Never be afraid of an Irish start,;,even if

our:Neaten be -afraid of having your
cane:agezs:trned, even if the narrow street
of a little town be (as it generst ry is) so
full of cars, people, pigs, poultrys. snit

passibility of a passage beitbg obttned for
thhrough the, deuso mass. Do

of tho swarrain;opulation will be run
over. Thecae's, the Reople, the pigs, she.,
will indeed: retia:;nn m the -way till the
leaders which drain your carriage actually
touch them. The whole scene kinks in
most die dful confusion. The hooses rear ;
the peetboys los& as if they could notkeep
,their seats, and lead no power over the
• restive horses. The populace . hillo, the
pigs squeak, the Single men vociferate in
Irish, jabbering it quicker and more
vehemently than ever. But again I say
it, do not be in the 'least afraid, or no
accident ever happens.
There seems, indeed, a peculiar provi-
dence over Irish drivers, and all the noisy
oeetapants of the craawded street. Drunk-
en men reel"about on foot oronhorseback,
without ever seeming to do themselves or
others any harm. At Bandon, I recollect
seeing a drunken man gallop down the
street, and as thehorse turnedshort round
at the bottotia of it,theriderwas•precipitat-
' ed off upon hie head; bat he very deliber-
ately got up again, and endeavored to lead
his horse away by the tail
a There does indeed seem a special pepvi-
dence expressly provided for Irishmen,
women, and children, without which,
what with fires, floods,., burning, .house -
failings, upsettings, ale., there would
not be a whole bone in the Island. " I
have been doing Ray best to drive over a
child in this town for the last eight and
twenty years," said an English mail -coach
driver to his friend on the box, " and
never eouid do it t'" The risks that are
run, the hazards encountered in every ex-
cursion by land or by water, by these
dare -devil people, wonld`astontsh and ter-
rify their more civilised neighbours. At
the top of . one of the. steepest mount
roads in the west of Ireland, Lord Goalie -
more stopped the driver of the chaise he
was seated in, prociaimpag his intentionto
walk it down rather than proceed in the
carriage, the rather as one of the horses, a
young, long tailed chestnut, had given,
even on the level read, same verynnequivo-
eal signs of hot temper and unsteadiness.
" I'd rather get out here," said the
Chief Baron.
" Amara l-' said the postillion, purposely
turning a deaf easy to what he conceived a
slur upon his coaehmansbip.
" I'll get down -open the door, my
amen, ' reiterated his lordship.
" True for ye, it's a fine bit,`' of road, yer
honor," said the incorrigible fellow, still
pretending to mistake what was said, and
all the while 'approaching slowly and in-
sidiously to the verge of the hill. " Now,
hould fast," dad the wretch as he laid
the Trach first over one: then over the
othee of his horses; and .set off down the
mountain at a most furious pace. The
horses both flying out at either side from
the pole, and the el isespinning and bump-
ing through ruts and over stones. that
every minute threatened ee nihit ation-the
long-tai'ed chestnut semitriving, even at
the top of his speed,=tG.0$ow both his hind
hoofs very near the • judp's nose, as he
sat in the elaais , the postillion sprin ;ung
with wonderfuli agility from one side to
the other, a'oid Mass that threatened
every instant to ar i eh has skulL Down
they went, thepinoreasing,thewimdows
brokemby the atonettseaon, and one door
Bang wide open, and increasing by its
j`oanging noise, the confusion of the scene.
',The road terminated at the foot of the
eaottnts.in,Y in a narrow bridge that lecLoff
at a very sharp angle from the line ; and
here the torted lodge expected, as inevit-
able, the fate that he had hitherto .by mir-
acle escaped. Down they came, . the hot
cheatnaat, now half triad from excitement,
' springing four or five feetat every bound,
and draK4eig alongtthe other horse at the
same teriifie mate. 'Theyreaehed thebridge ;
round went the chaise on two wheels, and
in a moment more- they pulled spin safety
at the oppssi<te side, both the horses be-
ing driven, colter -up into a gnickset edge.
Before the Chief Baron had time to speak,
the fellow uasdown, mending the harness
with a piece of cord as leisurely aa if
nothing, had happened. '
ff Tell ire, my lane fellow," said his
lordship, " was that chestnut ever hi
less be€oral"
"'Never, ray teed ; but the master says
he'll t, ve, eight pounds for her, if she'd
bring your lords: pp down this bit of Sliev
na-muck, without brerikitig the chaise, os
doing ye any harm."
