Goin' My Way? --This jeep owned by a medical supply firm
almost came to the parting of the ways. The right wheel
wanted to turn right, the left wheel wanted to go left, and the

In the immortal words of Captain
Gubbins, let a plain statement suf-
fice. For various reasons it is neces-
sary for this column to be written
some days in advance, Furthermore,
while the conductor of sante is not
a resident of Toronto, that fair city
might be roughly known as his
spiritual home. (And if the printer
spells that "spirituous" there'll be
trouble.)
* * *
To get on with our tale of woe,
this particular column was started
immediately after the following un-
toward happenings in the realm of
sport;
* * *
(1) The Toronto Maple Leafs
Baseball Club had been knocked
out of the International League
playoff series by—of all people—the
Montreal Royals,
* *
(2) The Toronto Argonaut Foot-
ball Club had taken, not just a beat-
ing but a real shellacking, at the
hands—anti feet—of the hated Ot-
tawa Rough Riders,
* * *
(3) The Toronto Balmy Beach
Football Club had raised a vast lack
of enthusiasm in the bosoms of their
most ardent supporters by failing
to score even once while the Wind-
sor Rockets were tallying a jolly 35
points.
* * *
(4) The best thing of the season
—"just like oil in the can„ or
money from home"—was a filly
named "Flying Alice," favorite in
the Grey Stakes at dear old Wood-
bine Park, known to all horse -lovers
as the place where they really run
to form. Breezing homeward well
in front the young lady suddenly
got the idea that her name was
"Swimming Alice," headed for Lake
Ontario, and pulled up a lovely last,
* * *
So it is sincerely hoped that the
customers will understand why, to-
day, this column is of necessity
brief and tinged with gloom. Some
genius once said that one picture
is worth a thousand words — so
here's the picture,
The one thing wrong is that the
artist got the name on that tomb-
stone spelled wrong. It should be
"DOUGH" not "DOE."
EAT UP
One who has lived with a garden
all summer comes now to the time
when a sense of immediacy begins
to close in, Days shorten, Growth
slackens, The garden is still full and
overflowing with plenty, but one
knows that it may be the last full
crop, The season grows late,
At planting time the season
stretched ahead almost without
limit. The first fruits were precious,
garner from the fertile soil. Mid-
sunlliter brought bounty, 'Then so
touch came at once that there was
a surfeit. But now, with an end in
sight when the frost shall come
creeping up the valleys, the garden
is precious again•
Corn is at its peak, but will the
late corn have time to mature its
ears? Early lettuce bolted in the
heat; will the late lettuce, now be-
ginning to head, Brake its way to
the salad bowl? WII the scattered
blossoms on the limas make pods,
or is this present crop to be the
last? And what of the string beans
and the summer squash? What of
the cauliflower—will it, or the
frost, win out?
One picks the pods and the ears,
pulls the carrots and appraises the
beets. One watches the winter
squash, and looks for signs of blight
on the tomato plants, wondering
which of the greets tomatoes will
ripen, And the flavor, once the gar-
den comes to the table, is almost
as good as it was when the first
small peas were eaten. The season
that was going to last forever be-
gins to fade; days lie ahead when
there will be neither pod nor pome
in the garden but only dry stalks
and frosty ground. Eat up! The end
is in sight, with early fall upon us.
HIS ERROR
A bombastic man met his hen-
pecked friend, whose face suggested
a recent accident.
"How did that happen?" nis
friend asked.
""
"YourMywife wife? Ah, evidently you
have not acquired the secret oL
maried bliss. I never have a row
with my wife: I have no secrets
from her."
"Neither have II" the other sighed.
"That's the trouble. I only thought
I hadl"
ONCE BITTEN
A lawyer was walking along the
street when he met a friend to whom
he had recently given some simple
legal advice and to whom he had
sent his usual sizeable bill.
"Nice day, isn't it?" remarked the
friend, and then added hastily;
"But I'nl not asking you: I'm tell-
ing you."

FOR OVER two centuries, Canada has
been the land of opportunity to
settlers from almost every country
in the world, Much of our strength
and vitality stems from this blending
of racial and cultural heritages,
It is a matter of pride to all
Canadians that so many races,
without sacrificing their national
characteristics, have united them-
selves into one great citizenship —
the Canadian Family,
Gallant Belgium, whose poppy -
carpeted fields of Flanders hold ten-
der memories for many Canadians,
has sacrificed much in the cause of
freedom, Comprising two distinct
racial groups — the Flemings. and
the Walloons —she has given many
of her sturdy sons to Canada.
Among them have been many
distinguished figures in' Canadian
arts and sciences, The majority,
however, specialize in agriculture
and have done much to stimulate
tobacco -growing in Ontario and
Quebec. Li the mid -west many have
become successful dairymen.
A devout, thrifty and dependable
people, they have earned the respvct
of their fellow -citizens for their con-
tribution to Canada's progress,

Last Friday was a lovely day —
Just pleasantly warm— and was I
glad because It was my day for
going to the Exhibition. So away I
went on the 8;45 bus, I could have
• caught an earlier bus — but not
after canning all day Thttrsdayl
Anyway it was only 10:30 when I
reached the Exhibition grounds —
too early for it to be uncomfortably
crowded. So for once its my life 1
was able to take my time in the ,
Women's Building and really see all
There was to see. Such beautiful -
work, and so much variety!, Like
everyone else I was absolutely sold
on the beautiful little shell pictures
made by an inmate of the Mercer
reformatory, in fact had I been
given the choice, I would rather
Own the shell pictures than the
fabulous Hope diamond! That dia-
mond , , , I looked at it, and looked
at it, making several trips to do so,
and to me there was sotnething un-
canny in its flashing blackness. One
thinks of a diamond as being bright,
with sparkling lights -- but this was
a greyish -black, hinting at some
hidden but sinister beauty within
its depths. It was very easy to
connect the diamond with all its
ill-fated history.
The display of period fashions
through the centuries was very ht•
teresting—although I think they
must have run out of shoes as the
footwear on some models was very
modern.
The quilts were lovely — some of
theme quite new its desigp. The one
that appealed to ire most featured
the crest and motto of the Women's
Institute in the centre• of the quit.
The design was very cleverly car-
ried out. The Canadian Handicraft
Guild had a wonderful exhibit—
everything made by hand, and made
In Canada, Front silver to wood-'
work, and pottery to weaving. There
are a lot of clever fingers in Canada.
There were two other exhibits
that attracted me so much. One was
an exhibit of wallpapers and the
other was Canadian fabric used
largely in staking drapes. The de-
signs on both the wallpapers and
the drapes were really marvellous.
What one could do with money to
spend and a house to furnish! One
wonders why anyone ever chooses
anything that is drab and colourless
when there are so many beautiful
things to choose from.
After' seeing all this -- and plenty
more I haven't even mentioned —
I !made my way to the tearoom
where I had a luncheon date with
the Exhibition) These luncheons
are _ really something to enjoy —
rooms with a restful setting, look-
ing out towards the take, over the
heads of the milling crowd, Good
service, an appetising meal and int•
teresting companions. This day was
Press and Radio Day, and so there
were many people faitiliar to most
of us by name who were there In the
flesh. It was all very friendly and
informal and I enjoyed every min-
ute of it. 1 met several lady edit-
ors whom I knew — but it didn't
really matter if you knew people
or not — everybody talked t 'every
body else — press people are like
that anyway.
After lunch a little woman from
Manitoba asked if slie could walk
around with Inc a bit as she, was
alone. So we stayed together almost
an hour acid she thought everything
was wonderful — on this, her first
visit to the Exhibition. It was too
cool to listen to the band for very
long so I went into the buildings
again through — the flower show
and the Art Gallery. Then a cup
of tea and away to get the bus
down town to meet n ;•liter, so
we could have t:tc trip home to-
gether. That bus trip down town
was a bit of a nightmare — we got
tied up in the five-o'clock traffic and
waited for ages on Front Street,
You will notice I haven't men -
flatted Partner, On farm we often
have to divide forces, as it were.
This day that I had arranged to go
to the Exhibition, Bob. was away to
a threshing and we were also ex.
peeling a coal delivery, sp Partner
stayed at home. But the next day
Father and Daughter made the trip,
And they did things properly. They
not only went to the Exhibition but
they took in dinner and a show
down town, They had quite a day —
thanks to our local bus service.
Teen-agers swarmed the bus, leav-
ing less nimble older folk standing
ronin only. Coming home, Partner
and Daughter were at the regular
departure platform on time. No
sign of the bus, When Daughter
made inquiries she was first told it
would be along any minute, ,and
then that it had pulled in at a
different pkttfornt and left — un-
announced. So they had no choice
but to wait for the late bus. Again
there was standing room only.
Partner: refused to -get on and was
then told another bus was on its
way, It came—an hour later!
Two a.nt. when they arrived home,
Quite a day)

how far
birds fly to
migrate
•
Every year, at certain times, millions of birds in every part of the world
suddenly take wing and fly varying distances to foreign climes. No one
yet has been able to satisfactorily determine the prime impulse of these
migrations and to fathom the great mystery of its accomplishment.
Do You Know .. . that the Arctic Tern nests
within the Arctic Circle and then flies over more
than 10,000 miles of ocean to winter on the
islands of the Antarctic! , , , that the Grey Plover
breeds in the Arctic Circle and winters in equa-
torial countries! , , , that swallows ringed in Great Britain have been
traced to South Africa, more than 6,000 miles awayl
Do You Know . . . that migrants usually fly at
under 3,000 feet?... that the average distance
flown in a day is 200 miles, even though the
full flight may be thousands of miles? .. , that
many species manage to cross these enormous distances without a
breakl ... that even young birds, making the trip for the first time,
make the flight unerringly, without guidance from the older birdsl

CHAPTER X,
No more than the allotted five
minutes elapsed before Virginia was
mounted on the spirited gray mare
which Jiro Randall had loaned her.
The gray, eager to he off, took minc-
ing steps as Virginia held it in and
looked down at Lanya Correy,
The girl's dark eyes were fright.
ened. "It's a dangerous ride," she
said.
"I can't think of that," Virginia
told her, "Phil must be warned."
Lanya looked over her shoulder
and shivered. "I-1'11 try to hold
him here," she said, and moved
away toward Steve Barron's place,
The great expanse of desert lay in
every direction, stark lonely, all
sand and cactus, red rocks and
bunch grass, A shimmering wave
of heat haze blurred, the distant rim
to the south. Miles beyond the
haze lay Phil Lawrence's ranch
house. And perhaps danger.
Jim Randall's command had
marched south that morning. Apach-
es, Mrs. Warden had heard, had
;wept up from the Pines and raided
and burned a ranch house within 10
miles of Santa Bonita,
But Virginia had no fear for her-
self as she rode. She could only
think of Phil's danger, of the deadly
threat of Steve Barron's voice,
After the long eight miles, she
saw the high red butte to the west
and swung the gray that way, Vir-
ginia felt relief under her breath-
lessness. Phil's adobe house stood
near that butte.
She saw the dobe, white against
the green of the cottonwoods be•
hind it, The other ranch buildings
loomed gray and bleak near it. The
clatter of hoofs brought a figure
to the dobe's doorway, and from
afar Virginia knew it was Phil.
He came running as she jerked
the gray to a stop amid a cloud
of sifting dust. He caught her•as
she slipped from the saddle,
"Phill" Virginia gasped.
There was a bristle of reddish
beard on his cheeks and chin. He
smiled thinly through it -the first
time that she had seen hien smile.
"You look as though you had been
riding hard, Virginia. "It's too hot
11
"Phil," she said breathlessly,
"Steve Barron -he has found out
about youl"
His smile fled. "About me?"
"That you are the one who has
been robbing the stages l"
"Ohl I see." His voice was in-
different. Then he was searching
her face. "And you know too," he
said.
"It makes no difference to me,
Phil. I -I know you can justify
whatever you have done,"
He reached out and gripped her
arm. "Thanks," he said. Then:
"He's coming here?"
"Yes I Lanya thinks he means to
kill you!"
Sharply, "Lanya?"
She looked him squarely In the
eyes. "I know about her, too, Phil,"
"Yes," he murmured. "Yes, of
course."
"Phil, you must leave here -at
once I"
He nodded slowly, There was a
calm hastelessness about him that
reminded her of Jim Randall, Oh,
he had changed! And the changed
way of him frightened her. She
tried to read his thoughts, but saw
only that his eyes were bright and
eager, 1
"You're going?" she demanded.
"Yes," came his slow answer,
"Yes, I'm going."
Virginia watched him as his nar-
rowed glance drifted out across the
desert. He edged his lips •with a
Thin strange smile. Then his glance
Came to her.
ISSUE 39 - 1949
"I'll have to see you hack to
town," he said. "it's dangerous for
you to ride alone. I've seen Apache
signs about."
"1 came through safely, Phil, I'll
get back all right."
He met her eyes. And said gently,
"111 not forget what you did, Vir-
ginia,"
Her impatience was uncontrolla•
ble. "Please, Phil -ride!"
His glance drifted desertward
again. 'I1e's coaling, Virginia. It's
too late to turn tail and run -even
if 1 wanted to,"
• * *
She turned quickly and looked out
across the bright desert. She saw
tardily what Phil had minutes ago
noted. A rider was bearing toward
the ranch. Her lips felt suddenly
dry and cold.
• « «
"He's come alone," Phil said,
"It's all right. It had to be some-
time."
Virginia turned tortured eyes on
hint. "Phil, you're eager for this,"
she said. "And I know 'what's in
your mind. Steve Barron stands be-
tween you and Lanya, That's what
you're thinking!"
The • rider was very close, He
was slow -walking his lig black
now. Phil's ales never left hitn.
"Virginia, go inside.",
Despair swept over her, "Phil--"
She tried the only argument he
would listen to. "If you love that
girl. ."
"Go into the house," he ordered
again; his voice was harsh. She
dared not disobey it,

The Call of Isaiah, Isaiah 6:1-I0.
Golden Text: - Also I heard the
voice of the Lord, saying, Whom
shall I send, and who will go for
us? Then 'aid I, Here ant I; send
me, Isa. 6:8,
During the last quarter we study
"'file prophets speak" with selected
passages from Isaiah and Jeremiah.
Isaiah was a ratan of great talent,
whose variety of eloquence was
such that it exceeded the average
even after being translated into a
language that did not exist in his
day, It is said dia. Daniel Webster
would read extensively in the Book
of Isaiah to saturate himself with
its spirit of eloquence on the night
before he was to give some epoch-
making speech,
Isaiah gives an account of his

Christ in His glory. (Sec John

Christ's holiness - so great that

own uncleanness, On the acknowl-
edgement of his dire need God pro-
vided a personal cleansing, Now he
could hear God's voice saying,
"Whom shall 1 send, and. who will
go for us?" The two requirements
for delivering God's message are
here seen. The man 1111181 be sent
of God, and he must be willing
to go. Isaiah having experienced
the cleansing of his own nature and
keenly aware of the need of his
people, responded, "Here ant I; send

may be able to deliver thoughtful
cultural essays in fine style, but few
people will be brought face to face

Not all of Isaiah's hearers needed
his message. Many simply closed
their eyes to the truth. It was of
him as of Paul, "For we are the

... Fall Fair Time In Ontario ...
The Black And White Show—Sponsored by the Ontario County Holstein Club drew many entries. Shown above are some of
the, best including the 4 -year-old Wet Senior Champion, Elmcroft Dew Drop M and Reserve Champion, Macbarr Countess
Lohinvar. Mr. H. L. Fair of Uxbridge is very active with .this Black and White Holstein Club and much of the success of
the show may be attributed to his efforts,
The Winner At Milverton—The 3 -year-old Illy, Queen, owned by Mr, William Bannerman of
Monkton is shown above. Queen placed first in the Agricultural Class against very keen com-
petition. Mr. Bannerman plans to enter Queen in a number of other Fall Fairs during the
coining season,
Rain at Blyth didn't dampen
the spirit of that well known
radio announcer, Torry Gregg.
The officials of the Blyth Fair
used a technique which might
well be followed by many of
the other fairs. They secured
the services of Mr. Gregg of
C,K,N.X., and as a result all
announcements were handled
in a very professional manner.
In spite of heavy rain, Mr.
Gregg succeeded in injecting a
note of gayety into every event.
School Children at Orono lent a festive air to the occasion when they presented k varies
colourful program in front of the grandstand. The youngsters put on a show that lasted for,
some forty-five minutes. The' juniors made a great hit with a group of songs including
selections from Gilbert and Sullivan.

1Vinter weather is just around the corner ---
have you planned for it by putting in your supply
of coal or coke. The coal situation does not look
good --- Canadians have not been buying coal the
past summer as they usually do -- therefore with
the first cold weather there will be a rush to buy
coal --- which will create a shortage. Also, Sept.
16th, John L. Lewis suspended the miners pension
plan of 20e a ton--- Industrial spokesmen fear a full
scale strike --- so order your coal to -day, while we
still have a fair supply. -
