The Man of All Trades.
Gilbert Cliarles Stuar'., the artist, was
traveliing Englaed in a stage coach with
some gentleeien whe were strangers to
him, lett all wer.;4crfeckble and lively. The
party steened to dine at an inn, and after
dinner, the cenversation being animated
and variells, Stuart bemtme conspicuous in
it, not ony for his wit and humor, but -for
iiis correct ind enent, rapid thought, and
apt phrases. Tae curiosity of his eonipa-
items was aroused, and with Yankee -like
inquisitiveness tney desired to kn_w who
and whet ae was.
Mr' Stuart, with a grave face and in a
seriOus tone of voice, realied that he some-
titnes dre, ssed gentleinee s and ladies. hair.
" 0 ! you are a hair -dresser, then ?" re-
turned one of the c.unpanya with a some-
what deregatery stare.
•-W hat : d I look like a barber ?" de-
manded the ;neteanito artist, sternly.
" I beg your pardon, sir," replied the
subdued coc-kney, "but I inferred it from
what you said. 111 mistook you, niay take
the liberty to inquire what you are, then?"
" Wha, eotneritn es I brush a geritleruan's
coat or hat and adjust his cravat."
" 0 a you are a valet, then, to some
nobleisian ?"
.. "-A valet !'' retorted Stuart., with mock
indignatien; "indeed, sir, ant not. I ant
-wit a servant. Te be sure, I make coats - - -
and waist coats for gentle! nen.-'
" Ah ! you are a tailor 1"
• " Tailor ! do you taxe me for a tailor ?
I 11 assere you I never handled a goose
other than a roasted one.,"
By this ti ne the joke was beginning to
be fully appreciated, and the whole coin-
yeny were in a roar of langhter.
••• What in the world are you, then ?"
demanded another gentleman, taking up
the oftice of interlocntor.
" 1 will tell you," said Stuart, with
great apparent sincerity; "be assured all I
have told you is strictly true. I dress hair,
brnsh hats and coats, adjust cravats, and
4, make coats, waistcoats and breeches, and
likewise boots and shoes at your service ! '
" Oho ! a hoet and shoe maker after
all !" contemptuously returned the ques-
tioner.
" Guess again, gentlemen," continued
Stuart. nood-huneoredly. "I never han-
dled booci or shoe but for my own feet and
legs: yet all 1 have told you is true."
la We may as well give np guessing; it is
of no use."
The fnn-loving painter. checking his
owu laughter, whictewa.s on the potnt of
burstihg ferth, and stimulating a fresh
flow of spirits by a huge pinch of snuff,
said, gravely, as if bringing the matter to
a satisfactory conclusion-
" Now, gentieinen, I will not play the
fold with you atte tenger, but will tell you,
Loam inv honor as a gentleman, my bona
fide prefession-I get -my bread by mak-
ing faces."
He then screwed up his countenance
and twisted his features in a manner the
most skilful clown tniatht have envied.
When the loud peals of laughter had sub-
sided, the company wath one accord de-
clared that they had all the while suspect-
ed that the gentleman belonged to the
theatre; they all kuew he must be a come-
dian by professioe. Rut when Stuart coolly
ioformed theta that he never was on the.
stage, and- very rarely inside of a play
house, their chagrin and astonishment
equalled their previous. merriment.
" Gentlemen," said Stuart to his com-
panions, " you will find all I have said in
