A THRILLING ADVENTiJRE..
TWO BOYS CARRIED DOWN THE NIAGARA
RIVER TOWARDS THE FALLS.,—SAVED.
AT THE ELEVENTH IIOULt.
BUFFALO, May 5.—Eddie Davison,
a lad livilrg ori Mohawk street, .son of..a.
ship -owner alit1 1 3ompanion went .row-
ing on the Niagara river at black Rock
on Sunday. The boat got caught in
the ice and drifted down the river
nearer and nearer the, falls. They
floated until darkness overtook then,.
They could hear the roar of the: ter-
rible cataract, and despite their clesper-.
ate efforts the boat drifted on. They
finally resolved to use their efforts in
forcing the boat towards the American
shore, regardless of the ice jam. Rain
fell to add misery to the darkness, and"
at one time they give up, and tears
filled their eyes. This but acted as an
escape valve to their pent-up fear, and
they again took hold of the oars and
pulled the'3oat through the floes more
vigorously than before.. Finally, as
the roar of the fall came nearer and
nearer, their boat grounded, but in the
thick darkness the boys liarcily believed
they were ashore, and •werl not cou-
vinced until they had driven the boat
half out on dry land. It was late, .no
lights were to be seen, and they made
a shelter of the upturned boat. On.
Monday morning they found them-
selves below Lasalle. After vainly
trying to row the boat up stream they
gave it up, hoofed it to Tonawanda,
and came on by,. train to gladden two
disturbed households.

The continued weakness of Russian
bonds is traceable to the effects of the
Czar's murder and serious fears of a
revolution in Russia.
AGITATION IN THE BALTIC PROVINCES.
• Berlin advices state that there is
much agitation in the Baltic. provinces"
of Russia among the ,;,easants, who de-
sire absolute ownership of the land
now had- on lease2_-T'i'e`-Zutheran
» .scorn in many parts of Esthonia leave
refused to administer the oath of al-
legiance to the Czar, or did so with
manifest rt luctance. The Dorpat press
freely expresses the opinion that the
Government is incapable of lontribut-
ing to the prosperity of the country,
and regrets that the former advocates
of separation left no worthy successor,
Handbills have been distributed at
Dorpat calling upon the -ialiabitants
of the Baltic provinces not. to swear al -
'e a :ce until the Czar has granted
thein laws and lance ri;hte equal to
those possessed by the Russian people.
It urges the people to remain united,
but to refrain front' open rebellion. .A
manifesto circulated at Vindau, Cour
land, says :_" Let the • people refuse
to swaer al:e,'ancs to the Czar before
Russian oflieials, and only swear before
the local officials. We .cannot longer
be deceived like dogs. We must re-
main firm. We despise and dertounoe
the nobility, that they, may disappear
from Esthonia like the snow in spring.
Whoever tears down this notice risks
his life." The above documents are
composed in the local dialects, presum-
ably by the peasants.

Owen Sound, May 5.—Last week a
gentleman of rather questionable des.

Crpsoe apparel, arrived in town, pur-
porting to be a Mr. Hood, a cattle
dealer of Guelph, He called on several
of our leading butchers, and informed
them • that that he had eighty-four head
of cattle on the road coming into town,
and from whom he managed to borrow,
owing. to the banks being closed; differ-
ent sums, ranging from one dollar and,
fifty cents clown. He 'then interview-
ed the proprieter of the City Hotel,
with whom be arranged to have a yard
fenced off and hay put in troughs to
feed the tattle, after wbich he made
his customary loan from the proprietor,,
which in this case was fifty cents.
Towards evening, when .the Horned
bovinefailed to arrive, one of the
dollar and a half victims went in
search of liis man, and • finding him at
one of the hotels slightly the worse of
liquor, lead Mot apprehended. Thos.
Scott, Esq., J. P.,. remanded him for
seven days, to allow him to straighten'
up. This morning Mr, Hood appear-
ed before Mr. Geo. Spencer, Police
Magistrate, who,. after hearing the evi-
deuce of the deluded, warned the but-
chers to steer clear of such characters
in the future. The bovine dealer was

MORE REPRESSIVE MEASURES.
it is intended to abolish public exe•
cutiotis in Russia. A man has been
arrested for posting revolutionary pro.
demotions, appealing to the workmen
in the railway workshops. The gover-
nor of Moscow has increased the stria•
gency of the regulations relative to
liuuseporters, tb prevent lodgers from
harbouring persons without the know-
ledge of the police. •
ADMINISTRATIVE. C!IANOES.,
A. St. Petersburg correspondent
says :—An im.portant•11linisterial Coun
til, held on Tuesday, unanimously de-
cided in favour of unity of administra-
tion, which. involves Ministerial. res-
ponsibtlity, to be secured by confereri-
ces of the Ministers, ur der the presif
dency of one of their number. The
Czar offered Gen. Melikoff this presi-
dency, and doubtless he will accept it,
The question of a convocation of de-
puties stands over, but only for a
Klement. The danger of the adoption
of a policy of increased repression is no
longer formidable
