Firemen Get Fast
Start To Barn Fire
'Blyth Fiemen were "Johnny on
the spot" last Thursday evening
when they were called to a barn
fire on the farm of Joe Ryan,
R.R. 2, Walton. The fellows
were in the fire hall attending
their regular monthly meeting
when the alarm was turned in and
needless to say, made a record
run to the fire.
Even though the trip was a fast
one, the large barn on the farm
was completely destroyed, along.
with 40 cows and more than 50
pigs. Lightening had struck the
structure and it was completely
enveloped in flames in a matter
of seconds. The bolt had also
knocked the lights out in the
house and Mr. Ryan was busy re-
placing fuses when he saw the
fire in the barn.
Firemen were able to save a
chicken coop and a number of
hens housed inside.
Seaforth firemen were also cal-
led and assisted at the fire.

SUGAR
and
SPICE
By Bill SmilL,
TIIE READERS WRITE
Irish stew today, or clam chowder, or whatever your favor-
ite mucky dish is. It will contain dish and .eggs, metal and glass.
A recent column on , personal beefs brought a hair -raiser
from W. T. House of West •Gravenhurst.
Quote: "Question—for what formal education teachers have
done and are dohig, should -history indict 'them as murderers, man
-
slaughterers, suicides and conspirators thereto? I must vote
'yes,' because 'after years 'of ;research I have not been able to find
others on whom to place the responsibility for the hell on earth
which will be Our Canada in a very few years now — death and de-
struction everywhere,"
It may have been my attack on :the beer can that sparked
this. But.hogoes•on to say that scarcely any teachers know that ours
is a metal civilization, that we have nearly exhausted the most neces-
sary of these metals and 'that therefore our :form .of civilization is
ending,
Mr—House would 'never make a public relations man for
either the teaching•vocation or the metals industry, but he sure
comes to the point.
The same -column in .whicb 1 attacked disposable 'bottles,
brought a letter from — guess who — the public relations firm for
the Glass .Container !Council. Enclosed was a brochure called "No -
Deposit Bottles —.A Study."
The summary of The 'Study says the facts have shown that,
.properly handled, the no -deposit bottle is not a 'danger to children
or livestock, not*a significant source of litter, not a cause of forest
fires, not a problem in handling.solid waste.
How did we get _ontolorest fires?
It ends on a smug note: "The no -deposit bottle is wanted by
the public as a lam. of convenience packaging." 'Well, I'm one of
the cpuhiie, and .1 don't want it. Also, "convenience," used to he a
noun when •I went to school. •
But the key words 'In that blurb are "properly - handled."
Do they mean •the.faets of the .bottles. Facts, properly handled- can
be a snow job.
However, mustn't -get hung up -on 'the bottle. I promised
some fish in this stew. Read the fish story the other day. It's too
good to be true, but avillpass it along.
Local couple was 'vacationing In California. They were in-
vited to a wine andlish dinner, Hostess had a huge fish, salmon or
something, cooked, .garnished and put on .:the table. She went in
from the patiolor a last-minute check and there was the family cat
up to its eyebrows in.fish,
She squealed for :her husband. He came and like a sensi-
ble chap, said, "Turn it .over; they'll• never. notice." There was only
about a pound _missing, from the 7one 'side. Tthey did, the guests
were called in, and unanimously called it the best fish they'd ever
eaten,
Host, pleased at •his ingenuity strolled outside and saw
the cat lying 'dead. His thoughts can only be conjectured. But
three hours later, .after all :the guests lad.been /to hospital and bad
their .stomachs pumped out, he .and .his •wife got home, just a little
harassed. A neighbor .woman came rtcYthe door.
"I didn't want 'to 'disturblott while you had guests, and I'm
terribly sorry, :but I ran•over, your cat and ,killed it." End of story.
Which reminds me of Gracie:Fields and the eggs. This is
true. I was there, Miss Fields, Lancashire lass with great voice
and comic :sense, was on her fourthast farewell tour. She took
the old steamer Hamonica,on whiehl worked, down the lakes from
Duluth to Detroit.
In for ,breakfast 'two hours late, she ordered eggs. The'
chef was sore, 'but 'fried 'them. She sent 'them back, because they
were sunny side up. The .chef lifted an Oriental eyebrow ,then his
spatula, flipped .thean..over on :the 7p]ate, and sent tliem back in,
sunny side 'down.
Gracie being a rwmnan, ipeeked, and the poor devil of a
waiter, working • his t'way througiveollege, took the lull force of a
Lancastershire, tirade, While •the wily :old chef, in the galley, helped
himself to a igin, caring not a Cantonese -damn about Gracie Fields.

FROM THE MINISTER'S STUDY
THE HARD GROUND
The well-known parable of the sower, the seeds and the soil
(Mark 4:1.20) teaches that there is a vast difference in the ultimate
destinies of the souls of men and that there is a sense in which we
are directly and personally responsible for accepting or rejecting
the grace of God.
The four different types of soil are symbolic of the differ-
ent types of hearers, Jesus was speaking.about four kinds of hearts!
First, there is the hard-ipacked road! Hard ground! The
seed does -not go in even partly. Immediately Satan in the form of
"pigeons" gobbles fup the seed.
(One wonders why, when Jesus spoke so specifically about
the person and work of the devil, so many deny that he exists.)
The Apostle Paul also describes the hardened heart: "the God of
this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers; he keeps them
from seeing the light shining on them, the light that comes from :the
Good News about the Glory of ,Christ, who is the exact likeness of
God," (2 Cor, 4: 3, 4).
This condition is unrelated to intelligence.
The unitelligent can grasp spiritual truth and accept it, and
the wise and prudent of this world may be spiritually blind.
Thank God for the fact that the good seed of the Good
News cannot be snatched away from the humbled and softened
heart ;that turns to Him in simple faith! —
A reception and dance was held
in the 'Women's Institute Hall,
Belgrave, on 'Friday .evening to
honour Mr. and Mrs. Keith 'Pletch
on their recent marriage. Dancing
was enjoyed to the music of Tit.

Given an inch of a glowing cigar-
ette or burning matchstick dropped,
carelessly, fire will take a square
mile (and more) of forest. Given
a few cubic inches of old oil and
rags in a corner, fire will take a
whole acre of factory.
Given an inch or so ... of frayed
extension cord, or curtains too close
to a stove, or a fireplace screen
too narrow ... fire will take your
home and the lives which are in it.
Year after year, fire takes an averag e
of 600 lives in Canada. Five times
as many Canadians are disfigured
or injured, and property worth more
than $ 160 million is destroyed by
fire.
By any of these criteria, the cost
of fire -causing carelessness is
great. But the most terrible toll
is in young lives. A third of those
who die by fire are children.
Some of these children die because
they are left alone, some die be -
cause they play with matches. There
are other reasons too—but virtually
all the deaths are preventable.
Children die in fires through the
ignorance or the carelessness of
their parents or other adults.
Don't give fire an inch - you've got far too much to lose!

REPORT FROM QUEEN'S PARK
By Murray Gaunt, M.P.P.
Huron -Bruce
This week, the Legislature re-
convened after the Easter break
and was treated to a non-confi•
donee anotion by the Leader of
the Opposition, Robert Nixon,
based on the high costs and fin.
anelal confusion that has resulted
from the replacement of local
boards of education by county
boards. Included in the motion
was a rebuff on the governments
approach to regional government.
Education Minister 'Davies re-
jected opposition contentions that
the provincial educational system
is in financial chaos, but he ack-
nowledged that there are some
serious problems.
ile made it clear the county
boards cannot expect to find their
way out of the financial woods

ANNUAL MEETING
BLYTH ORANGE HALL
Monday, April 28th, 1969

All Interested Persons Welcome
Harold Turney, Pres. Simon Hallahan, Sec,
this year.
The Liberal Leader, Mr. Nixon,
accused the government of losing
control Of spending and warned
that 4he province was approaching
a taxpayers' revolution. In its
efforts to achieve a balanced bud•
get this year, Mr. Nixon said, the
Government reduced its share of
education costs in the province
to 40 per cent from about 48 per
cent last year.
Rural Councils say their school
taxes have doubled or tripled this
year. Education Minister Davis
said costs have increaed only 0 to
16 per cent in most cases.
Mr, Nixon blamed tax increases
in many municipalities to meet
rising school costs on "the dis•
credited trio of Premier Roharts,
Education Minister Davis and
Treasurer Charles MaeNaughton."
Ills motion read:
'That this House deplores the
inadequacy of government policy
in relation to the implementation
of regional, municipal, and edu-
cational government in Ontario,
failure to control costs, and its
its lack of local consultation, its
removal of local autonomy; and
therefore that the government
does not enjoy the confidence of
the iIouse."
Legislation stiffening proced•
tures for obtaining legal aid were
introduced by Attorney General,
Arthur Wishart, this week.
He also indicated a series of
steps to clamp down on lawyers
who have been abusing the Legal
Aid Act. since it was introduced
in 1966.
The Legal Aid Plan pays three
quarters of the lawyers' usual
fees,
A filibuster against passage of

mates of the Department of So.
tial and Family Services ended at

agreed to make welfare recipi•
ents aware that they can appeal
over the amounts of the awards.
The Government had previously
refused to give this notice but
now intends to make all welfare
recipients 'aware that there is a
Board of Review to hear appeals
from welfare recipients.
