--FROM THE. FOLKS AT THE STANDARD OFFICE
A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE
(By Rev, Peter Pakenham, Rector Trinity Anglican 'Church, Blyth)
"WHERE IS TIIIS BUS GOING"
When
A young man ran madly for a bus. When he fought his
.way.through the corwd of other passengers, he sank exhausted into
the first available scat; and then exclaimed "Where is this bus
going," We might ask the same question of ourselves, Where is
our destination? Where are we going in the year ahead?
God alone knows the complete answer,, And, with Him,
all -things are possible. But our goal must be the commanding goal
set by Jesus Christ—the Kingdom of God, It is not up to us; it is
Mainly God's gift. But we must do our part, and our part must be
(lone in loving obedience, We shall be given the opportunity to
show if we really want to go -through our Church's- program toward
a more Christian community, in home, in school, in industry—
indeed, in all of society here and everywhere. "Where is y -our bus
going?"
May God's Blessing go with you all through 1968, -

WELCOME TO '68
Well, to get off to a profound start, nve're all a year older
than we .where when we entered 1967.
As usual, there are exceptions to the rule, Some of us
weren't born. until June, and are only six monhs oldter. Others,
after the Dionysian rites of New Year's Eve, are eight years older.
But count your blessings if you bursitis, your blood pressure
and your belly are not hurting more, up more, or sticking out
more. or sticking out more,
And count some more if you've made a friend, had a
thrill, done one good thing, loved somebody, and stayed out of the
clutches of the boys with the strait -jackets,
I've managed to do all these things, these simple things,
and feel that this makes up, in some measure, for the fact that
1967 was probably the most harrassing year of my entire life,
The last year has been one of thane nightmares in which
you only realize you're awake when you pinch yourself and it
hurts. And when you pinch yourself and it doesn't hurt, it means
only that you're so numb you can't feel,
My firstborn quit -college and went on the bum, the bum,
Mexico, New Orleans, Montreal, Expo and now New 'York, where
he's studying acting. My brown -eyed (baby, to whom I once told
bedtime stories about Munkle•Uncle•Unkie and others, hates school
from the depths of her soul and wants to go away and be a
and LIVE. My wife Ls a

Sometimes I felt like crying, bursting into teaars, and letting Inas with her niece, Mrs, Ernest
Stevens and Mr. Stevens, of Wel-
the drips fall where they may. But I can't, The floor has just ton.
been polished. And somebody has to take out the garbage, and
drive the cleaning lady home,
But, as you see, there's something cheering about the whole
thing. There's no place to go but up.
Maybe Hugh will become a famous actor, Maybe Kim will
become a waitress who doesn't have her thumb in the soup. Maybe
the Old Lady will become normal,
And, who knows, maybe this is my big year, Maybe I'll
break 100 in golf? Maybe I'll write the Great Canadian Novel? Maybe
I'll get my Christmas tree to stand up?
Thus, hope springs eternal in the human heart. One mile-
stone nearer the grave, but also a milestone passed in the effort
to live life with .dignity, humor and love.
Perhaps you don't like those three terms, Perhaps you'd
prefer rectitude, righteousness and religion, Or industry', intelli-
gence and integrity. Fair enough.
I like mine because they're more difficult. I find it ex-
tremely hard to be dignifed, no matter how I try, It's almost im-
possible to retain a sense of humor when you have Rotten Kids.
And it's extremely difficult to love. Truly and without qualifica-
tions,
This is all very abstract. Let's get down to concrete examples.
Have you ever tried to be dignified while !performing a flying
tackle at your daughter in the snow in the back yard as she's
leaving home for good, at midnight?
Have you ever tried to retain a gay sense of humor when
your home form has given you, for Christmas, instead of the crock
you confidently expected, a bottle of shaving lotion? (Some people
can drink it; I can't,)
Have you ever tried to love someone with bad breath, a
constant sniff (and dirty fingernails, but who is basically a good,
dull person?
Ah, well, the hell with it, It's another year, Once a
square, always a square, And all three members of my family
agree that I'm the most perfectly rounded square they've ever met,
But I'm trying to become at least a parallelogram in '68. And the
same to you.

FROM THE MINISTER'S 'STUDY
Robert Louis Stevenson told of a Scottish hired man whose
work consisted mainly of working in and around cowsheds and
stables, When asked if he ever grow weary of his often unpleasant
work day in and day out, the man answered: "He who has something
beyond need never worry." The man or woman who prays, who
worships keeps in touch with that which is beyond. From the
meeting with God which we have in prayer and worship, we return
refreshed and strengthened for daily living. Our Lord said that
we ought to "keep on praying and never lose heart" (Luke 18:1).
Why not make prayer a daily habit in your life? You might be
surprised at the result.
What's ahead for TV in 1968?
What kind of schedules will be
put out by the networks for the
'68.69 season which will probably
start the first of September?
Downthrough the years we
have had comics and comedies of
all descriptions, westerns, movies,
adventure stories, animal stories,
murders, mysteries, variety shows,
news specials, documentaries, mu-
sic presentations, quiz shows, pan-
el shows and specials of all de•
scrip tions.
What's left? What will tele•
vision do next? Naturally, every-
thing will be in colour. But what
type of program will appeal next
year?
A few years ago the hit of the
season was The Beverly Hillbill-
ies, which is still :with us.
Ed. Sullivan is the oldest show
on TV and there are no signs of
CBS dropping that one.
Witches have appeared and
it's certain that series will go on
for a few more seasons,
When Batman made his appear•
ance the critics said it bad to go.
It's still with us, with Batgirl
being acicled to keep up the in.
terest.
This was the first year for
The Second Hundred Year -- a
story about a man frozen for 67
years and returning to normal
life, Well, maybe it's not quite
normal,
The flying nun descended upon
us in 1967 and is , certain to re-
main on earth for n few years,
Hits, are made in Hollywood,
but this year it was in Heaven,
Will the industry' go to the oOp-
nosite direction for material and
inspiration? Lets hope not,

Huronview Superintendent Gives Thanks
For Christmas Kindness To Residents
Clinton, Ontario,
December 29, 1967
The Blyth Standard,
Blyth, Ontario.
To the Editor:
Alay I have the privilege of
directing through you a message
to the people served by your
paper.
Again Christmas has been a
happy tirne for the residents of
Huronview, and on their behalf
I want to say thank you to the
many people who brought this
happiness to them, Many organ-
izations, churches, schools and
clubs came to the Home bringing
gifts and remembrances as well
as providing programs and enter-
tainment. Then there were the
many gifts given by relatives and
friends so that none was forgot.
en. The mail was specially
heavy, containing thousands of
letter and hundreds of parcels.
I do not wish to start naming
all those groups that I wish to
thank, in case I might overlook
someone and I would not want to
do that. However, I want to ex-
press our gratitude to the Ser-
geant's Mess and the Ladies' Aux-
iliary of CFB, Clinton, for the
gift of two wheel chairs,
On behalf of the residents of
Huronview and myself again many
thanks for everything you have
done at this season of the year,
and may 1968 be good to you.
Yours very truly,
Harvey C. Johnson,
Superintendent.

Witnesses To Attend Three -Day
Assembly This Weekend
Mr, L. Martin, presiding mini.
ster of Jehovah's Witnesses in
this area, anounced that families
from the surrounding district are
planning to attend the three
day Christian assembly that will
be held in Kincardine, Ontario, at
the Kincardine District High
School, January 5.7, 1968.
"Conventions of Jehovah's Wit-
nesses are family affairs," stated
Mr. Martin. "The reason for this
is that whole families attend as
a unit and the program is also
planned with all members of the
family in mind, Bible instruction
is given to all regardless •of age
or sex," he continued.
"Juvenile deliquencey is vir•
tually unknown among Jehovah's
Witnesses and the reason for this
is because parents take their
children right along with them to
congregational meetings and to
conventions like the one that will
he held in Kincardine, Of course,
parents must set the example for
the young ones by being present
themselves," said Mr. Martin.
Mr, M, Mais, Disrict Supervisor
for Jehovah's Witnesses in this
area, will be guest speaker on
Sunday, January 7, 1968, at 3 p.
m. He will deliver the public
address, "Will God Intervene in
Men's Affairs,"
Mr, Martin said, "All persons
are encouraged to attend."
Congratulations
Congratulations to Mr. John
Powell who celebrates his birth-
day on Wednesday, January 10,

Gordon E. Wightman Sends Best Wishes
And Remembrances to Walter Cooks On
Occasion Of Their 50th Anniversary
Thursday, December 28, 1967,
Dear Walter and Charlotte, -
The enclosed clipping from the
Blyth Standard,•• your home -town
paper, that comes to us each week
these many years, now -- calls for
some kind response from me, --
an old neighbor of BOTH of you
70 year's ago, •- and a school tea-
cher of yours, Charlotte, •• or was
I? away back in the brief year I
taught in S.S. No, 6, in Westfield
School a lifetime ago.
You two have now joined the
•oldtime club of us who have still
the same mate we were lucky
enough, to secure FIFTY YDARS
Ago! The details of events that
long ago are getting a bit hazy
for me, •- but I still have a clear
picture of your place, Walter, a
few rods up the little hill from the
church on the 4th Concession, and
of your place Charlotte, another
few rods East on the same 4th
next door to your Uncle Bob Tun-
ney, who used to tend the big old
wood furnace in the church, and
raise or lover the windows' that
ALWAYS stuck a bit in the church.
I can still mind the barn raising
on your old home place Walter, I
came home from 'C.C.I. from
Goderich to attend it. I also mind
when you farmed Robert Iro'over's
farm, and . the old Westfield
church was moved over to be
your drive shed,
My Conscious world of 1967 is
getting more and more to be the
images of those old PEACEFUL
DAYS, when WAR and TRAFFIC
HORRORS were undreamed of
and even a quiet death in the
community was a rare event, •- we
were all living in a GOLDEN
AGE --without even KNOWING
IT, -- and often idly complained
about how IIARD THE TIMES
were!
Our own wedding day fell in
June 1912, and we two here will
commence our 56th. year togeth-
er, -• if we live that long, till next
rune. We both teeter about a
little slower than we used to but
we still eat regularly, three tines
a day, and a day In bed is a for-
gotten experience for either of
us, Our combined ages add up
to 167, so you can sec our gripes,
if we have any fancied ones add
up to ZERO!
1 just wanted to say "Hello" to
you both, and urge you both to
remember that it is t'he HORROR
items that make the headlines,
The millions who mind their own
business, seldom get into the hur-
ried search of those who have
chosen News Reporting as a
means of making a living,
My Mother was ALWAYS an
exhorter AGAINST evil, I would
not be her true son if I Failed to
follow her lead, in sounding off
in my closing line,
" • I am come, that ye may
have Life, •• and May have IT
more ABUNDANTLY!'

Wittig,
By now, most drivers in On-
tario know that the best way to
slow or stop a motor vehicle on a
slippery surface is to pump the
brakes on and off, on and off,
thereby reducing speed and still
retaining steering control, Jam -
Bring the brakes on hard on a
slippery surface and holding then
on converts a motor vehicle into
an uncontrollable :toboggan,
Avoid Dangerous Skid Situa-
tions. Always adjust your speed
to road, weather and traffic con-
ditions.
The 0,P.P, urge 'all drinking
drivers to stay Off the Highways
so that we all may have a Safe
end Happy New Year.
