Hospitalized With
Hand Injury
An. accident on Friday, Decem•
her 271h took much of the joy
out of the festive season for John
Manning and caused several day's
stay in hospital.
John was using the rip saw at
the planing mill when his left
hand dune in contact with the
large blade on the saw. The first
finger on the hand was severed
behind the second knuckle and the
next two finger's were badly cut.
Fortunately it was the back side
of the blade that the hand came
in contact with or the resulting
injury could have been much
more serious.
The hand was treated at Clint.
on hospital and it wasn't until the
following Tuesday that John was
allowed to return home.

LET'S HEAR YOUR VIEWS
Nothing like a good dose of the 'flu to make you feel like
'turning out a column of deathless prose. 1 feel like a fighter on
the ropes in the fourteenth round with the crowd yelling to the other
guy, "Kill him! Kill hits!"
So perhaps you'll forgive if we don't sparkle too brilliantly
today, and just clear up some items this week', then begin the New
Year with a fresh slate and a sound constitution.
We had a very merry Christmas, thank you, Rut an insidi•
oils old custom is being revived, No less than three difilerent groups
of carollers appeared at the door, and had to be suitably entertained.
By the time the last gang had left, we were well into Christmas
morning, among other things,
It's a charming old tradition, but 1 hope it doesn't spread
too far. If it does, next Christmas Eve 'I think I'll just call the cops
and have the carollers charged with disturbing the (peace It would
be a lot cheaper.
For once, everything fitted when the gifts were opened. See
the in my new off' white turtleneck sweater and Pierre Trudeau will
look like somebody from 'Hayfork Centre.
Kine, with her usual exquisite sense of timing, almost turned
Boxing•Day into a .boxing match when she announced she'd like to go
to Israel and work on a kibbutz for a year, after finishing high school.
So a couple of years from now, 1 may be a Jewish grandfather
That would be a switch.
Church 'bells and a blazing log fire and jolly evening with
old friends brought in the Now Year on a pleasant note. Not for
me the $30•a•couple New Year's 'Eve. in a nightclub with a lot of idiots
in paper hats, throwing streamers, blowing 'their little horns and
kissing everyone in sight.
Speaking of lbells, Lt. Col,. John ,McEwing of Spokane, Wash..
retired, has a bell in .the belfrey which is bothering him. Describing
himself in a letter as a "sentimental nut," he says he has bought tut'
bell from the little red schoolhouse he attended as a boy, near Port
Elgin, Ontario.
That bell 'has many memories for him. He planned to pre,
sent it, no strings attached, to the new consolidated school which
Ila. replaced the little one•room country schools, as a symbol of all
of them, those humble institutions where many a great man got his
stt:rt.
The .Colonel flew east and talked to the architect respon•
Bible. He was enthusiasitic, But the trustees stalled. They were
going out of office at the end of the year, and "couldn't make up
their minds" about having something as old-fashioned as an 1875
school bell on 'the premises,
To me, it seems ,an excellent. idea, •and .1 hope the new hoard
will be receptive .to the Colonel's idea. We talk a lot about Cana.
Meana, and preserving our heritage. Why sell it to the scrap dealers?
This brings us in a round-abottt way to the new school sys•
teal) in Ontario, which ,promises to be interesting, The old local
school boards, chosen in their own communities, are being scrapped,
and county boards, elected, .have already replaced them,
Theoretically, the idea is a good one. It should give equal,
ity of educational opportunity 'to all children. That's the purpose.
In the bad old days, before 1969, the fatter centres got the best fa-
cilities t.nd often the best teachers, while the leaner ones had to
struggle along with what they could afford.
I hope it works. 'But 1 have reservations. Many a time have
I seen something made bigger, so that It would be more efficient
anti cheaper to run. Usually, the opposite occurs, Expenses increase
and efficiency decreases, because of sheer size,
Parkinson's Law takes over. I:nlplre.bullding begins, Al.
ready hundreds of new administrative jobs have been created for
the new system, Under It, board ntembers will receive a stipend,
and no doubt, expenses,. The old boards worked for nothing, Paper.
work will double, Oleo triple, and so on,
Hope I'm wrong. It will take a couple of years to tell, And
by that time, the system may he so rigid that dhanging It will be like'
getting an elephant to stop standing on your foot, Any comments''

FROM THE MINISTER'S STUDY
THE UNIQUE BOOK
New books are 'published every day.
unquestionably ninny at' these books
But there is not one single volume that is of ETERNAL significance
to its readers — except the l3ible.
The Bible is certainly the ONLY book in all the world that conies
with the seal of divine authority resting upon it. In it's pages God'
speaks to elan so that he sees himself as God sees him, and sees
time and eternity in 'their proper perspective.
May I ask your attention again for the Book that is so available and
so neglected?
Once a woman walked into the doctor's office, limping and com-
plaining of increasing pain in her foot. The doctor found, that a
sewing needle was inbedded in the sole of her foot. Removal was
easy and before long the pain was relieved and the patient cured.,
The world ,goes limping along with personal and social problems
unresolved 'because God 'has not been permitted to speak through
his Word, diagnose the disease and offer a cure! .
Even true Christians can be miserable, because they do not permit
the searching Tight of God's troth to enter their hearts and reveal
the sickness there! The Bible is also like a mirror in which we see
ourselves as we really 'aa'e. Many' are unwilling to look into it be•
cause of their fear of what they may see.
We also find that lite Bible is at times truly like a sword — "The
Sword of the Spirit." As such it pierces the respectability that we
;nit on as a cloak. At the core of rhe holy Scriptures is 'found
Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Little wonder that Satan hates God's Word!
From the beginning he has asked with a sneer, "Did God say?" He
fears the Bible because it 1S the Sword of the Spirit against .whitth
'le cannot stand, Itis greatest victory today is among these in
whom he has planted a seed of doubt. by ('rank denial or by insinu-
ation, in' classrooms. in books, and even in the pulpit itself.
When you read the l3ible, may your response be: "1 rejoice -at Thy
Word like one who finds great spoil." t I's. 119: 162).
It is worth trying. because it works!
