The _telegraph clespetches give but 'a meagre report of the remarkable and vio- lent atmoapheric commotion which disturb- ed the inhabitares of Chicago on Tuesday afternoon ofiset week. The city vrls sud- denly, at 5 p. m., Plunged in utterclarkness and he cititens had to light the gas in all the streets. " The darkness was imusually dense and chill giving a sersatiott ns though a tremendous hailstorm help -cited very near. Three times did tie phenoln. erion appear and hen pass away, leaving at last the. sen ahining as brightly as ever. The Telegraph wires ceased to woi 'a at the • time. Itkother parts of the State this con- nexion developed into rex awful tornado. At Galesburg and Shanghai a fearful de- vastation happened, with loss of Wein the latter place and the destruction of fifteen dvedlinge school houses, and two or three churches. Services _commenced in the Second Ad- vent Church, a new building corepleted last fall, at 4 o'clock p. m. As the people were wending their way from their farms and cottages to church, the sun was btight- ly shinning although cloudswereseen in the heavens. It was a day not now common in this State at this time of the year. l'he pester of thechurch, Rev. G. Hurd, itscend- ed the eneed puIpt a.nd commenced his dis- course, which was not internipted until it was nearly through, when the evidences of the coining disaster began to be appar- ent. First it was perfectly still, and then a noise was heard itt the distance as of the The Attempted Assassination of Prince Alfred — Concerted Piot 13gainst His Life. . (Latest to thtligiud.) Further telegrams, .4 the same date as those already made public from the Earl_ of Belmore to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, intimate that the aasassina- R. ation of his oyal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was attempted by O'Farrell in pursuance of messages sent from conspira- tors in this tountry, which ordered the Prince's death. It is understood that O'Farrell wes selected by lot to per- petrate the crime, and that the attempt would have been made when the Prince landed in state, hut that an opportunity of doings() without risk of injury to others did not eteur. . The New South Wales Government offer- ed EI,000 reward for the apprehension f each accomplice ; and one arreitt, consider- ed to be important, has been made in Victoria. A distinguished observer of the events of that time has recorded an aneoclate, which we do not remember to have seen in print, but which throws a singular fight oia the origin. of Mr. Disraeli's relatiores with his furture alherents. It was early in the session of 1346, when a kuf t of ardent pretecticnists, boiling over with rancour adid resentment they had not trords to express addressed themselves Mr. Disraeli. They proposed to him that he should undertake to direct systemati- cally and at saort intervals the whole bat- tery of his vituperative powers against Sir Robert Peel. On their. part they engaged to be present en ma.sere on these occasions, and to support there mouthpiece by voci- ferous cheering. The interview was a curious one. We have seen an account of it by one who knew all that passed on the occasion. Mr. Disraeli requested to have twenty minutes to consider the proposal. At the end of that time he. accepted it.— The barnin was kept by both parties.— Mr. Disrat ,..-. spoke; the Tories cheered. They considered him their servant; but in such service there was the voice of a mas- ter. It had probably occ.r_rred to Mr. Disraeli in those twenty minutes, or be- fore, that the man who spoke for them, who thought for them, who was ready to act for them, and who condescended to be the instrument of their prejudices and passions, would be cheered so lustilly by these blind hamlet's that they would at Last discover they had bawled him into ab- solute power over their party and them- selves. and shareholders of the company, to make the defendants, who are pest directors and executors of deceased directors of the com- pany, liable for large losses which the bank had suffered through the alleged improper conduct of the directors. It appeared that the bank had, in 1846; exhaustedits called - up capital and reserve fund, and the direc- tors ought then to have wound up the af- fairs of the bank, but instead of doing so they carried on the business at a great loss etyethe shareholders. It also appeared that -eoneiderable Sums had been improperly ad- vanced to a Me. Higgins. The hearing of the case lasted some time, and the former manager was subjected to a ,severe cross- examination. His Lordship held that the plaintiff vtas the proper person to institute proceedhAgs in respect of the matters in question, and that he properlyrepresentecithe sharehold- ers and creditors.
