The annual meeting of the Goderioh W. C. T. U. was held on Tuesday after- noon of hast week in the Temperance Hall, 'tor election of oflicet•s and con- sideration of reports of work done in the various departments. A brief Bible reading was given by the president, Mrs. McGillicudey, in connection with the opening devotional exercises. It was decided, if possible, to obtain the services of the Misses Vincent and Cummings, W. O. T. U. around -the• world missionaries. to address two an- diences in the interests of the coming plebiscite. Also. arreugements were 'verde to hold mothers' meetings each Tuesday during this month. The recording secretary then read her annual report, of which the follow- ing is a synopsis; _Pit •tiltmthkry Today we have res ost im- pportant milestone in our existence as a Union. and heforo going farther we must give praise to caw Heavenly Fa- ther, who has brought us thus far on our way. Though we have not accom- plished nearly as much as we desired, still we au e learnino, and we enter upon the incominur year with increase ot hope, and longing that the preparation of the heart which comes alone from God for His work may he the blessing upon alt who are working in this branch of His vineyard. We have a membership of 88, besides 10 honorary members. There have been 20 regular, 1 special and 2 execu- tive meetings held during the year, with an average attendance of 10; the largest attendance at any one meeting was 27. Our meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. At these meetings we have not only conducted the necessary hnsifiess, but have endeavored W provide. besides the regular Bible talk and devotional exercises, some paper or reading of an educational character. We have in our Union 10 regular departntents of work, each in charge of a superintendent, viz: Prison work, Mrs. Holland; curfew bell, Mrs. Duff; railroad work, Mrs. Stod- dart: work amongs sailors. Mrs. Colin Campbell; Demorest medal contests, Mrs. Colborne; literature, Miss C. Fra- ser; work amongst lumbermen, Mrs. McKenzie; evangelistic. Mrs. Brydges; flower mission. Mrs. 'Farr; press, Mrs. McGillicuddy. The following is a brief synopsis of work done in the various departments during the year: Curfew Bell. --An effort was made to secure the act, but as we were unable to secure the cooperation of the Town Council, the natter was laid over for a time. Railroad Work. -The box at the sta- tion has been kept well filled with Wholesome literature, including religi- ous tracts and religious and temperance newspapers, to the ailmofint of several d Nuneds. r Work among Saildrs.-300 pages in tract form, and some copies of the Roy- al Templar, Christian Guardian. and outer temperance and religious news papers have been placed on boats call- ing RL Goderich. Medal Contest. -Four very successful medal contests have been held during the year; the last one we might say eves under the auspices of the County. We believe these contests have been the means of bringing Temperance and Prohibition to the fore, and we trust have been productive of lasting bene- fit. 'Tis ours to sow, thongh only God lira know the increase very, far to ascertain, because tint tilt are i*pttwltbili their limits at this kelt- Soo of the year. In consequence two teentha are lost. The Sea King bas, for ige nos. tide season caught op an average of 3.000 lbs. a week, live days. This• is certainly too little for profit when i is considered that it turkey about $1.200 eech spring to fit out a tug and an actual al exPansa of $18 daily y tor the season, which does not allow any - Wing for even wear and tear. Tbe'tlshermen complain severely and they have every reason to, What they would lige would be a general license, ono that covers the whole territory or even au extension south ns well as north in order to profitably pursue their chosen avocation. It is a well- known fact that lake fish move from one place to another with the change- able seasons. Why then shouldnot fishermen be given a license to cover the whole water during the license sea - 'son? There is undoubtedly reason for the present discontent and dissatisfac. tion with the powers that be, and we trust some actino may he taken by the Government to gave value for the money they receive, and thus protect as industrious, law-abiding, and hard- working class of wurtby citizens. Allow me a little space in your col- umns to ask if something cannot be done to relieve those living near Knox Uhurch on East street from the annoy- ance of the frequent ear -piercing clam- or of its very unmelodious hell ? Why church bells should be rung at alt, the small hours of the might not unreasonably be asked, since those wbo attend divine service roust be supposed to know when it begins. just as people know at what hour a theatrical pertormance, or w public lec- ture, begins; at what hour railway trains leave, &c.
