The Exodus from Ireland.
• . Although labor is scarce and wages hig1.
in almost every pert of Ireland, the .excatis
to America is rapidly on the increase. Froth
Cork alone an average ofi 1,500 embark
weekly, and from the other Irish poets the
migration to the New 'Worle via Liverpool is
proportionately rapid. The master wish of
every Irishman belonging to the lower Mel-
dle and lowest class seems to be to leave his
-country for ever- an object which the Irish
paterfamilias seek s to attain by sending for-
ward acroas the Atlantic- hs hardiest and
molt promising sons and daughters, provided-
• with all the money he can • raise, to earn
more for the transport -Of the rest of the
family. In this way not only an immense
amountof labor, but also an immenseamount
of specie, is daily lost to Ireland and adquired
by America. The yeFing and the industrious,
the flower of the populatipnedepart—the old.
and the feeble, anclehe sickly remain behind.
awaiting impatiently the _transmission of
_means, to follow. It is dePlorable that this
should be so, bat so it ia. The emigrants
are mostly of the Roman Catholic 'faith.
Head p entre Stephens ia thus gradually
lofing his " grand army."

Lime, Peru, situated fear miles- back from
the coast It ie a well built place, and con-
nected, with Lima by numerous carriage
roads: The building at -present used for- a
-Custom-House- was formerly a heavy fortified
castle. Its roadstaad,:sheltered by the Is -

vian coast. In 1846 the old town of Callao
1 Was destroyed by an earthquake, In 1820
-the Earl of Dundonald gallantly cut out the
-Esmeralda, a large Spanish ship of war, from
ander the guns of the fort in the- bay. - The
attempt was not quite as successful as the -
bombardment of Valparaiso. In this case,
Admiral Manez found -the Peruvians not only
in readiness,- but so -anxious to meet them
that trey did not wait for him to commence
operations!, but threw their shore batteries on
his fleet as soon as it- came within range.
The result was thatrthe Spaniards were com-
pelled to beata quick retreat, and Pere and
Chili who have made common cause togeth-
_et, won a decided victory over their former
haughty masters.
