Police Chief Jim Warwick has asked the Standard to warn local residents to be on the lookout for animals who seem to be acting strangely, and in particular pan ents should warn children not to come in contact with stray eats or clogs. Jim destroyed the first of the five eats on Tuesday, August 6th and it was the only one of the group that was found to have the disease. However, this Is proof enough that rabies is in evidence in the area. Free clinics Are being held this week in the area for the innocula• tion of dogs and cats and perhaps it would be a wise move to take your pct to one of them, An ad- vertisement in this issue tells of dates, locations and times. I11,Y'l'11, ONTARIO •— WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27th, 1969 Blyth Firemen Busy During Past Weeks But Damage Kept To A Minimum Members of the Blyth Fire 13ri• gale have been fairly active dur- ing the past two weeks that the Standard has been on holidays. The fellows answered a call to the home of Mr. and Mrs, Jack Lee in Londesboro When aid was sought to help extinguish a fire in the Lee's refrigerator. Quick action had the blaze under con trot before firemen arrived. On the same day, and in fact the fire truck was waylaid on its trip back from Londesboro, the brigade answered a call to the farm of Mr, and Mrs. Maurice Bean. flay in the barn became overheated and caused consider- able concern. Firemen and neigh- bours forked large amounts of the hay front the ,building and soaked it will water. Fortunately no damage occurred to the build- ing. On Monday of this week firemen answered a call for assistance from Wingham firefighters and travelled to the farm of George E. Cowan on the third line of Morris Township about a mile and a quarter from the Brussels highway. A light bulb coming in contact with straw in the mow caused the fire and only quick action by 16 year-old Kenneth Cowan, son of the owner and bis 11 year old cousin Kathleen, from Chatham, prevented a disastrous fire in the lame I -shaped barn. The Wingham fire truck is out of operation due to motor trouble and the call was made to Blyth for help when it was felt the Wingham tank truck would not be adequate if the fire broke out again. When Blyth arrived, wat• er was soaked on the straw mow. On Tuesday afternoon the bri- gade was called to Morris Town- ship again to answer a call to the farm of Adolph Van Pouche. A fire in a field on the premises caused little damage. The Blyth Fire Department is advertising fire extinguishers in The Standard this week and area harvesters would be well advised to consider their offer, particular• ly when it has been such a dry season. Pullen, Agricultural Repro• sentativc for Huron County) • Cereal grain harvest is practi• catty completed in south Ituron with about' 10%'enraining in - the north. While some forage after- math has been taken for hay or pasture, it would appear that a, substantial acreage will not be utilized. As a result of hot, dry weather white beans are ripening quickly although observations would in- dicate that pods and seeds per plant are below average in some fields, Rain is needed for maximum :;rowth of corn and pasture. THE KIDS ARE PATHETIC it's been a rough summer for a lot of people, including yours truly There's nothing like getting home, exhausted, after a trip and finding a) that your wife has lost the house key and you have to break in through a cellar window, and b) that an oak limb 40 feet long and ten inches thick has fallen across your hydro lines during a storm. However, these are minor things. 1 got into the house with no more than a scraped knee and a bad temper, and a good neighbour had climbed up and sawed the limb in two, allowing half of it to crash down on my fence. But this Is a mere bagatelle compared to what others have gone through. Teachers are supposed to recharge their batteries during the summer vacation, and hit school in September tanned,. fit. and bursting with idealism. We'll be lucky to open this fall, the way our staff is fold• ing up. A hernia and a heart attack, a total collapse from exhaust• ion, various slipped discs and other ailments have decimated the anks. all I have is a touch of heartburn, and 1 attribute that to a couple of Bloody Marys for breakfast, served by friends we were visiting. It's been a bad summer for a lot of parents. First, two kids I met on a visit to the old home town, told me nonchalantly that they'd flunked their first year at College. Their parents weren't quite so nonchalant. Apoplectic is the word. Same day I met an old fiend who was at his cottage. They'd '.eft one son at home, working. The night before, my friend had re• ceived a call from the police in his home town. They had raided a big teenage party, At his place. A friend of my daughter, a pretty, blonde 17 -year-old, had a stroke and her right side is paralyzed. No need to ask how her family feels. A distraught mother told me three weeks ago that her 14. year-old daughter had disappeared, run off with another kid. She phoned home collect from Vancouver, Alive, but who knows what she's been doing? The lady is a good mother, in every way. Has two daughters, one a fine, steady girl, the other a young rip. Why? And everywhere you see them on the highways, dirty, beard• ed, long-haired. Hitch -hiking from nowhere 10 nowhere. Some of them cluster in "communes" in the big cities. A commune is usually a falling -down house in a slum area. It has a kitchen of sorts, a toilet that works occasionally, and the rest of the floor space. is covered by mattresses• and. sleepingabags, Theoretically, everyone contributes for food, rent and chores. In reality, there are usually two or three working and the rest just drift in and out like alley cats, This produces personality clashes and hassles and a very unhealthy psychological atmosphere, Add drugs to this boar's nest and you have 'some 'pretty sick young people, They claim they're opting out of a sick society. Work is u dirty word. They are meditating, seeking a higher spiritual life There's a lot of talk about vibrations and Buddah and pure love for everyone. All. this in a fpig•pen? The young people are rather pathetic, but i grieve more for their parents, who simply don't - know how to cope with a way of thinking and living so alien to their own. They are loving, frustrated and helpless, And I save a little pity for myself. Gut a letter from my daughter, from Montreal, telling me cheerfully that she had one cent. (Wired her some money yesterday. Got a collect call this morning, saying she couldn't cash ii because she had no proof of identity, Phoned the Montreal telegraph office, told them it was OK to cash it. No can do. IConfirmation had to come from our local wire office. Called them, got off a wire and presumably she cashed in, as she hasn't called back yet. So, the original bite, plus two wires, plus two long-distance calls to Montreal. Should all kids, at birth, be •placed out on a lonely 'hillside for the 'shepherds to adopt? We might be flooded with shepherd's pie, but It would certainly •make life a lot simpler, uu'iutuiip'uiUuiillulliu;Iluilui6WlilulYlhlllpmmul'uldmdm`VliuihWilliiiiYiulniiuYlluu►WImtlWiuulfildiuuiliuYii!', ilfnnmiliilliu'wfu1161tNiliiiiwllwl'tuUltawuVlr.JI THE BLYTH STANDARD Douglas Whitmore, Publisher. It is not strange then that we have people saying -- "I am decent, respectable, law abiding, what more do you want, why talk to inc about religion." The plain fact is, however that human nature is sell' cin tied and this applies even to "nice" and "decent" people. Culture does not change this, education can not alter it, it merely puts a veneer over it and may make it a little less obvious and perhaps less crude, but self centredness is still there to spoil life. The infant has no concern beyond himself. It makes no difference to him how sick or weary mother may 'be, he complains loudly and persistently until somebody does something about the fact that he is hungry and wet. }3ut the same self centredness is evident in the grandmother too, who .will bore you with snap shots of her grandchildren, for an hour but is weary in five minutes when you bring out your collection. Original sin may he a topic for profound, abstract, theolog• ical debate but basically original sin seems to be the inborn self. ishness with which we all come into this world. It is bad enough that there are those who stoop to adultry, murder and theft but :probably the fact that should give us even more concern is the fact that even' decent respectable people are desperately self centred, Refinement and culture 'may conceal it a little but it is the kind of concealment of make up upon the face of someone dying of anaemea. It does nothing to correct the under• lying condition. 'Po be saved is to he cured of this self centred concept of life, 'There are those who talk about being saved who are extrem- ely self centred, and bring religion into contempt, Christian salva• lion means getting self out of the centre of the picture and putting God there, Jesus said something about seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, When God is at the centre of a life, then that life is transformed. To be decent is fine but it does not make one a Christian. REEEZEHOMEE Utile l ANAMENITEMEEMECINI M. IU ri5 l(j117.1F1Uu ., , 71 1.
