SYNOPSIS
CHAPTER Vi A few moments i
&tor a young woman comes out,
he takes the old man below. When
ucu and his crew tee up and pre-
pare to board the ship, she orders
them to cast oft, Tucu refuses, say-
ing that the old man, who was the
captain, had invited him aboard.
Dick aboard the lugger, hears the
trend of the conversation.
CHAPTER VI
It was a bold challenge, deliv-
ered in a voice that never quaver-
ed. Dick smiled his admiration
She was capable of handling the
situation. He made a bet with him-
self that she would force the men
hack through sheer will power and
bravado,
But neither the girl nor Dick
had figured upon the craftiness of
old Tucu, Anticipating some such
holdup, the half breed had been
playing for time until two of his
men could work unobserved along
the side of the schooner and climb
up the rigging back of the girl.
Neither of them was aware of this
until her father, the demented
skipper of the schooner, suddenly
turned up again and announced his
presence with glee, He had seen
the two Caribs crawling up and
instead of repelling the men rush-
ed to offer assistance.
* 4 •
"Come aboard, mates!" he cried.
"Pll help ye. It's a great prize I've
picked up—so much money that I
don't know what to do with It.
Come aboard, an' I'll show ye."
The game was up. The girl turn-
ed a horrified gaze at her father,
and then swung back again just in
time to see Tucu make a leap for
the deck. As if determined to pun-
ish him for his audacity, she op-
ened fire at short range. With a
growl of pain, the half breed drop-
ped to the deck, with one arm
limp and useless.
'Damn her. Break her neck,
Burley(" he growled.
But Black Burley had no inten-
tion of facing the gun pointed at
him Iiom He dropped out of sight
behind the bulwark, crowding
those back of him into the water.
She would have driven them in-
to their boat at the point of her
gun if the two, helped on deck by
the old skipper, had not attacked
in the rear. When she saw them
running toward her, she gave a
little cry of alarm, and for the
first time seemed to lose her
nerve.
* * *
Tucu raised his voice at the two
Caribs, urging them to the flank
attack. The crash of the pistol
had evidently stunned Captain
Bedford, for he stood helpless and
amazed with mouth wide open.
Dick at this juncture decided to
cast his lot in with the girl. The
two Caribs had to pass close to
him. When the first came abreast
of his hiding place, he shot out a
leg and tripped him. The second
partly stumbled over the first.
Quick as a flash Dick landed a
blow with his fist on the point of
the man's jaw, and completed the
fall.
Both were armed with long
curved knives that for ugliness
could not be beaten Before either
could recover from the surprise,
he relieved them of their weap•
ons. 'Then giving the first one a
kick he ran in the direction of the
girl, who, with Tucu, had been
watching hint with ama2cment.
"Keep than covered!" Di' lk
called, "I'11 take are of these
two. Shoot the first head that hobs
up."
Encouraged by the assistant:,
that had so miraculously come to
her, the captain's daughter turned
more lierccly than ever upon the
leader.
"I'll give you ten seconds to
get over that rail," she said in a
menacing voice. "1f you're not
gone by that time, I'll kill you like
I would a dog."
Black Burley thrust a Ilea.;
above the bulwark. A bullet bur
led itself in the woodwork so near
that he dropped out of sight again
"One!" began the girl. "Two!"
Tucu growled and showed his
teeth; but his eyes were upon
Dick, whose interference had
aroused hint to furious hatred. "I'll
cut y'heart out, y'traitorI" he
breathed thickly.
"Threes F.ourI" counted the
girl.
At the seventh count, Tucu
picked himself up, slowly and
painfully, made his way over the
side. Dick returned to the disarin•
ed Caribs, and with their own
knives as weapons drove them in-
to the sea. When they disappear-
ed, leaving the deck cleared of all
enemies, he hurried to the girl's
assistance. She was peering over
the side of the schooner to see if
the crew were leaving in their
boat.
"Keep back!" Dick warned,
"They may shoot!"
She nodded and stepped cau-
tiously behind the bulwark for
protection. Dick glanced around
for some weapon. A loose spar,
as heavy as a man, and twenty
feet long, attracted his attention.
Picking it up, he carried it to the
side of the schooner, and with a
heave threw it outward so that it
just grazed the top of the rail.
It rolled over with a clatter,
carrying everything with it. There
was a growl and scream below
that informed him his ruse had
succeeded. In its descent the long
spar had knocked three Caribs in-
to the sea, and falling on the lug-
ger's small boat nearly smashed
the bottom out of it.
Captain Tucu evidently decid-
ed that retreat, until he could re-
organize his forces and plan a
new attack, was the better part of
wisdom. He bellowed a command
to his men to pull away from the
schooner, and a few moments la-
ter Dick and Captain Bedford's
daughter saw the boat returning to
the lugger.
* • *
"We've got rid of them for a
tittle," Dick said, glancing in the
direction of the lugger, "but
they'll return."
She nodded, following his eyes;
then turning to him again,. she
asked' "Were you with them?"
"Yes," he admitted, 'hut not of
than."
She frowned and raised her eyes
inquiringly. 'They picked me up
a few days ago," he explained. "I
was about dead—been in the wa-
ter for four days and nights.
When they rescued me," he add-
ed, smiling at the recollection of
it, "I wasn't in a mood to inquire
for credentials. I was glad to get
any help, Later I found out what
they were."
"What are they?" shs asked
quietly.
•gtuoatiaeaq 'uauuagsii c1!"J,,
crs, sea scavengers, pirates — al -
anything and everything."
"I sec," she murmured thought-
fully. "Then you think thiey want
to steal this schooner?"
"They took it for an abandoned
derelict at first," he replied truth.
fully, and, of course, as such it
was their legitimate prize. They
were surprised and disappointed
when they saw you and your fa-
ther aboard it."
"I can understand that," she re-
plied, "but when—when I ordered
them away, they didn't act as if—
if—" She stopped and frowned
again. "But you said they were
sea scavengers and pirates," she
added, nodding. "I suppose that
means they intend to take the
schooner anyway, lawfully or un.
lawfully."
"I'm afraid so. Captain Tucu, 1
imagine, isn't the kind to be eas-
ily discouraged. If he's decided
the schooner's worth it he'll return
later. Besides," soberly, "he has
another reason for making a sec-
ond attempt."
"What is that?" she asked.
He laughed and shrugged his
shoulders. "For one thing he'll
want to get even with me for in-
terference, and second to get hold
of those jewels I told hint about."

"SQUATTER" LEADER ARRESTED
Bobbies arrest John Morton, right, Communist "squatter" leader,
after a dozen families moved into the Ivanhoe Hotel in Central
London. Planks were • ripped from the doors of the hotel, which
had been used by Irish laborers repairing bomb damage, before the
police could interfere. Those who got in were allowed to remain,
but Bobbies boarded up the doors again. The government threat-
ened to prosecute "squatter" leaders for "criminal conspiracy."

Jesus and the Law of Love
Psalm 119:33-38; Matt. 5:43-48
Golden Text — "Love workctb
no ill to his neighbor: therefore,
love is the fulfilling of the law."—
Romans 13:10.
Prayer for Knowledge
The humble seeker. moved by
faith in God, trusts that He will
teach him, studies God's Word
prayerfully, and willingly learns.
What God teaches us we are to
put into action.
The Psalmist prays for under-
standing, Not only will he con-
cern himself with the letter of the
law, but with Its spirit. He will
enter into cooperation with the
Lord with all his heart, knowing
his heart's tendency to perverse-
ness. He is willing to accept the
discipline of the Lord.
The vanities of the world will
pervert those who are not estab-
lished in God's Word. It is the ac-
ceptance of the authority of God's
Word that begets in us a whole -
sonic fear. It is a reverential awe
in our attitude toward God by
means of which we fear to dis-
please, grieve or offend 1 -Hint.
The Law of the Kingdom
Love should go out to all, friend
and enemy alike. By lovng our
enemies we shall ourselves be sons
of God, for the son is like the
father, and this is the way the
Heavenly Father acts — He re-
turns blessing for cursing, kind-
ness for hate. To love them who
love us is no indication of grace;
even the publicans do the same.
The Perfection of God
The perfection of God is held up
as our standard, The immediate
reference is to perfection in love;
loving enemies as well as friends,
bad as well as good. But it is
clearly implied that in all things
God's character is our standard.
Nothing short of absolute likeness
to Slim should satisfy us.
The final exhortation is that we
shall be like God. If God can be-
stow on the worst of Hien His
providence and grace, who arc we
to withhold charity to others. It is
the longsuflering of God which at
last wins many to repentance. If
we only stop to think of the tender
mercies of our God we shall he int-
inediately moved to scorn our own
pettiness and censorious attitudes
toward others, Only thus can we
be perfect as our Father in Heav-
en is pet fret.

In an American shipyard noted
for its bustle and speed the stage
was set for the launching cere-

The distinguished guest, holding

THE SPORTING THING
"That one's got me worried!"
Don't I3oast
A Scots girl obtained a situation
in the South. One day her mistress
asked her what particular part of
Scotland she rune from.
"1 come from near Aberdeen,"
was the reply.
"Oh," said her mistress. "I'm
sorry you didn't tell me so before.
I had some friends staying there,
and 1 would have asked you if you
knew them."
"It's like this,' retorted the girl:
"when I was leaving home my
mother said, '1)imla boast.'"
More Important
In answer to her advertisement
for a cook, the housewife received
only one reply.
"I suppose I needn't bother ask-
ing for references, John?" she
asked, discussing the matter with
her husband.
"No, my dear," said John, "just
ask her to subunit samples."
THE SPORTING THING

He Knew
Smith assured his wife that he
could repair the broken window.
So he took careful measurements
and went to buy the glass—and to
ask the dealer how to put it in.
"It's quite easy," was the reply.
"Just remove the broken bits, fit
in the new glass, put the putty
around, and there you are!"
In a short time Smith was back
again. The shopman gretted him
with:
"Sane size again, I suppose?"
Tough
"Two days without food or
water," announced the Commando
to an admiring audience in the
local; "think of that."
"Pretty bad," agreed a middle-
aged man; "but how would you
like to have fought in the trenches
In Flanders? Sometimes we were
up to the waist in icy water and
mud for a week or more."
"Call yourselves soldiers?" snort-
ed a very, very old man who had
hobbled to the bar. "Pall! When
I was in the Zulu war, a spear
knocked one down and pinned me
to the ground. I couldn't move, and
I lay there for over a week without
food or drink."
"By Jove!" exclaimed the Com-
mando hero. "it must have been
very painful,"
"Not very," answered the old
Stan; "only when I laughed."

Remember how pleasant it used to be to travel on
Canadian Pacific ships l Remember the cuisine,
the courteous service, the fun of shipboard life... and
the ships themselves!
Just now there's a big job to do repairing the wear and tear
of wartime years—replacing lost ships.. . but, when it's done,
travel will be fun again — the Canadian Pacific way\
Soon a new, two ocean fleet will plow the sea rout:;
of the world ... and once again it will be possible
to go from Shanghai to Southampton
—Canadian Pacific all the way!

CflRONICLES of
GINGER FARM
By Gwendoline P. Clarke
The countryside is donning its
autumn colours of red and gold:
Om blue jays are calling from the
big oak tree; apples are blushing
$ rosy red; the ground is strewn
lightly with tired leaves — and
yet the thermometer the last two
days has registered eighty in the
shade. It is a great combination 1s
one has time to get out to enj-y
the warns air and the lovely seen•
try. And that is exactly watt
neice Joy and I did last Friday
We went to Guelph for no th^r
reason than to visit friends and
see the country. We did make a
round of the stores but we soon
got tired of looking at the high-
priced goods on display and took
ourso'ves up to the Agricultural
College where we enjoyed our-
selves for a good hour looking at
the beautiful gladioli, and wander-
ing through the greenhouses —
in one of which were housed tro-
pical slants of all dcscriptian.
The. nc visited and had tea
with frit nits, tvho also presented
us with two large baskets of Lom-
bard plums—on which we feasted
all the_ v.; y home.
And now to more practical
things. I ask you -- when is a
c)nvenitnce not a convenience?
the ;utiwtr to that one is — the
telephone—that is it it rings when
one rloc,n't Want it 10.
lou knrav Whitt 1 mean — one
is nicclr in the middle of canning;
the sealers are sterilized and per-
haps the second or third jar in
process of being filled when ding-
-ling -;ruing goes the phone. And
then w hat happens? You either
have to let it go unanswered and
wonder for the rest of the day
whether that call evils important or
not, or you put your kettle of
fruit to one side, turn oil the heat
under the scalers and say "11uilo"
very sweetly to that contraption
at the wall. It may he just a
neighbour Wanting a friendly chat
— its Which case you explain the
situation and ring later, or it may
be someone in urgent need of eggs
or again, it may be "long distance"
with someone at the other end tell-
ing you that he or she will be out
on the evening train.
Well we all have just such in-
terruptions which we learn to ac-
cept with good grace. but what
really burns me up is when I in-
terrupt Illy work to answer the
phone and then find it wasn't my
ring after all! Not only is such a
hindrance unnecessary but one has
the added embarrassment of hav-
ing butted in on someone else's
ring.
Of couse you know by the fore-
going remarks just what I have
been doing. Canning?—yes, that's
right. Canning those Lombard
plums all day AND answering the
telephone about forty-leven times
—twice when it wasn't my ring at
811. But that is one of the joys of
a party line. Another is trying to
get the line when one is in a
hurry, or trying to rouse the op-
erator when the line hasn't been
disconnected, Another of my pet
peeves is when people don't ring
off. Of course every subscriber to
the telephone has equal rights in
using the phone. but how I wish
the habit of ringing off when
through were more commonly ob-
served. It is one of those little
courtesies that sometimes means
such a lot, but which alas. is "store
honoured in the breach than in
the observance."
This has been our first day alone
for weeks and weeks. We expect-
ed to be really lonesome but as a
matter of fact we haven't had time.
Just the same the house has been
strangely quiet—why wouldn't it
be when over the week -end we
were a family of eight, including
one little boy, just at the age to
toddle around and get into mis-
chief—which didn't worry me at
all. During that time the men —
and Tippy — staged a hunting
party. Or should I say a shooting
party? Anyway they had guns and
I ant not sure whether they them-
selves knew whether they were
hunting or not, until Tippy start-
ed digging frantically at a hole in
the ground, then they had hopes
of a groundhog. Tippy. according
to the men, just about went wild
with excitement. But presently
she gave a mighty yelp and im-
mediately after started ploughing
the ground with her nose. Yes,
Tippy got the animal all right —
but the animal also got her —
and the animal wasn't a ground.
hog. Gunshots finished the job
and poor Tippy was tied up for
the rest of the day. Iter mournful
expression was truly pathetic.

Interior Moisture
Paint Failure Cause
Moisture, which works out from
inside a painted surface and upsets
the anchorage of the paint film, is
one of the most common causes of
paint failures. It's a trouble that
stents directly from the damp con-
dition of the object to be painted
and prevents the paint "keying" to
the surface. It cannot be blamed
on the paint itself—for no paint can
be expected to withstand interior
moisture no matter how well it
stands up against the exterior
variety.
The presence of blisters in the
paint is the common sign of a
moisture -faulted surface under-
neath. The sun's rays, or interior
warmth, cause the moisture to go
through the wall or siding. The
moisture in turn forms and collects
between the wood and the paint
surface, pushing the paint outward
in blisters.

Fit as a Fiddle
Run Up and Down Stairs
"I feel in duty bound," writes Mrs.
A.J-W., "to express my gratitude for the
better-than-expected results my father
has obtained from Kruschen Salta, Ilo
is ninety-two years old, and is as fit as a
fiddle. IIe can nip about, and run up and
down stairs. His friends marvel why it is
he is always alert and never feels slack.
He always tells them, 'I believe it is my
regular dose of Kruschen Salts in my
first cup of tea every morning.' Wo
always recommend Kruschen Salts to all
our friends. To my idea, no family
should be without Kruschen."
—(Mrs. A.J.W.)
Most people grow old long before their
time, and many of there neglect that
vital need of health—the need for
internal cleanliness.
The majority of these people could
feel so much better and brighter ... yes,
feel more spry, too'... if they would
follow the Kruschen plan for a while.
Simply take a small morning dose of
Kruschen Salts in tea, coffee or hot
water. That's all there is to it. Lessen
the dose or discontinue altogether when
you are regular. After that take when
you need it. Two sizes: 25c and 75c at
all druggists. Ask for Kruschen.
TeachersPay
A minimum salary of $1,200 for
teach' rs of elementary grades \tee
asked by the Federation of Wom-
en Teachers' Association of On-
tario at their recent convention in
Toronto.
It was pointed out that maay
teachers are on the $1,100 mini-
mum, and want the increase aatll
such time as the $1,500 ntinimutn,
approved by the Canadian Teach-
ers' Federation, Is made available.
IF THEY CAN'T BE EATEN, THEY CAN BE DRUNK
With boxcars critically scarce, thousands of bushels of potatoes, part of Long Island's bumper crop, are
shown lying in an open field at Riverhead, N.Y., with exposure rendering them unfit for eating. But there's
another side to the picture—they'll still be good for staking beverage alcohol.
Begging For Rides
We wonder how many hitch-
hikers would stand on a street
corner, begging passers -),y for the
price of a areal or a drink, says
the Kingston Whig -Standard, We
also wonder how many of them
realize that they are begging just
as much as the bums and pan-
handlers who thus cadge their liv-
ing off others. They aren't beg-
ging food or drink, but they are
begging transportation. And any-
one who begs is a beggar, be it
money, marbles or chalk.

MODERATION
a /0416iteilaMe
Because we are n moderate people, Canada has
come through the war with perhaps the least dislocation of any
nation actively involved. That is a remarkable tribute
both to the overall policies of our Government and to the
fundamental wisdom of the Canadian people.
And it holds out a glorious promise for the future.
But to make that promise come true hithe clays ahead we shall
have to continue to live up to our principles of moderation.
We shall have to continue to think, act and live --moderately.
To give in to the natural desire for immediate enjoyment
of everything and anything presently in short supply
can result only its inflation and disaster.
This is not our way.
The House of Seagram suggests that each day's enjoyment be
moderate so that the rich promise of Canada's tomorrow
can be fulfilled ... to the full,

1G DEVELOPMENTS ON SUPERIOR'S SHORE
There 2 a new kind of north
developing along Lake Superior's
rugged shore. The old north is
still there. with its hunting, its
fishing and its breath -taking scenic
beauty. But today and every day
for the past couple of years, some-
thing is being and has been added.
11f ill,ons of dollars plus man's di -
redid energy is quickly changing
that lonesome land.
Back in the early 80's, when the
Canadian Pacific Railway was
pushing its line through to British
Columbia in a successful gamble
aga'nst nature \vial the keeping of.
British Columbia in the Confeder-
at,oll of Canada as the prize, the
little ports of the North Shore
were hives of activity. Where Ma-
rathon's paper still now squats its
huge bulk was the port of Penin-
sula, with its tlto:tsands of rough,
tough, railway laborers, To the
west there was )ackftsh, then
Coldwell, with its beautiful green -
sided cove looking like a little
bit of Cornwall. To (hese tiny
ports the Steamers Algoma, Al-
berta and Athabaska, the latter
two still afloat, carried (len and
materials as the hardrock men cut
their way along the shore, They
built the railway, but they (lade
little impression on the brooding
miles and utiles of spruce and pulp
wood which grew practically to
Superior's shores. It was a coun-
try vast in resources; good to look
upon as a visitor, the operating
railwayman's nightmare, and a
singularly unproductive area.
Jobs for 'Thousands
Soon its forest resources, long
looked upon as a ' some day" pro•
position, will be scientifically ex
ploitcd — exploited in such a way
that there will be jobs for Ilion
sands, and hones for (hese thou-
sands' families, Mother Nature
will be aided by supervised cutting
and reforestration to such an ex-
tent that a new crop of trees will
be ready for cutting every forty
years. This will be no "slash 'eta
all, big and shll(' operation, and
as a result, the forest resources
will never run out.
Actually, there is in process of
being spent between Canada's
"Cold Spot" White River and
Schreiber, on the C.P.R,'s main
line to the \Vest, upwards of sev-
enty-five
ev'enty-five millions of dollars. Two
huge pulp and paper developments
have octal there feu ten or more
years — the Ontario Paper Com -
pang at Heron Bay, and tin

Marathon, which was known a,

is already a thriving, bustling town
of close to 2,000 people. Three
years ago there were less than 40

The town of Marathon (above) is typical of the new developments
along Superior's north shore. On the Canadian Pacific Railway's
main line to the west, the new streamlined station (lower) was
recently opened.
Use Hydro Power
Naturally, these new heat in-
dustries need ismer, and lots of it,
Potentially, there is plenty, but
the expenditure of another five
millions of dollars at (cast is neces-

responsibilities the Ontario Hydro
Commission is even now busy on a
new slant across the Aquasabon

Schre,hcr, \Vhen the river backs
up, a new lake nine miles long and
four across will appear, and the
raging, awe-inspiring, but seidoni
