BIZARRE ANSWERS TO A YEAR T() Go
Recently 1 wrote a CO11In111 on the subject of what the incl.
ividual would do if he or she had one year to live, I asked for
suggestions from readers and have received quite a few.
Perhaps the most interesting ideas came from a Grade 9
class. Their teacher had suggested my topic and asked then' to
write an essay on it, The results were revealing, touching in some
cases, rather horrifying in others. I'll give you a sampling, repro•
duces just as they were written, grammar and spelling intact.
In most cases, the boys were brief and pungent. The girls
tended to write what the teacher might think was worthy, with a few
notable exceptions, They waxed romantic and dramatic. The boys
were blunt and honest.
Grace: "About a month before I was to die I would go to
church every day talking to God and then later to a priest."
Lynn: "If I had one year to live I would quit school, leave
home and go live with my brother in Montreal, When I died well
I guess I die."
Debbie: "I would quit school and . . . go to Las Vegas
because my mother and father . . . said it is the hest place to go
if you want to win money, After I go there 1 ant going to go all
over the world, Then I will go to the hospital and just wait until
I DIE. But f will have a wonderful time before I go. THE END,"
Obviously a hedonist.
Cindy: "The first thing I would quit school because what's
the use of getting an education if you don't have time to use it,"
Good thinking, Cindy.
Barb: "I would quit school leave home and take lots of
money, Then I would travel all over by my thumb. Have cops
after me and get all kinds of trouble . . .A
Susan would smoke in front of her parents and come and
go as she pleased with no housework or baby-sitting to do "and
probably get anything I wanted, especially from my dad."
Bonnie: "1 would like to leave home & go with a motor-
cycle gang for a year . . , have cops after me all the time and
getting in lots of trouble. And about one month before I was to
die I would try to take a trip on speed and see what it really did,
And just live in freedom."
Tom: "I would borrowing 5,000 and make a formula to
blow up the world just before 1 died I would blow up the world."
That's one way out, Torn.
Jim: "I would like to turn 18 and quit school, start drink-
ing, get my drivers license and start working." There's a comb -
'nation,
Tom: 1 would get leave of school and hum it all the way,
And by a snowmohle and a bigger boat,"
Frank: "I would go to banks and borrow 20,000 and go have
some fun, First I would go and steal a car and smash it up. I
would buy a lot of tool and give it to Care, I would go to Toronto
and steal a bunch of junk and sell it to somebody. I would get
into fights. I would burn down the schools and factors." There's
a nice, wholesome kid,
Steve: "First I would quit school. Then since I'm 18 go
out and get stoned (bloody maries), After about a week recovery
I'd buy a .303 and shoot Prisedent Nixon (good). Then I'll go to
the electric chair and go the fast way,"
Jim: "I would want to go all over the world with my wife
also I would write a will leaving everything to my wife and would
donate my eyes to a blind person." He must have a girl friend.
Mike: "I would like to drink, eat and live it up (have
stag Parties, boose, lot of girls, food and money.) About a month
before I die will grange my funeral."
As I said, just a sample, but it makes you think. I've used
only bits, but there's a pattern, About 80 per cent would leave
school at once. About 50 per cent would leave home. About 90
per cent would travel around the world. About GO per cent think
bank managers are philanthropists. About 20 per cent are ideal-
istic, the rest materialistic.
Rather frightening what?

WHAT'S NEW AT HURONVEW •--
The Chrisian Women's Club at South Huron provided a
song service for the residents on Sunday evening. There were vocal
duet numbers by Cecilia and Cathy Hall, a reading by Mrs. Rus-
sell Erratt and group singing led by Mrs, Luther. The folks at
Huronview are counting on a visit from the Women's Club on the
second Sunday evening of each month.
Nine tables of games were played in the auditorium on
Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Johnston had high score for the ladies
and Mark Sproat was high man, Consolation prize winners were
Norma Muir and John Rivett.
Mr, and Mrs. Jim Lawrie of Blyth arranged the musical
entertainment and showed slides of part of their recent trip to
England and Scotland at the Family Night program. A group of
junior square dancers Christine Chalmers, Karen Young, Charlene
Campbell, Jean Siertsema, Tommy Duttman, Dennis Knox, James
Wharton and Nelson Caldwell danced two changes and a family
musical trio Hugh Wharton, his son James and daughter Mrs.
Peter Brommer provided several musical numbers. Mr. Lawrie
led a group sing song and has agreed to show the rest of his pic-
tures at a later date. Mrs, Cartwright, a native of Blyth, expressed
the appreciation of the residents for the enjoyable evening,

FROM THE MINISTER'S STUDY ---
Did you ever bear the story of the Christian who arrived at
the famous Pearly Gates and was met by St. Peter, who informed
him that one needed 2000 points to enter?
Playing with the keys, St, Peter said, "Tell me about your-
self."
"Well," said the Christian, "first I was Baptized, then I was
Confirmed, and 1 always attended Church regularly on Sundays,
just like it says In the regulations."
"Good," responded St. Peter, "one point. Anything else?"
"Oh yes," certainly, the Christian answered, "I served on my
Parish Board for almost ten years, and hardly ever missed a meet-
ing."
"Fine," said St, Peter, "one more point. Anything else?"
The Christian, beginning to tire, asked, "Does being Treas-
urer for all those years count for anything?"
"Of course," said St. Peter, "that's excellent. We'll add
one more point. You now have three altogether. Anything else?"
"Well, at this rate," answered the exasperated Christian,
"nothing will get me into heaven but the Grace of God,"
"Ahhh 11 At last," said St. Peter. "Yes, that makes up for
every single point you need. You now have 2000 points; come right
on in; and welcome home,"

THE BLYTH ATARD — WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13th, 1971
On October 2Ist. ►pore than four million Ontario citizens will select,
front among themsclvcs,117 people to represent them. And, at the sante
time, they will select one man as their Premier.
Bill Davis has said to the people of Ontario: "You have no aced
to judge us on our promises, We are asking you to support us for our
performance...for the decisions we have made. lur the policies we have
introduced, for the more than 130 items of legislation we have imple-
m=nted:'
Consider that record.
The establishment ofa Department of the Environment, and assis-
lance to firms investing in pollution control equipment. The banning
oflogging tit Quetico and Killarney Provincial Parks. Summer employ-
ment for students in clean-up operations (Project S\VIEIT). The Endan-
gered Species Act, A tougher line with corporate polluters. With clear
decisions and vigorous action like this, Ontario can brea the a little easier.
The Davis government's decision to halt the Spadina Expressway,
coupled with a pledge to provide greatly expanded assistance to mass
public transit, has brought us closer to a rational solution of our trans-
portation problems,
Tie Provincial conference on economic Lind cultural nationalism
this
reflects and also contributes to an eypandin`! awareness Mlle potential
of our country and our people.
Davis decisions have helped the Canadian publishing industry;
special previsions have been written into Ontario Development Cor-
poration loans to encnura.!e Canadian ell'ort, lo preserve and enhance
what is di'linCtiye a1)0111 our sociel\.
And there have been a great many other Davis government deci-
sions...tioud decisions: No-fault car insurance.'l'he task force for off-
track betting. Expanded grants to day-care centres. Detoxification
centres. Expanded housing 011 a rent -neared -to -income basis. Free
mediae: for the needy. and fur people hi and over, And lowering
the ago of majority,
Which brines us back to your decision. at the ballot box.
l -or democracy to succeed, it's not enough to talk about change.
Change must he made to happen.'fhat's ‘vhN Hill Davis is doing things.
And doing things -for people—is surely Muit leadership is all about.
En his first seven months as Premier. 13i11 Davis has demonstrated
the kind of leadership and government Ontario needs. With your sup-
port on October 21st, he will continue.
He can do notch more.
s.. Davis is doing things...for people,
On October2PWo something for Ontario.,,Support Bill Davis.
