It was
a harbor of refuge and lie'e as ,happy
to say that it was he who. -first recom-
mez ded the construction of , a Govern-
ment Harbor et G.odericli. When he
did . so, he had two objectshe view. -
of becoming better. acquainted with • first, he wished to establish a harbor of
the thorough working of that branch refuge at Goderich, in the interest of
mariners and ship -holders, and in the
second place, he .was anxious to show
that he was not a man 'bound up
one Province, but took an interest in
the Dominior, at large, Altlloufth of
French extraction he was a British
subject and a minister . of the crown,
`and was at all dines determined to, act
in the interest of the whole, without
regard to -nationality and location.
No doubt many tb-day listening to
hint were opposed to him politically,
but it was possible for political opel
ponents to be friends personally. Willi
regard: to the harbor,' he: could give:
them no definite answer at present
he had notyet inspected it, but if le

eer'that necessary repairs and improve-
ments should be made, they would at
once be attended to and an appropria-

for carrying outyour original intention
