ALL TES PASSENGERS SAVED.
NEW YORE, July 7 -The steamship
City of Washington, of the Inman line,
went ashore in a dense foe. at 2 o'clock I
..n Saturday afternoon, on Gull Rock
bar, seventy miles east of Sambro.
A1} the passeneers, crew, baggage and 1
spare stores were safely landed. The ves-
set is tight, except in the engine room,
vrhere 'water runs in and out at high tide. j
HArns...x, July 7 (midnight) ---The City ;
of VITashington has about fifteen feet of
water in her hold, and is likely to be-
come a total wreck. 11 er purser was
expected here to -night but has 'not yet
arrived, and it is impossible to get furth-
er intelligence from the wreck to-
night, as she lies 20 miles f COM any tele-
graph office.
The telegraeh lines have bee in terrn pt - '
ed swath of alifax for two days, and- it
hes been impossible to forward the news
until to -night_
Ail on board the City of Washington
are reported saved.
The latestintelligenee from the wreck
states that the vessel has broken in two. !
Attorney -General Clark, of Manitoba,
is a genius in his way. At the late ses-
sion of the Court of Queen's Bench in
Menitoba, one Peter Cottois eras charg-
ed withstealing a purse containing a sum
of money, and upon this charge he was
indicted. t&ee-for "stealing, money,"
and far "brainy." The secret of this
double indictment business may be ex-
plained by the fact that the Atstornev-
General, who ads as Crown Prosecutor,
receives 625 for each indictment. His
ingenuity in double indictments last
year gained to him an increase in his re-
venue to the ee-tent of .9.2,000. Who
Rays- that the Attorney -General of Mani-
teba. will not become a rich man?
It must admitted on an sides that if
Sir John Macdonald be innocent of the
Hantington charges he has played his
cards badly; but if guilty he has played
them with remarkable skill. His right
band must have lost its cunning if he,
be4ng innocent, could not have had the
investigation over long ago, his innocece
established, and the stein upon tho
national honor removed.
It is stated,- in well-informed circles
that tho actual azreernent between the
Government and Sir Hugh Allan by
which the latter was to receive the Pa-
cific laeilway contract on condition of
his furnishing money no influence the
elections in favor of Ministerialists is in
ezistence and would have been produc-
ed la ovitieneehaelthe investigation pro-
ceeded last week.
