The lantern has nous the loss i ta uses in

along the fronts of shops it declares the
surname of the proprietor within, in
huge characters, and no respectable
domicile is without one. Indeed, all
lanterns, whether carried in the hunk

walking the streets of a night, a man
can always discern that his friend Jones •

his figure is discernable. Official per-

An exehange tells a great deal of truth
avhan it says there is ono foible atnong
housekeepers that cannot be too severely
reprobated. It is a contemptible itching
for a knowledgeeef their neighbors' af-
feats. This curiosity leads some to en-
courage and listen to the scandalous
prattle of their own servants conceruing
the domestic atrairs of other families in
which they have been einployed. Ser-
vants are always ready to take ad vantae.e
of the slightest advance towards fami-
liarity en the part' of the mistress, and
when they find one weak enough to re-
lish a relation s f the yicea and fillies of
others, the appetite will always be ad-
mmiitered to so lone as a prolific brain
can coin a falsehood. Mistresses should
recollect while encoeragine*this practice,
their own househeld will be served upl
with ne loss exaggeration or defect .
wheoever their domestics shall pass into I
another family. And_whereis the reale-
dy for that evil? It ties in the hands of I
every head of a family. This tattling
tendency should be stopped at every
c immencement; and if a refusal to listen
to the scandalous catalogue of private
weakness or error were accompanied by 1
a severe reprimand, society would be
benefitted.

Crickets.
The common house cricket has the not
able peenliarity of possessing both inci-
sive and molar teeth. This enables the
insect to destrey roaches much larger
than itself, and to eat through very
tough snestances. Crickets have been
known to spell the soles of boots left
within their reach over night and they
will frequently nfade holes in wet stock-
ings, under like circumstances. The
power of chirpiag belongs only to the
males. These are provided with what
corresponds to a little drum or tambour-
tne, formed by the horny or parchment -
like substances of the short upper wings.
These wings have roughened edges, and,
being rubbed with a vibratory 'move-
ment, upon the integument forming tt e
drum, produce the familiar "creek, ,
creek of the insect.
