EAST -NORTHUMBERLAND.
THE election for the House of Com-
mons for East Northumberland came
off on Friday last, and resulted in the
return of Mr, •Grouter, b,y 174 of a
majority. The Opposition since that
Mime have\been jubilant, claiming that
€he result is a direct condemnation of
the Syndicate bergain. The election
was 'a personal one. --not a political
one. Mr. ICennedy was an Irish Ro-
man Catholic,'and 111r. °router was a
Protestant and au Orangeman, From
the time of Mr, Kennedy's nomination,
the sectarion cry was raised and kept
up, evidently witie effect, until the,.
poll was .closed. A.• circular was even
addressed to the ladies, asking their
influence against Mr. Kennedy, and
charging flim with some serious offen-
ces, In fact, the. Reform party are
always in sympathywith. the Roman
Catholics, untiloneof them is the
Conservative'Canclidate, and then it is
wrong to support him,
